Thanks. Our effort to spotlight stories that build a better bay area often lead us to b. A. R. T. This morning were waiting to see if the agency will put new eyes and ears on its trains. B. A. R. T. Is considering having unarmed civilians ride the trains at night. Amy hollyfield has more on this. Good morning. If this passes, you will see about ten unarmed ambassadors roaming the trains looking for safety issues. They will be trained in crisis intervention. You will mostly see them between 2 00 p. M. And midnight. It will be a sixmonth long pilot program, then they would reevaluate it. The idea has been kicked around since about 2018. This has not been easy to get this going. Thats because one issue that really got stuck on was who to hire who be the ambassadors. The first proposal was for people from nonprofits, which also include people who have been and serve time in prison. That was controversial. Now the proposed plan has shifted to use civilian employees from the b. A. R. T. Police department. If this passes, you could see these ambassadors on the trains as early as nex month. Youll see them on the trains from about 2 00 p. M. To midnight mostly, thats when they have studied it and figured out thats when theyre most needed. The south bay police are looking for more people involved in a rash of car breakins. 43 cars were burglarized in two hours on tuesday night. They were all parked along rockefeller road and sherwood drive. Officers were able to track down these two suspects in oakland. Police found them with stolen property. Investigators are trying to determine if the sunnyvale spree is connected to a dozen car breakins sunday night 11 miles away in san jose. A Real Estate Developer faces new hiring rules if it wants to build at the former Concord Naval weapons station. Last night the City Council Issued new guidelines for a massive 5 billion redevelopment project. That includes hiring 40 of labor from the area and setting an hourly wage. Lennar wants to build thousands of homes and shops and offices on that site. It has said hiring restrictions might force it to pull out of the project. A School Committee is meeting this evening to consider changing its name to Michelle Obama elementary. Woodrow Wilson Elementary School will hear input from the public this evening about naming the school after the former first lady. The school is under construction people expressed interest in a new name for the school when it reopens in august. Tonights meeting starts at 6 00 at grant elementary school. Tony la russa and his Animal Rescue organization are doing that with an Innovative Program drawing national attention. Dan ashley has the details. Reporter Tony La Russa makes his living playing hard ball, when it comes to animals hes a softy. For 29 years when hes not with players, hes with pets. Arf, the Animal Rescue foundation that he cofounded with his wife 29 years ago. Between the volunteers, staff, donors, sponsors, their here because they believe what they are doing. Reporter we spoke about program pairing dogs with veterans. Saving lives at both end of the leash. The veteran pays nothing. We pay all the veterinarian costs for the life of the dog.
