We are live here in west oakland. The folks behind me, dozens of them have been here all day, many of them standing on the steps in front of this home. Theyre keeping a constant vigil in support of the families occupying the house. As we speak, the moms have until wednesday early evening to leave. And while we understand the sheriffs could move in at any time, were told thats not likely before tomorrow. We will practice nonviolent civil disobedience. With a Court Ordered eviction looming, Dominique Walker said she and another mom and their children will leave peacefully when the time comes. We have stated numerous times that we will not resist. We are not violent. This is just one house. This is a movement. This is not the end. This is a start of a new movement for housing for all. Were looking to deescalate the situation. Ray cali with the Alameda County Sheriffs Department told abc7 news his deputies have until wednesday evening to execute the order delivered last friday by an Alameda County superior court judge. Were looking for a nonconfrontational situation. Its very easy to make Law Enforcement look like the bad person in this scenario, and were not looking to do that. Were not sure when theyre coming. Reporter with dozens of supporters now keeping a constant presence outside the house, walker and others have been living inside illegally since november. She says her group is even offering to buy the home from Wedgewood Properties for the same price the company paid last july, 501,000. We dont believe in negotiating with people who are essentially trying to hold our property hostage. Reporter wedgwood spokesman sam singer says the Company Plans to renovate the home using atrisk youth and sell to it a first time home buyer. Wedgwood has reached out to these women and made them an offer to provide shelter for up to two months as well as to move their belongings for free. We hope they accept that and move voluntarily and peacefully. Now the moms called that offer from wedgwood, quote, insulting. They say it fails to address the larger issue not only for the families currently living here, but also for the thousands of people who are homeless in oakland. Live in oakland, laura anthony, abc7 news. Laura, there are still small children living in that home from what we understand. Is there concern about them being there when the sheriffs arrive . Yes, there, dan. Not only on the part of the sheriffs. They told us theyre concerned about how to approach this eviction because of the children. But also, the moms told us this afternoon that they actually have a plan for those kids and that they will not be on the premises when the sheriffs arrive. Okay, thanks, laura, so much. Governor newsom is on a weeklong tour of california to promote his billion effort to address the states homelessness crisis. The governor made his first stop at nevada countys outreach and medical engagement project in grass valley. He called homelessness the number one issue in the state, saying its impacting every corner of california, cities, towns, and rural areas alike. This is no longer a coastal issue. It has dominantly been coastal construct i think in peoples minds. But the reality is this issue is major issue in parts large and small. On friday, newsom declared himself californias homeless czar when he rolled out his budget plan, which calls for a 750 million fund that can be used to pay rents, fund affordable housing, or help boarding and care homes. Well, here at abc7, we are searching for ways to help build a better bay area. That means look for people in the Community Coming up with new and good ideas. Now a group has an idea that could fix more than one issue. The plan, that is six months in the making, could help reduce crime like violent robberies that weve covered here on the news recently. And it could bring in business as well. The solution involves the portsmouth square plaza garage and 3 dollars total parking. Thats a sea change. Dion lim is live in chinatown with more on this idea. Dion . Dan, there are just about 900 Small Businesses here in chinatown, and from the looks of it, it appears to be pretty bustling. But come nighttime, it is a very different story. Merchants tell me because of crime, because of breakins, nobody is on the streets, and its a virtual ghost town. So their solution starts with the parking garage. Like a small army, this group of Business Owners and chinatown leaders are on a mission to take back their neighborhood. We just want to be proactive. Last summer, two men were viciously attacked in broad daylight. That was followed by brazen car breakins caught on camera, and then the brutal assault of three men in portsmouth square that fall. The incidents triggered a community rally for change, but merchants i spoke with say theyve seen no improvement since, despite the sfpd increasing patrols. So theyre taking matters into their own hands. Police need to police people. And if there is no people here to police, of course theyre going to go somewhere else when there going to be more action. For the past six months, steven lee, a chinatown Business Owner and entertainment commissioner for San Francisco has been working with the sfmta, San Francisco reks and park and the portsmouth square garage to lower the evening time parking rates to get business and to get the city to step up safety efforts. This will hopefully boost our nighttime economy. Yes, it will help us a lot i believe. Before to park in this garage from 5 00 p. M. To 2 00 a. M. , it would cost drivers 36. Now its just 8. To sweeten the deal even more, spend 40 or more at participating merchant, and that rate goes down to just 3 bucks. While the reduced parking rate seems like a step in the right direction, there are skeptics the program will actually work. I dont think that is the key. The key is you need to have something live here. Activities, something art, creative. While it will take time to see if there are results, merchants say change is better than doing nothing at all. Back out here live, this parking Validation Program is supported by so many people in the community, including the chi chinatown Newcomers Group and merchants association. Their goal is to get more than one thousand people on board. Dion, you mentioned that some store merchants understandably were hesitant to go on camera about what theyve witnessed happening in their neighborhood. Tell us more about that. Yeah, dan, i spoke to numerous owners of legendary businesses who say they have witnessed or heard of breakins happening almost every day, but they are hesitant to report them. They feel like their complaints fall on deaf ears. The sfpd has long said that they encourage these Business Owners to speak up, because that is the only way they can keep track of these incidents. Dion, thank you so much. Now we want to hear your ideas about building a better bay area. Share them by joining our better Bay Area Group on facebook. Bart riders may notice a change in the cars and on the platforms as they head home this evening. Starting tonight, the newly created team of 12 Sworn Police Officers will be dedicated to riding trains in pairs and walking platforms on nights and weekends. But one rider we spoke with today doesnt think the teams will make a difference in improving safety on the system. 12 people is not a lot. You think about how many people ride bart, how many trains go on throughout the day. So no, i really dont think thats enough people. What do you think they need to do . Take care of the homeless people. Thats a big issue. People doing drugs, the smell, a lot of stuff that goes on the bart. The team will supplement the Safety Ambassador Program approved by bart board last week. The sixmonth Pilot Program begins next month. Barts new police chief is also hoping to add 25 more officers to his department. Four women have been arrested for a grab and run robbery at palo altos macys over the weekend.
