This past week abc 7 launched a new series of reports, chasing california, which explores issues and strategy leading up to the super tuesday primary in march. My colleague and i traveled to fresno to look at Bernie Sanders strategy to win california by winning the latino vote. Here is a portion of that story followed by a discussion on why this matters. [ cheers and applause ] excited to have a spotlight on fresno. Its not the sexy San Francisco or sexy l. A. Why do you think the Central Valley has been overlooked by politicians. Because of our communities of color. That candidate who wins california has an excellent chance to win the nomination. Here in fresno was Bernie Sanders has his very first rally here in the Central Valley. Its kind of a big deal hes campaigning here. A lot of times politicians ignore this part of california. So i think it shows that its part of his strategy that hes trying to, you know, campaign in different parts of the state. In 1,000 feature december nays will be on the right. Right now were on the way to a coffee shop to meet with a Community Organizer in fresno thats super involved with get out the vote efforts, especially among young people and latinos. What does the youth latino vote look like now. Across seven complaints that make up Central Valley weve seen the largest turnout of voters in the midterms last year there are a lot of young people, young latino voters, young latin exvoters. Also we exist at the crosssection of many identities. Weve had i think over 3,000 preregistered young people who are just like ready to vote. And thats just part of the story. You can see the rest of the story at abc7news. Com. Im here with abc contributor and political insider. Phil, whats really interesting about this story weve been covering of the latino vote and Bernie Sanders strategy was Bernie Sanders was not in the lead about when we first started reporting on this. No. Now this week he is the frontrunner in california. Im curious how much you think this strategy to go after the latino vote might be part of that. It is. Its a key part of it. In california its all about getting different groups and building up, up, and up. California is a heavy media state. It takes a lot of mope if you want to buy tv time. The other way is to get directly to the people. Thats what Bernie Sanders has been doing. Look, hes been doing it now for five years. He ran last time and he never stopped running, so he has continuously been running. This isnt his first time in the Central Valley. Hes been there, come back there. Its not his first time with latino voters and young voters. Hes been there as well. Unlike the other candidates that dropped into this race or got started a year ago or two, Bernie Sanders has been moving, hes got the operation and hes on the ground in the Central Valley. Its interesting. You can say, hey, all these votershim. Thats why biden is up there as well. Hes up there in the polls but he has not campaigned in the Central Valley yet and thats, of course, a unique thing Bernie Sanders and a few others i think no other candidate still in the race oh, Pete Buttigieg has been to the Central Valley. But Bernie Sanders, every single one of his campaign offices, which is really interesting, in california are in communities heavily latino. Here its in the mission, l. A. , east l. A. As you see in our piece hes the only candidate that has an office in fresno. Some is cosmetic. You want to put your headquarters in a place this makes a statement. Others will make it along similar lines. Kamala harris chose oakland. Its a statement shes making. In there hes in there pushing. They are all pushing. In california the big vote is right here in the bay area. Its the democratic stronghold. The first race you win is the democratic primary, so you have to get democrats. They are in San Francisco, in monterey, in sacramento, in the east bay. They are in the los angeles but in los angeles they dont vote. They just dont vote as much. The latino vote is disproportionately small for the population. Turnout is low. Turnout is low historically. But he is appealing to them, and its going to possibly give an edge, because the rest of the democratic pot is going to be sliced up. Theres only so many slices in the bay area pie and los angeles pie. The trick is to go somewhere other people arent going. Central valley up to redding, down the spine of the state, which is usually ignored by democrats because its heavily republican. We are seeing in the past few elections turnout is getting higher among latinos and i think the Sanders Campaign knows that. Turnout. You need enthusiasm for turnout. Now, you spoke with the younger people and people working in the Central Valley. What is it in the Central Valley they are enthusiastic about you it. You might think they say an old man and not want to vote for him. We asked young people the question. They are drawn to his messaging, his poll is s. They like his health care policies. They like his, you know, Affordable College policies. Those are the issues. Obviously we could dig into this for a very lopping time. This is what the piece explores. We hope you watch it on abc7news. Com. Were doing pieces digging into the political race. We have one you and i worked on together, bloomberg and his strategy. Former mayor of new york, the billionaire . Weve got everything in this race and they are all chasing to catch california. Weve got women, billionaires, bernie and biden. The other candidates are still out there waiting to see what happens. They might be coming back into the race. Dont count it out. California really matters this time. We have this series, you kaka watch it in its entirety on abc7news. Com. San Francisco Chronicle on wednesday and sundays. This episode we showed you is available right now online. Thanks for watching. Thanks, phil. Good to be here. Again, california really does matter, this primary. As you see in the piece, young latino voters, first in their families able to vote are extraordinary energized and ready to go to the polls. We do look forward to sharing more of these types of stories in the coming weeks. A reminder you watch each episode of chasing california in its entirety on abc7news. Com, the abc 7 news app, Youtube Channel and amazon fire. Great ski conditions this Holiday Weekend people heading to tahoe. For many safety is top of mind following fridays deadly avalanche. Looking at current numbers, 30s in inland valleys, a little fog by the delta. 38 in santa rosa, 54 half moon bay. With the cloud cover more insulated than we have been upper 40s in oakland. 43 in fremont.
