KGO This Week With George Stephanopoulos July 13, 2024

Joe biden, you saw what happened in iowa, you saw what happened in New Hampshire. Do you think its time the party moves on . Plus, were oneonone with Amy Klobuchar after taking third in New Hampshire and tom steyer pouring money into those next critical contests. And its time to stop the tweeting about the department of justice criminal cases. An extraordinary rebuke from the attorney general. In an exclusive interview with abc news. But questions about the president and political interference in the Justice Department persists. The latest fallout this morning. Pierre thomas joins our powerhouse roundtable. Announcer from abc news, its this week. Here now, coanchor martha raddatz. Good morning and welcome to this week. On this president s day weekend. With the first two major contests in the 2020 race behind us, all eyes are now on nevada and South Carolina. With no clear democratic frontrunner, the next two contests could prove decisive in the sprint to super tuesday. The day when the largest share of states and territories weigh in. This week, we hit the ground in South Carolina, that primary just two weeks away, and the former longtime frontrunner joe biden staking his campaign on the prospect of minority voters delivering him a victory that could change the narrative after iowa and New Hampshire. Its the first in the south primary, where black voters for the first time in this election cycle will be the overwhelming majority, expected to cast up twothirds of all ballots in the february 29th primary. For joe biden, it could be do or die, after serving as Barack Obamas Vice President , bidens strong connection to minority voters has made this state key to his nomination strategy. He still leads in the polls and has the lions share of endorsements here, but after lackluster finishes in iowa and New Hampshire, his supporters are doing everything they can to make sure he has a strong finish. We ask you god to please put your arms around Vice President biden and all of the other candidates, all of them. Reporter what this group of one hundred black females is about is activism, the selfproclaimed reckoning crew, whose oldest member is 94, is giving heart and soul to the Biden Campaign. If you want to read through it first be confident when youre talking to them. Reporter as their name suggests theyre not to be trifled with. Im calling to see if youre planning to support joe bide in 2020 South Carolina primary . Well, thank you very much. All righty, thank you. Byebye. So that sounded like a successful one for you. Yes, it was. He or she at least said okay. Reporter right now, theres a solid wall of support for the former Vice President but if thats not in the cards what about somebody like Amy Klobuchar, Pete Buttigieg, Michael Bloomberg . All would be better than what we have but Vice President joe biden, i think he has the guts and also the experience. Reporter in the chamber of the statehouse, state rep Todd Rutherford who has been in office since 1998 worries bidens experience isnt enough to beat donald trump so hes leaning towards Michael Bloomberg. This year is different. This is not about democrats falling in love, this about democrats making sure that donald trump is no longer president. He keeps saying i can win South Carolina, i am electable, yo just dont buy that . It sounds like an excuse. He appears to be a step behind. Hes not saying the things we need to hear. Do you really think that democrats can beat him . Oh, yeah. We can. Will we . Im not sure. Reporter if anyone can be considered a kingmaker in South Carolina, its congressman and majority w. H. I. P. James clyburn. Hes represented the state for more than two decades. Each president ial election cycle clyburn has a cantmiss fish fry for National Candidates to introduce themselves to south carolinians. He has yet to endorse any of the candidates this year. Tell me whats more important, issues that affect africanamericans or i dont care who it is as long as they beat donald trump . Theres a combination of both. Sure we want to defeat donald trump. Losing, redistricting, which will be taking place two years from now, what have we gotten . I think that for us to maintain our down ballot that has to come into the equation, sure donald trump is donald trump said its been great for africanamericans and employment, he certainly has some africanamerican backing. That is 1 of the 31 lies he told during that state of the union address. The fact of the matter is, i talked to africanamericans, i go to church with them and i know theyre not doing better. If youre working three jobs, i told someone earlier today, and i mean this, if you go with the unemployment numbers to determine peoples status, then you have to say that slavery was in very good shape because they were fully employed. Reporter even though clyburn isnt publicly picking favorites, his grandson appears in an ad for Pete Buttigieg. Hes the change we need. Reporter but the Biggest Surprise in South Carolina has been the support that billionaire businessman tom steyer is attracting. After spending more than 14 million in advertising here, and lots of face time, steyer is polling second among black voters. The chair of the South Carolina democratic black caucus is convinced steyer can win. We have watched tom steyers numbers here in South Carolina really seemed to have a surge, how have you done it . I hate to say it was predictable but it was. I guess the shortest answer is that tom steyer listens and that probably trumps everything. Reporter theres only one issue that matters for him. Heres the one that stop steyer has that the other candidates dont have, he doesnt have a record of being taken offensive actions and supporting offensive policies against the Africanamerican Community and that includes biden and that crime act of 1974. That includes bloomberg with his stop and frisk. That includes Amy Klobuchar as a prosecutor. It includes a whole host of them. The South Carolina primary just two weeks away and up next, the nevada caucus, another critical contest in the aftermath of New Hampshire and iowa. Joining me now from las vegas is minnesota senator Amy Klobuchar, good morning, senator. Good morning, martha. Its great to be on. After your strong third place finish in New Hampshire, youre heading into the nevada caucus with an endorsement shared with joe biden. The most recent fox news poll had you at less than 2 of the vote in both nevada and South Carolina. Your New Hampshire finish may help you. Youre just now doing ad buys, how do you pull this off . Actually the Las Vegas Review journal that came out after New Hampshire yesterday had me at ten points, thats even a day before our ads even started. So were pretty excited about that. I think that came out all of the work we did in New Hampshire. We had huge crowds, including 1,000 people in reno. The endorsement is also very helpful. We see ourselves on an uphill path. I never thought id be able to compete with some of my opponents bank accounts. What i dont have in that, i have made up in hard work. We have teams now in every super tuesday state and we, since the New Hampshire debate raised 12 million online, most of it just from regular people that have been giving money online and new people who have discovered me for the first time and get what im focused on, which is bringing people with me instead of shutting them out, which is bringing back decency to the white house, and most importantly, having a president that can actually put herself in the shoes of other people in this country given my background compared to donald trumps. So its a very exciting time for our campaign that people counted us out when i announced in the blizzard they didnt even think we were going to finish that speech much less get through the summer. Weari wearily were clearly surging. Senator, in modern history, no Major Party Nominee placed below second in iowa and New Hampshire, so what are you doing that those failed candidates didnt do . I think this is such different primary season. There are so many candidates of merit. Something like 25 people. Still so many candidates that made it hard for a lot of people to be able to have the numbers. And so what ive done is slowly but surely in a steady fashion, which i think is what you want in a president , and in a frugal fashion have gotten to where we are. Im approaching this in a different way and we really shocked the pundits in New Hampshire and it was all hard work, the endorsements of the papers, the endorsement of the New York Times that i share with my friend elizabeth and the kind of momentum that you see. Its a different year. Senator, i want to talk about the minority vote, you cant win the nomination without the support of minority voters. The latest National Poll from quinnipiac university, shows you at 0 among black voters against the rest of the primary field and another National Poll from Monmouth University shows you at 1 among black, hispanic and asian voters. Whats your plan to build spot youll need in the upcoming contest, areas that are far more diverse than New Hampshire . Well, thats going to be on me. I need people to get to know me. Ive always gotten high support in all of my elections with hispanic and africanamerican communities in my state. Thats a start. I have a number of endorsements from mayors in minnesota who have been campaigning for me across the country. Congresswoman sanchez from california has endorsed me. But youve been campaigning for a year, arent you running out of time with these minority voters . No, because my name identification in states outside of the early few states wasnt that high. Simply because i didnt have the money of Mike Bloomberg to run more ads during your show. Than im on being interviewed your show. I get that. Thats what happens. And so its on me as we have all this money now were finally finally able to run ads in nevada, run ads in South Carolina and beyond. Thats a big difference. People dont know me and then im going to emphasize my record of equal opportunity, the work that ive done in leading so many Voting Rights bills including automatically registering kids to vote when they turn 18, getting rid of gerrymandering. I have a strong record when it comes to Voting Rights and equal opportunity i want to talk about something on your record. The chairman of the South Carolina black caucus, talked to me about your record as a prosecutor in minnesota. New revelations that a black teen sentenced to life in prison could be innocent. On tuesday you told abcs the view that new information should immediately reviewed, but wasnt it your responsibility at the time as the countys top prosecutor to make sure authorities had all the information before a teenager was jailed for this . Well, i wasnt aware of that information, the new information, until this latest investigation, and it must be reviewed immediately. Not just the new evidence but old evidence as well. But the old evidence, again, you were the countys top prosecutor and sentenced the teen to life in prison okay, if i could the defendants in this case, there were three defendants charged with killing an 11yearold africanamerican girl who was doing her homework at her kitchen table. All three were convicted during the time that i was the lead attorney. We supervised about 10,000 to 15,000 cases a year. But this particular case, that verdict was thrown out because of police investigation, miranda issues, the next county attorney, i was no longer in the office, i was an u. S. Senator, then tried that case again. Surveillance tape was presented, no dna, no fingerprints martha, as prosecutors, our job is to convict the guilty and protect the innocent. When anything new comes in, puts into doubt any conviction, must be review. I undertook a major review of all of our serious cases involving dna. This one didnt. I also pioneered of doing eyewitness identification with the innocence project. I went around the country and debated other d. A. S about having interrogations being videotaped because i believe so strongly they should be videotaped. When you look at my record the 12 decrease of africanamerican incarceration rates when i was there. My response to this case is this it must be reviewed immediately and brought to court. Okay, thank you very much for joining us this morning, senator klobuchar. Thank you. Up next, as the first 2020 primary contests split the democratic delegate, the odds of a contested convention have gone way up. Will the democrats be forced to broker for a nominee in milwaukee . The convention would have to explain to the american people, hey, candidate x kind of got the most votes and won the most delegates in the primary process but were not going to give him or her the nomination, i think that would be a very divisive moment for the democratic party. Theres already been quite a bit of buzz about the very real scenario of a contested convention when the democrats arrive in milwaukee this july. Some say its a reality due in large part to a unique primary calendar and an usually wide field of candidates after iowa and New Hampshire. So we had to ask nate silver, do you buy that . Yeah, so its been a long time since we had a contested convention. Some factors this year that make it a real responsibility. One of it is a calendar. Super tuesday is just three days after South Carolina. By the time super tuesday states have voted, placing like texas and california, 38 of all delegates will already have been chosen. Unless one breaks into a commanding position before super tuesday, all those delegates could be split several different ways making it hard for anyone to get a majority. The second is Michael Bloomberg, his strategy of skipping the first four states is confusing the process, its making it hard for moderates to settle on one candidate. Whether its bloomberg himself or Pete Buttigieg or Amy Klobuchar and lets not forget about joe biden. Michael bloomberg is competitive in super tuesday states. The biggest thing that could have a biggest contested is Bernie Sanders. While bernie in leading in National Polls his numbers are in the mid20s. Which leaves plenty of votes to go around among other candidates. Even New Hampshire, which should be one of his strongest states, he got 26 of the vote. Not quite clear yet how high his ceiling is yet. The model says theres 36 chance that nobody wins a delegate majority, thats not exactly the same thing as a contested convention. Im concerned that when you have two guys running who are in fact are going to spend combined over a 1 billion going into super tuesday, thats never happened before. People understand theres something wrong when we have a corrupt political system that allows billionaires to buy elections. We cant just have a government thats run by and for billionaires and people who stack up to billionaires. Its one of the most divisive issues in the 2020 democratic primary and it doesnt seem to be going away any time soon. Intense criticism of wealthy president ial contenders who some believe are trying to buy the nomination. Among those receiving criticism, billionaire businessman tom steyer, whos been gaining ground in the crucial South Carolina primary, and he joins us now. Thanks for joining us, mr. Steyer. Martha, its great to be with you. You have poured millions of dollars into ads in nevada and more than 14 million in tv and radio in asking and South Carolina and boasting the largest statewide operation of any other campaign there, youre saying youre ready to shock the world, do you think youre going win in those states . Im trying my heart at it. I think im going to do really well, martha. I have spent more time in nevada than any other candidate and i have spent more time in South Carolina than any other candidate. Even though i was the last candidate other than Michael Bloomberg to get in. I have been spending the time and we have people on the ground in both states from those states actually going out, talking to people, organizing, listening and coming up with a message that matters. Thats really why im doing well in nevada and South Carolina is because i have put in the time, listened to the people. Im talking to their actual issues. Lets talk about the money. Youve spent much more on ads than any candidate in iowa and New Hampshire and let me read the results of that in iowa, 16. 4 million spent, 0 of the vote, 0 delegates. In huh hampshire, 19. 8 million spent, 0 of the votes, why should voters expect a different outcome there . I was the last person into this race as i said, i wanted to compete in all the early primary states but in fact, what we have seen is, on the ground in nevada and South Carolina, im doing really well and thats what the polls say. What it also says is that im putting together a coalition of people including specifically africanamericans and latinos who are responding to a message thats inclusive and im putting together the kind of coalition that well have to have in november 2020 to beat donald trump. In these next two states, both of which are dramatically more diverse than either iowa and New Hampshire, is that my message is resonating as i believe you said earlier in this program, im second with africanamericans and those numbers are moving up. In the fall, we need to beat donald trump. And one of the things we need to do is get the entire, Diverse Coalition of democrats to show up. Im a grassroots person for the last ten years. I built one of the biggest grassroots organizations in the United States, nextgen america, i have shown that i know how to get people to turn out. Im putting together that kind of coalition together in nevada and South Carolina. That will take to beat donald trump. You have been endorsed by a growing number of black leaders but you still trail far behind biden in South Carolina among black voters and in the most recent National Polls, you registered 0 while Michael Bloombergs support has really skyrocketed. You said that the democratic nominee has to have strong support among voters of color. How can you win the nomination if you dont have the strong diverse you need . Lets talk about nationally. The way this has to work for me, martha, is for me to show in nevada that i can produce a great result, take it to South Carolina, show i can produce a great result, and actually have some attention so people can learn who i am, im not a famous person, but ive been on the ground in nevada and South Carolina, meeting people face to face and doing really well and if i can show there that i can put together that coalition and take that momentum into super tuesday with the kind of Diverse Coalition that i believe im building and that i believe i will show then that will give me the momentum. People will have to look at me as serious candidate. The real question is, who can beat donald trump . And the two things well need to do is take him on the economy and my background says, my 30 years in business, says i can show where hes lying, which is every time he opens his mouth on the economy and that i can put together the kind of Diverse Coalition. This will be a turnout election. The question is, will the Democratic Coalition turn out . My answer is going to by can show that i can produce that. Mr. Steyer, you say you can take on donald trump on the economy. But the latest quinnipiac National Poll released just this week say 70 of voters describe the nations economy as excellent or good, so how do you convince a change is needed when they think theyre doing so well under donald trump . I think if you take a look at what he says, everything he says superficially sounds right but its actually a lie. When he says the economy is growing, i can show in in fact all the money is going to rich people. When he says the unemployment is low, thats true, i can show the wage doesnt support families. When he says the stock market is up, its largely because of the huge tax break he gave to big corporations but it also doesnt matter that much, 85 of the stocks are held by the top 10 i want to go back to that 70 number you talk about the wealthy. Youre not all wealthy people. 70 of people say the economy is good and theyre doing well. Well, here we are on a show and youre standing up for mr. Trumps version of the economy. And im telling you im telling you about a National Poll. Im standing up for anybody. Im telling you about a National Poll. And what im saying is this, there is a different story of this economy and this country that has to be told. Mr. Trump has to be faced down about what hes saying on the economy because hes running on the economy, thats exactly what hes going to say, hell say, im great on the economy and democrats stink. I can take him on that because it has to be shown that this economy actually isnt working the vast bulk of americans and this president is dangerous to them in terms of money and in terms of health care and in terms of retirement. How do you convince them that you can do a better job than the other billionaire Michael Bloomberg . Well, i have a very i have a very specific set of proposals here, martha. One is i can im promising and easily deliver a 10 tax cut to everybody in america who makes than 250,000 bucks. Two, im going to declare a state of emergency on climate on the first day and actually rebuilding this country will produce over 4. 5 million goodpaying union jobs. Every year for as far as the eye can see. And mr. Steyer go ahead. And third of all, were talking about a Wage Structure here thats actually gone down over the last 40 years and that raising the minimum wage and getting living wages for working americans is something thats absolutely critical. And we need to stand up for unions and we need to stand up for the right of the working people to bargain collectively and come together and basically fight back on a war against the working class. That started with Ronald Reagan and continued through mr. Trump. Were running out of time here. Mr. Steyer, were running out of time here, and i want you to address the criticism about the amount of money youve spent on the campaign. Elizabeth warren called it wrong and is not the way a democracy should work. Well, martha, if you know my history, you know what ive done in every single instance, including the starting the need to impeach, going after the Climate Crisis and fighting corporations successfully for a decade, when ive seen a huge problem in the United States i put my heart and soul and money to try and solve it. I saw a huge problem here, i got into the race late because i was worried that no one was going to take on mr. Trump the way he needed to be beaten. Thats exactly what im doing here. Im putting my heart and soul and money behind the idea that we need to take back this country from the corporations that have bought it, that we need to deal directly with our Climate Crisis and we need to deliver social and Racial Justice across the board. Okay, tom steyer, thank you for joining us this morning. Up next, the fallout from attorney general bill barrs exclusive interview with abc news continues. Our Pierre Thomas got that interview and he joins our powerhouse roundtable. Well be back in 60 seconds. Ourpowerhou ourpowerhouserou ourpowerhouseroundtable. Well be back in 60 seconds. Othroughout the country for the past twelve years, mr. Michael bloomberg is here. Vo leadership in action. Mayor bloomberg and president obama worked together in the fight for gun safety laws, to improve education, and to develop innovative ways to help teens gain the skills needed to find good jobs. Obama at a time when washington is divided in old idlogical battles he shows us what can be achieved when we bring people together to seek pragmatic solutions. Bloomberg im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. Mr. Barr, the president does not like to be told what to do, he may not like what youre saying, are you prepared for those ramifications . Of course, as i said during my confirmation i came in to serve as attorney general and im not going to be bullied or influenced by anybody and i said it, whether its congress, newspaper editorial boards or the president. Attorney general bill barr in an unprecedented rebuke of President Trump from a member of his sitting cabinet. Its anybodys guess how this plays out. Few are better informed than the man who got that exclusive interview, abc news chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas, joins the powerhouse roundtable this morning. Alongside Associated Press Washington Bureau chief julie pace, npr White House Correspondent franco ordonez, and maryalice parks. Pierre, we want to start with you, your interview with the attorney general getting enormous attention this week with barr saying the president s tweeting makes it impossible to do his job. Whats your takeaway with what barr said . And why he wanted to say it. The word pressure comes to mind. The job is to talk to people who like barr and people who dont like barr. If people who respect barr and people who dont respect barr. And the one key word they all said to me is hes under pressure. He had a week where he overruled the prosecutors who wanted to give roger stone seven years to nine years in jail. Four of them left the case. One of them quit the Justice Department completely. Never seen that in all of the years covering the Justice Department and then you had the president tweeting over and over again about the case. At one point criticizing the judge. The attorney general had to do something, because to have respect in that building, the Justice Department you have to have some level of independence from the white house. Were those in the Justice Department surprised by this and do they really buy what barr said, or hes just trying to appease him . There was surprise because as you said, barr is the first sitting cabinet level official to criticize the president in an interview. Openly in the way that he did. And he told him something that he didnt want the him to do. On the other hand theres some skepticism, because barrs the president s guy, he believes in his policies. Hes much more conservative than people believe. People were surprised because the president is the wild card. No one knows what hes going to do, is he going to take barrs advice . If he does not, barr will have to live with it or in a position where he may have to quit. Franco, we have already seen the president respond to the interview which were told took the white house by surprise, as well. He tweeted, the president never asked me to do anything in a criminal case, a. G. Barr. This doesnt mean that i dont have as president the legal right to do so, i do, but i have so far chosen not to, so more about the reaction from the president. Well, i mean, the president is responding. Hes speaking out. There are a lot of questions about whether this will have an impact on the president. So many republicans came out in support of barr, kind of rounded, you know, the fences, saying, look, listen to your attorney general, hes a good person, hes the guy youd want. Wed love for the president to stop tweeting as much. But we have heard that before many, many times, and the president has not stopped tweeting. The fact that he tweeted again on friday is another indication that hes not going to stop tweeting. So i think were going to see in the next few weeks. I mean, hes going to continue to do this, barr wants to show independence, but well see what happens. And on that independence note, julie, attorney general barr struck a critical tone at times during the interview still towing the party line, the change in the sentencing recommendation wasnt influenced by the president. Lets take a look. I could not support the seven to nine years and i didnt need anybody to tell me that seven years to nine years was an excessive sentence. You think i need the president s tweet to tell me that seven to nine years is excessive . So there still doesnt seem to be much daylight between barr and the president. And this is why this isnt so black and white as a cabinet official pushing back at a president. Because President Trump in barr has the attorney general that he wants. This is an attorney general who believes that president have broad authority, that executive power is almost limitless. And President Trump knows that, because hes seen bill barr act on that recommendation. So, even though he had this public criticism which is something that the president wouldnt put up from most other people this attorney general has helped the president. And pierre, on this, Andrew Mccabe, no charges against him. Theyre taking a second look at the case of Michael Flynn, hiring an outside prosecutor. Its all complicated. In the president s world hed like to have seen Andrew Mccabe prosecuted to the fullest, that didnt happen. The same with former fbi director james comey, the department of justice didnt that as well. On the flynn case, there were some issues about how the fbi interrogated him that came up in court. So the fact that barr is willing to lean in on that is not surprising to me because barr has expressed questions about the origins of the russia investigations and he has enormous authority to review whatever he wants to at the Justice Department. He can do it. But theres one problem i was at the courthouse when Michael Flynn agreed to plead guilty and he said over and over again, when asked, did you do this . Did you lie to the fbi . Asked again, was anyone pressuring to do this . He said he was not being pressured. I dont know how you resolve that. Thats tough one to get around. I want to turn to 2020 which has dominated our weeks, our year, maryalice parks, when you look at iowa, New Hampshire, and leading into the caucus and debate on wednesday, just go through your take on this. We forgot that Bernie Sanders came out of New Hampshire and this is a very big week for him as well. Look, its all about who can be in position on super tuesday, and thats only 15 days away from today, 30 of the delegates are up for grabs on that one day alone. Senator Bernie Sanders team feels incredibly confident. Theyre looking at this National Infrastructure that they have. Theyre going into nevada, he has fivetimes of staff on the ground in nevada compared to someone like Amy Klobuchar. His team feels really good. I talked to a Senior Adviser yesterday who told me he thinks the senator is poised to pick up more delegates and more states on super tuesday than anyone else. You heard senator klobuchar. When they talk about the candidacy is very positive about it, of course, one of the things that propelled her out of the New Hampshire at number three was her debate performance. That was compelling. So what does she do in this upcoming debate and everybody elses going to be looking for that moment as well . Well, this debate is going to be unlike any other we have seen, because its likely bloomberg is on that stage, and that changes the stakes for everyone. People like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, theyre itching to go toe and toe with bloomberg. Bernie sanders has run the last four years against billionaires. Youre exactly right. Everyone saw what happened to Amy Klobuchar in New Hampshire. Liss beth warrens team in particular. They really took notes. I talked to one of the surrogates yesterday theyre totally aware this upcoming debate is a sink or swim moment for her. Voters are waiting until the last minute to decide and they need to make an impression on that stage. Sanders won on tuesday, but by a slim margin, no near the 22point lead he had in 2016, you wrote this week, his narrow victory has raised concerns about his ability to broaden his coalition. What weve seen from Bernie Sanders, he has loyal base of supporters. What we havent seen is an ability to broaden that out, to bring new people into his coalition. In some ways its not surprising. Bernie sanders doesnt change. He wants to bring people to him. Hes not moving toward where other people are. The challenge he has is that his support could be very easily overtaken if moderates are able to coalesce one candidate. Of course, i think what he has going for voters arent coalescing around one candidate. But one of sanders main arguments, franco, is that hell be able to energize, bring out nonvoters, does he have a point there . Hes saying that and he can say bring out nonvoters, he didnt bring out as many as voters out in iowa and New Hampshire as he did in 2016. He also said he can beat donald trump. Hes kind of playing this electability card that others have played. But i think well find out whether he can do that in these other states because iowa and New Hampshire are much different than nevada and South Carolina. The mix of the population is so much different, latinos are going to play a big role, 30 of the population in nevada is latino. Africanamericans in South Carolina, 60 of the democratic delegation is africanamerican. So its going to be its a new ball game now, id argue. To that point, you and i, pierre, we have been talking about this, former Vice President joe biden has banking on support from africanamerican voters in South Carolina, do you think that fire wall as he calls it, in South Carolina is as strong as the Biden Campaign says it is . I think he needs to win somewhere. The fact that he didnt do well in iowa and New Hampshire, black voters, africanamerican voters are like all voters, theyre very practical with their vote. They vote with their interests lie and they want to see someone who can beat donald trump. If you recall when Hillary Clinton was running against barack obama, i think before the primaries and caucuses, she was polling ahead of barack obama in the Africanamerican Community. He wins iowa and wins in South Carolina. And maryalice, the moderates and the progressives, when you looked at the polling numbers or the positions as they came out of New Hampshire, people were saying, bernie got this, if you add together the three moderates, do voters look at at it that way . Voters dont look at it as some binary choice. I meet people who say bernies their first pick, biden is their second pick, because they think both these men speak to the working class and feel authentic. I talked to a lot of women who say theyre picking between the two women in top tier because they just want to vote for a woman. I think well see a lot more Bernie Sanders and mayor bloomberg crossover voters. They might surprise bloomberg. But they both have an independent streak. Some voters who are tired of both parties. I dont think that the average voter is experiencing this race as a binary choice. And beyond the binary choice issues, they may look at a woman and say we want a woman, or whatever, franco, you reported this week that Jared Kushner has been working to revive trumps immigration system overhaul, is immigration a big issue for these democratic primary voters . Its a big issue. It will play a very big role in nevada for example. This is a massive issue that immigrants have been pushing for, that latinos have been pushing for, and i think in nevada and on the debate stage in phoenix, i think its going to be very apparent that there are no latinos, theres lack of minorities on this stage. Thats an issue that could come up and latino voters want to know what the democrats are going to do for them and President Trump is trying at least to say, look, this she what were trying to do, the presentation, obviously President Trump is taking a different tact in regards to immigration. Hes right to reach out the Business Community at least saying we want to bring in more workers for you. Julie, we havent talked too much about Pete Buttigieg speaking of latinos, has a new spanishlanguage ad running. He has a challenge running in front of him. Two strong showings in iowa and New Hampshire, overwhelming white states. And buttigieg has struggled with his record in south bend on issues of policing, on issues that are important to minority communities and theres a lack of confident when he talks to minority voters and you hear it all all the time when you go then into the crowd and ask voters, they just dont think hes quite as comfortable. For his campaign to go on, and he has the money to do it, he needs to prove to democrats that he can draw support from the core of this party. He has a big challenge in proving that he can carry that mantle forward. Pierre, the black voters i talked to in South Carolina, some of them are concerned about Michael Bloomberg, the stop and frisk, we talked to Amy Klobuchar about her prosecution of a black teenager, so when they look at those issues, how important it is to black voters especially with stop and frisk with Michael Bloomberg . Extremely. Many africanamerican voters look at the empathy issue, can you put yourself in the position of africanamericans on this issue . At least early on, bloomberg did not, hes now apologizing for it. But heres what i mean. If youre an africanamerican like i am and i have a son, even if he were living in a highcrime area i wouldnt want my son pulled over just because hes black and frisked. Because theres no evidence that he did anything wrong. And thats the issue, empathy. And Pete Buttigieg said he has to make progress on this. Did that resonate . Is that enough to hear a candidate, look, im going to do better, or an Amy Klobuchar . I think the africanamerican voters are still getting to know these people, theyll be absorbing a lot of information. Well have to do our job to provide it. And theyre all trying to change all that. Thanks very much to all of you. Well be right back. You. Well be right back. Before we go on this president s day weekend, we honor our fellow americans who serve and sacrifice. In january and the first half of february, ten Service Members died overseas supporting operations in afghanistan, iraq and east africa. Thats all for us today. Thanks for sharing part of your sunday with us. Check out world news tonight and have a great president s day weekend. D have a great president s day weekend. Coming to the bay area today and tomorrow. A look at what theyre doing to win your vote. Plus the coronavirus evacuees coming back to the u. S. Americans flying this morning after weeks in quarentine. Why their road home is far from over. Good morning to you. You are seeing that correctly, that is a marine layer from mt. Tam, and, yeah, we have another pretty mild day on the way but changes are ahead for your president s day holiday. Ill have them next for as soon as i started talking about putting term limits on congress, washington insiders went crazy. They said term limits are bad, that theyll break government. What a joke congress is working fine for politicians and corporations, but its not doing anything for real people on climate, health care or gun safety. The only way we get new ideas is electing new people, including a president willing to shakeup washington. Im tom steyer and i approve this message.
