Santa clara county is still the hardest hit with 263 total cases. That is more than twice the total of the second most affected county san mateo. It has 110 cases. Overall the bay area has 672 total cases and 11 deaths. Tonight governor gavin newsom urged young people to do their part to prevent these numbers from growing. Socially distance yourself from others. Just use common sense. Be a good neighbor. Be a good citizen. Those young people that are still out there on the beaches thinking this is a party, time to grow up. Time to wake up. Time to recognize its not just about the old folks. We talked to a general manager at a bar, and she made a great point. She said what does the weekend really even mean now for all these bars and restaurants that are selling alcohol . We walked earlier to see how these businesses are adjusting. This wine bar residual sugar wine bar, theyre offering bottles to go, which they never use to do before. Lets keep walking down locust street and seeing whats open, whats closed and whats changed. As we walked down a florist shop said reopen on april 7th. Ramon rotisserie changed their patio window to a takeout winter. Next we talked to the owners of la conta, a mediterranean bar and grill. They said they are only getting a few orders a day. We just have a few people maintaining the orders. Reporter a bar and restaurant thats been in the community for at least 40 years. They were hub taps. Now theyre broderick. Were down to five. Reporter they never thought theyd see the day where they would be selling alcohol at their front door. Never thought wed see the time. Its definitely its going to be in the books. Reporter but theyre staying positive and are grateful to those that are ordering takeout. Lauren, thanks. State officials are moving tons of supplies needed by healthcare workers across california. You are looking at video provided by the state showing items received from the Strategic National stockpile. Those shipments included more than 358,000 n95 masks. Ment. Iforniauestedven. 2,ce s. That includes another 20 million n95 masks. Earlier this evening Governor Newsom talked about the capacity to increase hospitals in california. Some of the projections that we put out make it clear that we will need an additional 19,500 beds in order to meet our midway projections as it relates to the issue of covid19. We have Surge Capacity within the Hospital System of a little over 10,000. So were out there trying to procure 10,000 units. I mentioned the 10,000 beds. Part of the governors plan calls for working with the army corps of engineers to convert hotel rooms, college dorms, and other facilities into rooms where patients can be treated. Meantime, a surge in patients has john muir consolidating operations in the east bay. Staff will be shifted to the Urgent Care Centers in berkeley, brentwood, walnut creek and pleasanton. It is also taking extra precautions with patients. Anyone who comes in will get a mask. Santa Clara University is now notifying people possibly exposed to a law student whos tested positive for coronavirus. That infected student is now selfisolating at their home off campus. Santa clara county Officials Say the student last visited and us on march 6th. The Santa Clara Convention center will be converted into temporary medical stations. It will provide shortterm care for people who do not have covid19 as the county expects an increase in demand at hospitals as covid19 cases rise. The Medical Center will add 250 beds and operate a small pharmacy. Preparations began today. Health officials do hope to have the medical station ready by next week. President trump talked about efforts to obtain medical supplies like masks while speaking to reporters today. He said governors like gavin newsom are free to work on finding their own ways to get what their states need. Gowns faster or masks, good masks, faster, or other things faster, thats good. We do have a lot of i mean, the coordination with the ships that were sending in, as you know, the medical ships that were sending in, and even cruise liners were going to be sending in probably cruise liners into some areas, particularly california and in particular new york. But if somebody could do something faster, if they can order that mask faster than us, i want them to be able to do it. President trump also shared that he believes other states may not have to issue shelters in place orders like here in california. A south bay company has just received emergency approval from the federal government for a coronavirus test. One of the top executives with that company describes the difference between current tests and ones that are about to be shipped to hospitals. Which means you collect a specimen. It can be out of a car or pretty much anywhere. But then it gets batched with a bunch of other specimens sent in batches to the Reference Lab that takes time. And then the Reference Lab takes time to build up the batches, run the batches. And all that adds up to days of turnaround time. Tonight his office stating that complications from pneumonia arose after he fell while running and fractured a rib. We spoke to several of his colleagues. Tonight California Democratic congressman is in Critical Condition. I havent been able to get mssages returned for about a week now. So i think hes in pretty bad shape. Reporter he last saw his colleague last week. He was sore. He had fallen on a run. Hes a big runner and broken a rib. So he was in a lot of discomfort. But i think the pneumonia set in probably not long after that. Reporter after that fall his Office Confirmed tonight that his condition worsened and said, in part, the doctors are doing everything they can to care for the congressman. In the north bay, shoppers were thrilled this morning to find a new supplies of paper towels and toilet paper at a target in san rafael. They had a lot of bounty paper towels and they did have toilet paper when i was in there. I never knew id be so happy buying paper towels and toilet paper. Shoppers are still seeing some shortages though. You might see empty shelves of cold and flu medicine. Despite some items selling out at times, wholesale grocery suppliers in the bay area say the supply chain is healthy. An East Bay Church is finding new ways to offer confessions to then. The Catholic Community of pleasanton is offering drivethru confessions at the st. Augustine Church Parking lot this afternoon. They stood six feet away from peoples cars to hear confessions and give absolution. For the first time it was amazingly successful. Roughly 60 to 70 people came in their cars to celebrate gods love and mercy in the season of lent. We will continue to do this every saturday throughout the Coronavirus Crisis until that has passed as a way to help people connect with god and prepare for the great feast of easter. Drivethru confession is happening every saturday, and the clergy is asking for the sake of confidentiality to keep only one person per car.
