There are now close to 1500 people infected with thousands more awaiting test results. The number of deaths is steadily rising, at least 27 people have died from coronavirus. President trump today declared a major disaster decoration for the state, because of the pandemic. Santa clara county reported two more deaths today from the coronavirus pushing the regional total up to 13. It is by far the most cases in the bay area, topping 300. But every county now has reported cases. Napa county, confirming today, two residents there have been infected. If was the last county in the, it was the last county in the region to have a case of the disease. The bay area total is just shor short of the 800 mark. Weve been getting questions from lake and Mendocino County and Mendocino County has one case and lake county has not had anyone infected. The president s major disaster declaration will bring in badlyneeded federal help to the state. It includes everything from mask care to unemployment assistance. The president activated the natural guard in california, washington and new york. It will cost the states nothing and gives them full control. Also, he is sending a hospital ship to l. A. The Naval Hospital ship, the usns mercy, which is an incredible ship, these two ships are incredible. One on the west coast, one on the east coast, deployed to los angeles, to add emergency surge medical capacity. The mercy is expected to arrive within a week. It has 12 fully equipped operating rooms, a thousand bed hospital, a medical lab and a pharmacy. President trump is also sending large quantities of medical supplies within the next 48 hours. As coronavirus cases continue to increase in the bay area, so does the need for medical supplies. The areas major hospitals say they are in need and now theyre asking for donations. Reporter well, eric, right now, many of these hospitals are okay, but it could be a much different story in just two to three weeks. A garage full of masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer, being donated to Bay Area Hospitals, by bella nails in san mateo. One of my longtime clients texted me and asked if there is any way i can help. Vivian nguyen did just that, by working with suppliers to donate 42,000 gloves and more than 1300 masks this. As coronavirus cases continue to rise. And Bay Area Hospitals are put to the test. Its challenging. Ill be honest with you. Because with the market, and the amount of supply availability. Reporter specialty medical swabs and gowns are in high demand at ucsf. They along with others like stanford are asking for things like unused n95 and surgical masks, and unopened packages of gloves, and unused protective goggle, and sanitizer. For the region, thats where a lot of the ppe manufacturing has been, and so when those started shutting down, our suppliers started getting impacted. Reporter ucsf students at the front line sunday, when we spoke with them, they had received more than 8,000 donated items. Were getting masks, surgical masks, and n95 masks, which is a lot of people bought for the wildfires and were also getting a lot of gloves, goggles and face shields and bunny suits. It feels good to help. There has been a lot of friends and family on social media who have reached out who are willing to help fund the cost for this, because obviously it takes a whole village. Ucsf is getting help from sales for, the ceo tweeted today that the sales force Community Delivered 9,000 masks to the hospital. It is now working to deliver another five million this week, along with other critical personal protective equipment. Santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez held a different kind of press conference this afternoon to update the countys efforts to respond to the coronavirus. She kept her social distance by holding a conference call, with Santa Clara Valley Medical Center chief executive officers paul lorenz and other officials. County officials are preparing to treat a surge of critical ill patients if the virus spreads. That plan would include looking at all 2100 adult beds that we can equip and staff for critical ill patients. Lore enz says people without covid19 would be moved to other facilitates to accommodate the more seriously infected patients. One of those facilities is the city of santa claras convention center. It will be for up to 250 people who need medical care. President trump has called for eight of these federal medical stations to be set up in california, providing 2,000 additional hospital beds. She and her husband have been self quarantining for a week and will continue to do so for another week, per the quarantine guidelines. Gomez is feeling much better, and her husband never had any symptoms. Well have more of an update on the family tomorrow, right here on abc 7. Hayward will take matters into its own hands tomorrow when the city opens up its own covid19 testing site. The site will be located near fire station seven apt and huntwood avenue. The hours from 9 00 in the morning until 6 00 in the evening. 200 to 350 tests will be administered daily, fwree ree o charge, open to first responder, medical personnel, and anyone who feels sick with symptoms of the virus. We obviously do have limited test kits each day, so we will test as many people as we can. W are working with the surrounding communities and the sal me da county Health Department to help other cities with test sites. The city is opening the site to alleviate pressure from Emergency Rooms an hospitals which is anticipating a surge in patients. And we went down to the airport, and the airport had been surrounded by the peruvian military and they were basically barring anyone from coming into the airport. And the family is not alone. Theres also a facebook group, over 3,000 members, who say theyre also american, stuck in peru. Hoping for the u. S. Government to get back to them, and fly them back home. California congressman jared hubman says at least 30 of his constituents, including the family we talked about are stranded overseas. What is the u. S. Doing to bring the families back . Right now theyre really not and that is part of our frustration. The state department is giving useless advice, telling people to search the private airlines web sites for flight, and flights are getting canceled. Today, the words from President Donald Trump during the press conference were directed to this group of americans. Were working very hard on getting a young group of people out of peru. Hundreds of quarantined passengers from the grand princess cruise ship are just a day or two from getting their freedom back. The National Weather service said the storm was capable of producing small hail. But some of us couldnt see much, or any precipitation at all. It was quite a range. Some areas had sunshine.
