Reporting live in San Francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 i keep telling people its really eerie. The surge we have been anticipating has not yet come. In preparation we have built out capacity, and we have delayed or canceled elective procedures, and we tried to make the hospital as empty and prepared as possible for an influx of patients. On the peninsula, a Skilled Nursing facility they are our vulnerable population. And they have access to tests, not just today but ongoing. A Skilled Nursing facility considered a risk of coronavirus cases, and they are facing a testing shortage. They had at least 13 cases and one presumed death. Its unclear if Health Workers were able to get tested. The mayor, as you just heard, testing is the biggest concern. They took precautions to fight the spread. After today hayward is reopening its own free center, and its opening back up for anybody showing symptoms, like a fever over 100 degrees or shortness of breath. Its going to be open to anybody regardless of the immigration status. Governor newsom is holding a News Conference every day to update the state on its response to covid19. Today he is expected to launch the initiative to help older californians connected while staying at home. We will see what the details are when we watch the Conference Live at noon. Happening today workers at whole food Stores Across country are planning a sickout. They are demanding hazard pay for workers that come in and sick pay for those that decide to stay home. Julian Julian Glover has more on this. We know whole foods is opening up for folks 60 and over, and only allowing certain numbers of people in the store at some time, and now the employees are threatening a sickout today. The move has the potential to close stores in the bay area and across the country, and employees say they are forced to work under these conditions to keep the stores open. They are asking for guaranteed hazard pay for all scheduled hours worked, and paid leave for self quarantine, and also new policies to facilitate social distancing inside the stores between workers and customers. Theres no indication of exactly how many whole foods employees across the country will be taking part in the sickout today, and if it has the potential to close stores or slow operations to keep the shelves stocked. Thank you, julian. The governor signed an executive order giving Small Businesses an additional 90 days to file taxes and make tax payments. The same order also allows for mailin dmv renewals. California is also waiving continuing education requirements for several professions. The number of cases in the bay area surpassed 2,000. There are 2,275 cases across the 10county region. Santa clara now has 848 cases. It also reported three new deaths for a total of 28. Marin county saw its deaths jump from 1 to 4 bringing the bay areas total to 56. To our north, is here. Last week we saw the curve start to take shape and its obviously getting steeper. What we want to see is the line flatten out and that would mean the spread of the virus is slowing. Yesterday was the single highest jump in one day since the outbreak started. Nearly there are 165,000 cases, according to Johns Hopkins university. More than 3,000 people have died, and most of those people are in new york state. This is unlike anything you can seen before. You will see it increasing, and you will see it everywhere. New york is just first. Governor cuomo is also calling on healthcare workers to come out, and our governor, gavin newsom is asking for the same thing, as los angeles is seeing a spike in cases. She says droplets have the potential to travel up to 27 feet. The full study is published in the journal of the medical association. The cdc and the World Health Organizations has recommended six feet apart, and the question has been raised should there be more than six feet distance. We are hearing more of the absolutely heartbreaking stories coming from healthcare workers fighting the crisis on the front lines. They are making sacrifices across the country and being separated from their families as they work nonstop to slow the spread. This morning, hospital workers on the front lines, fearful, exhausted. I worried about bringing the virus home from work to my family. Shes an and she is intebaiting coronavirus patients on her own, and she already updated her will and is living separately from her family. Sarah moore, a nurse in st. Paul, minnesota, and a selfproclaimed germaphobe said she did everything right but still tested positive for the virus. I couldnt get out of bed. I felt laike i was hit by a truck. Doctors and nurses describe the emotional toll of being the last ones with dying patients. I just came from a patients room. Hes actively dying, a positive diagnosis of covid19, and his family couldnt come so i had to facetime his family. This is a popup lab made up of more than 50 voluntary scientists from uc berkeley and ucsf. Its hard to say how many we will do initially, but we have the capacity to ramp up to 1,000 a day and potentially higher than that. This is an important way to address the virus right now.
