KGO Nightline July 13, 2024

Going to dance. Nightline will be right back. Michael vasquez come over here. Ive heard such good things about you, your company. Well, i wouldnt have done any of it without you. Without this place. This is for you. Michael, you didnt have to. And, were going to need some help with the rest. Youve worked so hard to achieve so much. Perhaps its time to partner with someone who knows you and your business well enough to understand what your wealth is really for. That could mean an increase byin energy bills. You can save by setting your heat to 68 or lower. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. Or just letting the sun light your home. Stay well and keep it golden. Good evening. Thanks for joining us. Its a war against an invisible enemy, but with each battle new clues about just how covid19 attacks. Things none of us, not even doctors knew, just a few short weeks ago. Tonight the medical detectives hunting down mysterious symptoms coming closer to solving the puzzle of this pandemic. This is a little bit more of the process, getting hooked up to the dialysis machine. Its been a month since evans survived the worst of coronavirus. Now dialysis. They said i have pneumonia in my left lung and the flu. What many thought of as a respiratory disease now in question with doctors and patients reporting a slough of patient. Theyre calling it covid toe. Came this close to dying from kidney failure. About 31 of confirmed covid infections presented with pink eye or other eye findings. The virus seeming to attack not just the lungs but the gut, the heart, the kidneys of the even the brain. What were seeing is organ damage all over the place. People are dying of a disease that we to not understand. Thousands of people, old and young, and yes, there are young people dying. They are dying of a disease that does not make sense to us. Tonight, more than three months after the first reported covid cases in the United States we take you inside the medical world, where theyre racing toward solutions in real time. Seeking to unravel the mystery of the virus which has taken so many lives. Were like medical detectives, and you get clues from all around the world. People say theyre throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. It is true. I think this is a situation that never happened in medicine in many, many, many years. Last month, sean evans was planning a summer wedding, excited to walk down the aisle with his fiance. But the father of two said he knew something was wrong when he began experiencing the telltale signs of covid. I would lie down and have really bad coughing spells where i couldnt breathe. I lost my sense of taste, smell. My body ached. I understand you had an underlying condition before you tested positive. I have high Blood Pressure and diabetes. After a week of ignoring his symptoms he finally went to the hospital where he not only tested positive for coronavirus, he was shocked to learn his kidneys were failing. The one test they did was supposed to be a 20, mine was 200. You basically went off the charts. Yeah, they told me if i waited another day or so i wouldnt be here now. Doctors started dialysis immediately. My heart just sunk. It really, really scared me. I wanted to see my kids grow up and all this, yeah. It really hit hard. Diagnoses like like like more kmocommon. Now a theory emerging that the answers could lie not in the organs but in the bloodstream. Doctors around the globe reporting increased blood clotting. Why is clotting so dangerous . If the blood is clotted off the organs dont work. The doctor says he first noticed a connection between blood clots and coronavirus after studying autopsy reports. I feel like youre the Sherlock Holmes of this medical detective story. You really began connecting the dots between what was coming out of china and seen in italy. Patients would have inability to get oxygen out of the air into their blood and Carbon Dioxide out. Their lungs were not stiff. When you see that pattern, not inflammation in the lung itself but a blood vessel problem. A growing number of hospitals prescribing clot busters for severe covid19 patients, but for some the powerful medicines proving dangerous, something amanda has seen first hand as her husband battles against covid in a los angeles hospital. Hes been sedated now for 22 days. It was, treatment fatigue. No other symptoms. His case seemed a mystery from the onset. He had some chills but it was fatigue, not even body aches. We confused. We would watch the news and be like, could this be . As his condition worsened, nick was rushed to the icu. He says, honey, they want to put me under. They want to put a ventilator in to help my breathing so my body can rest so i can kind of heal, and my body is fighting itself. Weeks later, a devastating blow, blood thinners to reduce clotting in his leg were causing intern internal bleeding. The doctors were forced to amputate his leg over the weekend. This afternoon, amanda taking to tram wi instagram with a hopeful update. The doctor just reassured me again that this is the marathon. And we are in it to win it. And that it is, it could shall today. It could be tomorrow. It could be a week. It could be months. But we just need him to wake up. Across the country, Clinical Trials are ramping up to investigate the connection between blood clotting and covid. But the doctor cautions that its still just conjecture. We dont want to give them a medicine that is dangerous and leads to a catastrophic bleed for example for a patient who otherwise would have gotten better. How optimistic are you that youre onto something. Im optimistic were onto something. Whether it translate noos into therapies that will help, time will tell. Life saving caution, it can be very thin. We still dont have a perfect answer. How aggressive have you got in using anticoagulants or blood thinners . We have gotten very aggressive. Theyre put on heparin fusion. With covid19, aggressive treatments and calculated risks can pay off. It did for his patient, tetu. We started him on heparin. Youre doing multiple things and its difficult to know what worked. You threw everything you had at him. Yes, we did. One month ago, tetus wife amanda was preparing for the worst as he fought for his life on the ventilator. We didnt think he was coming home. He was the first to be treated with remdesivir in his hospital. A week after arriving his condition took a dive, leading dr. Osborne to turn to a more invasive procedure, an ecmo. You suck the blood out of a large vein, it goes through a pump and then through a membrane lung and return it to another large vein, like dialysis for the lungs. And so this machine basically filters and oxygenates your blood for you. Yeah, it removes Carbon Dioxide and infuses oxygen. Dr. Osborne learned how to use the highly specialized machine while at a german hospital during the height of the iraq war. Now he applies combat mentality on these battlefields as he navigates gutwrenching dilemmas about who to save. There was a 44yearold who needed to go on ecmo and an 82yearold in a bed. And we talked to the family and said are you willing to move your father out of his room and move him to a lower level of care . Dad lived a good life. He would want to do this. And its the right thing to do. So they allowed us to put a 44yearold on ecmo, who was quite sick. Hes now getting ready to go home. Its the longest five minutes of waiting ive ever done in my life. For tetu, those aggressive treatments and outside the box thinking worked. Woo my baby hi earlier this month, this f the are you okay . I will halove you so much. Thank you doctors and nurses for saving our dad thank you. Hes now slowly finding footing in a new reality. We have to do that about three times a day. Heart rate 91 per thats better than it has been, believe it or not. There are a lot of blurry memories i have, flashbacks to neardeath experiences. Ive talked to a therapist in response to that. I want to be here for my kids and wife. Thats why ive fought so hard to be here. I need them as much as they need me. One day at a time, getting a little stronger each day. When we come back, a mysterious recovery that left interests speechless. A woman immediately intubated within minutes of dying, off the ventilator just four days later and now looking to return the favor. Now, theres skyrizi. Things are getting clearer, yeah i feel free to bare my skin yeah thats all me. Nothing and me go hand in hand nothing on my skin thats my new plan. Nothing is everything. Keep your skin clearer with skyrizi. 3 out of 4 people achieved 90 clearer skin at 4 months. Of those, nearly 9 out of 10 sustained it through 1 year. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. Youre about to meet one new york woman back from the brink, grateful to join the ranks of those recovered from covid19 after the tireless work of heroes. [ applause ] its a moment were seeing more and more lately. Healthy Covid Patients finally leaving the hospital, flanked by the heroes who helped save their lives, but edwina kaine was determined to make her tee par tour unique. I said when i walk out of here, i promise you, before i leave, im going to dance. And i kept my promise. And she sure did, with a signature twerk as she got into the car. [cheers and applause] this triumphant moment for edwina came after eight days in the hot. Four of which she was on the ventilator. Her interests descri doctors describe her recovery miraculous. We were watching hour by hour seeing. But towards the third day she started to improve. And she improved dramatically. Day four, day five, she was ready to get out of the ventilator. And that was a miracle. For edwina, covid19 started with what she thought was a code, then a persistent cough. I was just feeling like a little ick ey, a little off. Days later after waking up from a nap she was unable to breathe. Being diabetic left her more vulnerable to the virus. A tube down the throat was inevitable. There weighs as no way we could anything else. Placed on a ventilator, her chances looked grim. 88 who were placed on a ventilator later died. But miraculously, four days after arriving at richmond medical center, she surprised all her doctors and nurses. We had to rush in and take the tube out, otherwise she was going to take it out herself. Edwinas condition continued to improve rapidly. Her spirit charming the medical team by her side. Her energy took the whole entire unit, the medical staff, the nurses, medical assistant, they all got to be friends with her. On april 10th, edwina left the hospital, forever grateful to the heroes who refused to let her die. How do you say thank you to the men and women working around the clock risking their lives to take care of people like yourself who are stricken . You guys actually taught me, hey, theres hope. And i cant, actually, i cant, i dont even know how to thank you enough. Her joyful departure just as inspiring for dr. Francesco and his team. What was that like wheeling her down the hall and watching her cheered on by everyone . The thing is the whole hospital needed a moment hilike that. We were being critically hit by a lot of people dying and very sick and we needed a motivation. While i was interviewing the doctor we arranged for edwina to join our video call to surprise her doctor. How are you . How are you doin you look wonderful. Thank you. Its because of you you did go home i made it i made it she says she had recently found her own apartment after moving out of a homeless hell t shelter while working two jobs.
