One of the Largest Police protests weve seen in the bay area happening right now in San Franciscos Mission district. Lyanne melendez brings us the very latest live. Reporter well, dan, ive lived here in San Francisco for i can tell you ive seen people here at this protest that i havent seen in years and that tells you that people are motivated, that they believe that coming out here will bring change. And from sky 7 youve seen the amazing video, the crowds, massive amounts of people here joining in this protest. To me it looks like the United Nations out here, different nationalities, different races, different ages, by the way. And to think this was all organized by two young adults who were inspired, by the way, by two youth in oakland whom earlier this week organized their own march, a big rally in oakland. They reached out to them and put it on instagram, and here we are. We are the future. The future is in our hands. It is in our responsibility to make it ours. And today were declaring that. Reporter and let me just tell you that we are currently on 16th and delores. The crowd is in that direction. The reason why were out here and people are walking by us, right, but the reason we are out here is because we rely on cell service. And when you have too many people using cell phones we cannot go live, so thats why were here. I wanted to make that very clear. What i have seen is people being very responsible, they are all wearing masks. If they didnt bring a mask, and i havent seen anybody without a mask, theyre providing masks and giving people water, giving people hand sanitizers, giving people food just to stay healthy so its very well organized and just coming from the heart. Thank you, lyanne. Hundreds of protesters have gathered outside city hall. Hayward does have a curfew. It comes after vandalism and looting that followed peaceful protests last week. East palo alto protesting in memory of george floyd. Several hundred people marched peacefully saying they wanted to be part of history and one parent told us she brought her young son to the event because she wants him to know there is peace out here and there are people who love him. Black lives matter black lives matter in the south bay a group of Peaceful Protesters marched chanting black lives matter as you can hear and called out the names of americans killed during violent encounters with police. One of the marchs organizers told abc 7 news they hope people can defeat racism in their local communities. Guard steph curry joined marchers at oaklands lake merritt to denounce racism and violence by police. The group stopped at several intersections to express their grief including this moment and video provided by the warriors. We fight for freedom. They tell us Klay Thompson and looney also took part in todays peaceful march. Tear gas has been deployed here and around the country but now there are calls for police to stop using it as a crowd control measure. Abc 7 News ReporterLaura Anthony is in the east bay. Reporter from walnut creek to the south bay and in Oakland Police deployed tear gas to disperse large crowds. City leaders and doctors are urging police to stopinrests of. In oakland three city councilmembers sent a player to the police chief, quote, were itinto ue y to halt the use of tear gas for crowd control during the covid19 pandemic. Weve been getting complaints about tear gas getting into the homes of seniors who then cant breathe, hitting people who had nothing to do with anything wrong. Reporter oakland isnt the only city used tear gas. It happened here in walnut creek right in this intersection earlier this week. The widespread use of tear gas recently in the bay area and beyond prompted some doctors to express concerns about potential harm to a community trying to fight off the coronavirus. Using tear gas now in the middle of a respiratory epidemic is antithetical to good public policy. The protesters, their eyes will be watering, they will be coughing and sneezing. Their whole respiratory system is irritated and they will just be spewing their respiratory droplets around everyone nearby which in this case is going to be a lot of people. Reporter top officials in oakland told abc 7 news they are reviewing their request to use tear gas. At this point they have no comment. We move to developing news in vallejo. The Police Department is talking about a Police Shooting that left a man dead. Melanie woodrow is live in vallejo. What are police saying today . Reporter the big question here is whether this 22yearold was attempting to surrender. Vallejo police chief says he was on his knees when an officer shot and killed him. Sean monterrosa was on his knees when a Vallejo Police officer fired at him five times through his vehicles windshield. One of those shots hit and killed the 22yearold police say they believed was armed. The Fatal Shooting came after a night of multiple calls for looting including to the walgreens. Vallejo police chief Shawnee Williams said it he was ing to get into adppre eagetawa vehicle before changing his mind. This individual appeared to be running to the black sedan but suddenly stknlid,ngpeop pos the butt of a handgun. Investigations later reveal that the weapon was a long, 15inch hammer tucked into the pocket of oreep ratshirt. Te cmonterrosa is an veteran. Chief williams did not release his name. Of the two getaway vehicles, one ran and injured an officer. The suspects in the black seda got away. Chief williams said the department has made many changes since he arrived including to its deescalation policy. How was deescalation used here . Well, i will say this, maam, when they responded to that area, to the walgreens, the intent was to stop the looting and to arrest any perpetrators if necessary. The officers reacted to a perceived threat. Reporter the department has 45 days to release body worn video. Based on your experience of 27 years was this Excessive Force . Like i said, the District Attorney will look at this and our internal affairs unit will look at it. Reporter chief williams did not want to answer that question. As for the officer who fired the fatal shot, he has been placed on routine paid administrative leave and so have the witness officers. In vallejo, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. Another developing story right now a standoff in oakland. A man holding two Young Children in a home. Its been going on for nearly 12 hours now at a home near harmon and 57th avenue. Anchor eric thomas is live near the area right now. Whats the latest . Whats happening . Reporter police are still talking to the suspect. Theyve been talking to him all day long in hopes of giving himself up and release those two children. Its been a long wait in the heat for any sort of movement and police seem content to continue to wait. This started at about 5 30 this morning when officers on patrol in the area and shot Spotter Technology picked up a series of shots fired in the seminary neighborhood at 57th and harmon. The officers did not return fire. Police say the wife managed to get out of the house but 6 and 8yearold children are still in there. So far no one has been hurt and police hope to keep it that way. We are in communications with him. We want a peaceful resolution to this. We want him to let the children out of the house. We want to put the gun down to resolve this peacefully. Reporter a special police unit that helps deal with people with mental challenges has been called in aiding the s. W. A. T. Team. We are being kept a couple blocks away. Reporter it was activity last weekend that forced santa rosa to declare a curfew and then to box the downtown section. Imagine owning a business trying to stay afloat in a neighborhood turned semighost town. Its weird. Eerie. Reporter she would normally see 60 customers at noon. But not with the barricades and protests. Its a real eye opener were going backwards not forward. Reporter no other option and has continuing concerns. The order covering unincorporated parts of napa county including American Canyon expires thursday as does Solano Countys curfew but the city of vallejo issued its own order that runs indefinitely. At 6 00 the arrest of a woman accused of running down a demonstrator before being shot and wounded by police. The presidio will begin closing some roads to cars this weekend to give neighbors more room to get outside and be socially distant during the coronavirus pandemic. Destan only for the month of june. Other roads will allow some limited traffic for presidio residents but otherwise be reserved for pedestrians as well. Organizers say the closures will allow families with Young Children to use strollers and bikes on flat pavement. Its really fantastic because as you know there are 25 miles of hiking trails in the presidio but theyre pretty narrow. If you want more space in the park its a good idea to use the wide streets and the pavement is wonderful for firsttime bike riders. The program is called presidio slow streets.
