Adults have to wear masks at elementary schools, but student wont be required to. In middle and high schools, they will need face coverings on all the time. Social distancing will be required in aull classes. This is public and private schools. And it will be up to individual School Districts as to when and how they reopen. Oakland parents were asked last month to way eigh in on th kind of instruction they would like to see and results of that survey have been released. Lyanne melendez got a look at what parents are asking for. Reporter 4500 families participated in the survey offered by the Oakland Unified School district. Parents were asked how should the district reopen in the fall. A nonprofit helped with the survey. They want more regular communication with their teacher, they want more instructional minutes with their teacher. And they want more small group and one to one instruction in particular. Reporter most parents were fine with half day in school and half day of distanced learning. And they also favored one day of inschool instruction followed by Distance Learning the next day. While others said they supported yearround up. I dont see how it will work. Reporter and this mom has an incoming kindergarten. And she shared this video of them singing about starting school. She says her daughter may have to wait a year, she is undecided. They need contact and they need to touch each other, sit together. And if they are not able to do that in school, then it is not kindergarten. Reporter the American Academy of pediatrics issued a statement saying evidenc shows the dad pick, mental and physical benefits of inperson learning outweigh the risks from the coronavirus. And one thing is clear from the survey, the vast majority of parents said they did not want to see the same kind of Distance Learning their children experienced when the lockdown began.
