For many teachers across the country, they want to teach their kids in the classroom, and they know there are limits to remote learning, but the decision to return to inperson school is weighing heavily on many of them. As debate rages over how to safely get kids back in the s e grappling with the o backtoho dilemmas. Its hard for me to imagine my life without being in the classroom. Reporter choir teacher meaghan eiden has two kids of her own, one with asthma, the other diabetes. She left her job at a Texas High School this week over fears of bringing the virus home with i just felt like i was forced into a decision because i cant afford to wait. Reporter shes not alone. At stuyvesant high school, the prestigious Public School in new york city, 80 of teachers seeking exemptions from returning to classrooms and the number of teachers choosing not to come back in the fall has some in san antonio worried about a possible teacher shortage. Weve surveyed our teachers and we only had about 600 responses, but out of those 600 about 75 that they are extremely concerned and are not interested in going back in person. Reporter the American Federation of teachers, which represents a million teachers across 40 states, says nearly 40 of its teachers in florida are likely to retire or stop teaching earlier than expected due to covid. They say teachers should not have to go back to the classroom until transmission rates go down and there are Safety Measures in place including masks, social distancing and contact tracing, and they are willing to support teachers who decide to strike where those conditions are not met. When you go into teaching, its a joyful thing.
