Marissa is a nurse that lost 5 of 6 horses this week, 5 of the 6 horses when the lnu lightning complex tore through the property outside of vacaville. Her one horse that survived, ava, is being treated for severe burns at uc davis after her friends brotherinlaw was able to save her. Heres a conversation i had with marissa this weekend about her heartbreaking situation. Thank you so much for joining us to share your story. I want to say im for you loss. How are you doing and how is ava . I guess im doing okay. Avas doing phenomenal. I just actually got a call from uc davis ten minutes ago or so. Theyre taking her on walks to get out of the stall now and get a little bit more motion and will help her edema. That is good news. Walk us through the night that you were evacuated. You said it came so fast, there wasnt time for a warning. Yeah. So they had called for the warning, like a warning evacuation for the canyon before us so we got there and we got most of the horses off the property and then we were going to bring my herd of six was up at the top but as soon as we got the other horses loaded up the cops came through and were saying its coming up over the crest of the hill right now and we had to get out so me and my boyfriend we hooked my trailer up and we ran up to the top and i was trying to get the everyone but theyre all freaked out because the fires coming and we saw the glow start to come up over the ridge and it was so dark and smoky and i was calling them to come to me and right he called to him and i was able to get ava and firefly haltered and trying to load them into my old horse trailer but like as i got them haltered and walking up the gate the fire tornado was coming down over the mountain and i they wouldnt load because theyre freaking out. And they ran into a house that then caught fire . They ran to the second house on the property and thats the house that burned down and ava the brotherinlaw rob was able to get back to the house because he didnt leave the canyon completely. He bunked down in an empty field until he could get back to the house. The house that burned down is where they found a few of my horses, the only one that actually made it was ava and she he because of rob being there still he was able to send us a picture and we were able to when it was safe enough to get back we were able to get her out with a vet and she had to walk down just a huge hill, just burned to a crisp and she was breathing really hard and we had to make the call to put her down on the spot. But she is a fighter and she proved that she wanted to keep living so we animal control got her loaded up and brought her to uc davis and i met them outside with her at uc davis and i didnt think it was going to be okay. She was breathing so hard and fast but they got her stabilize really quickly and theyve been up dating me on everything and i have been able to go in and still see her. She is in the best of hands. We are lucky to have uc davis right here. Tell us about your horses. I cant even imagine. I assume its like losing a huge part of your family. Yeah. I feel like a lot of my life and identity is just been gone. Like everything i do i do for the horses and like i work a lot of overtime and been building up the herd i have for specific reasons and my main horse, my grandma bought him for me. I had firefly. A rare danish breed and i had brought her this year and she was about 3 months pregnant. The Natural Group of breeders have been amazing reaching out to me. How can people help . Well, its we have got some fundraisers going for myself and also kelsey james to try to recoup some of what we have lost and try to rebuild and help with the care of our animals going forward. And then also, of course, donating to uc davis because they have just been absolutely phenomenal. Thank you so much for sharing your story.
