A new study is out on the best face coverings to prevent coronavirus. Also this morning just days after President Trump said convalescent plasma was a breakthrough in treating covid19, some scientists are saying otherwise. Earlier i spoke with dr. Ryan ribeiro about these headlines. Its been just over a week since the fda granted emergency use authorization for convalescent plasma to treat covid19, but now in a new statement, the National Institutes of health says theres insufficient data regarding its effectiveness, so once again we have confusing messages coming from the government. What do you make of this . Emergency use authorization from the fda doesnt mean that something definitely works. It just means that we need to get it into the hands of more people to try it out and i think in the case of convalescent plasma here, the principle is very sound but the studies around convalescent plasma for covid specifically have had some significant limitations. A new video shows just how ineffective a face shield can be at protecting against the coronavirus. A study at Florida Atlantic university simulated a cough or a sneeze from a mannequins mouth and nose and compared how well the face shield did versus a typical facemask. What are your takeaways from that study . Face shields are unsecured around the outsides and while they block the big particles, those small particles you can see in their videos are dispersing throughout the room. I think another important thing they tested in that study was masks with those outlet valves that are sometimes popular because theyre very comfortable but as you can see in their demonstration videos, it just shoots particles straight out and across the room, so from a Public Health perspective really not good solutions. The Trump Administration is thinking about spending up to 250 million on a Public Health campaign using Public Relations experts and possibly even celebrities to clear up any confusion about coronavirus. What do you think about this approach and what do you feel are the top questions or issues that they should be communicating . One of the key points that a Public Health campaign will need to address is helping people sift through kind of the sea of misinformation ttaround this vo coming up, why people are seeing cell phones hanging from trees outside supermarkets.
