Reporter ama, the march on saturday was supposed to be an event at twitter headquarters. To protest the company banning some altright accounts but police had to shut it down just after it started. I interviewed Phillip Anderson at the daily city airbnb where he was staying just hours after a sucker punch knocked out his two front teeth at the rally he organized for this past saturday. What are we becoming that people are going to knock the teeth out of my mouth and punch me in the face and yell black lives matter at me. White people, okay . It doesnt make any sense to me, but thats what happened. Reporter anderson is a 25yearold immigrant from ethiopia, deported as a child by a texas family. Over the past year his farright activism and his suppor for President Trump brought him to the portland riots. Im not going to go home. I will not be intimidated. It must stop. Reporter and to the white house. He planned a march for this past saturday from u. N. Plaza to twitter headquarters. The entire event was literally just about big tech and their racism and oppression against me, banning me over 14 times, shadow banning my current account. Reporter but his flier for the event featured prominent leaders of the proud boys, a hate group according to the Southern Poverty Law Center and mentioned in the first president ial debate. What do you want to call them . Give me a name. White supremacists. Who would you like me to condemn. Proud boys. Proud boys, stand back and stand by. Reporter andersons flier drew the attention of the bay areas antifa movement. Social media posts called for an aggressive response to the rally. Why did you come here . The whole point right here. We dont have the right to peacefully protest. Obviously. Okay . We dont have the right to free speech. You werent buying it that it was just about free speech. Yeah, he can say what he wants and i can come say what i want. Thats what free speech is. I want to say, youre not welcome here. Please leave. Reporter San Francisco public shcool teacher max tolds me he was not antifa or part of saturdays violence but was there for the counterprotest. What i saw was individuals from the fascist side instigating and coming in and inciting so they could be portrayed as victims. Reporter before the event in response to a wave of criticism online and Death Threats according to anderson, he announced on social media that the proud boys would not attend. Like, im not, like, no one here is a proud boy. No one at the event was a proud boy. Reporter but just two weeks ago, anderson described himself as a member of the proud boys on twitter. Explain to me how were racist when the proud boys have dozens and dozens of black members, including myself, by the way. Reporter the counterprotesters vastly outnumbered andersons small group. He was attacked before the rally even began. Theyre trying to kill me. You knocked my teeth out for no reason. Youre not even willing to listen to me. You call me a white supremacist when im black. Youre making no sense. Reporter the crowd pushed against the barricades and the Police Ordered the rally to stop after ten minutes. They escorted anderson and others and kept the crowd at bay until their van arrived. This is wrapping up. Walking down Market Street. Reporter i saw people in black spraying antiproud boys graffiti and chasing an asian man in a red shirt. He was able to make it around the block to the police. They attacked this trump supporter, dousing him with pepper spray. He suffered a leg injury. The sfpd three Police Officers had to be treated. Counterprotesters shut down Market Street and now Phillip Anderson is being criticized by the proud boys leadership. So i hear youre running your mouth, phillip, and thats cool. And the few that did were sorely outnumbered by the enemy. Reporter once again Phillip Anderson has been suspended from twitter, facebook and instagram for violating their standards on promoting his event in San Francisco. On sunday the sfpd made an arrest in this attack, charging 35yearold Adora Anderson of whatsonville with mayhem and a hate crime enhancement. A gofundme account to help anderson fix his teeth is now at 28,000. He says hell use the extra to plan another rally. For the iteam, dan noyes, abc 7 news. Ama . Dion . Dan, thank you so much. The service is expected to wrap up at 9 00 p. M. Cortez joined the San FranciscoFire Department back in 2007. He died during training accident earlier this month. A celebration of life is planned for tomorrow morning at oracle park. That event is also private. Fire risk is increasing this week. A red flag warning will take effect tonight. Today the weather in San Francisco showed no hint of the danger ahead. Because of the upcoming fire danger, pg e says power shutoffs are likely. Starting on wednesday in parts of the east bay, north bay and south bay. As we take a live look outside now, abc 7 news weather anchor Spencer Christian is tracking the conditions. And spencer, where are these highrisk areas . Well, ama, right now its mainly the north bay, but could be expanded to other parts of the bay area. Whats developing is another offshore wind event. Although they dont look impressive right now, they are starting to get gusty, and as those winds become stronger, of course, they will be downsloping, drying out, warming up and increasing the risk for fire. So we have a red flag warning in effect from 11 00 tonight until looking at 8 00 a. M. Wednesday. And wind will be generally out of the northnortheast and gusts up to 40 Miles Per Hour or higher. Parts of marin county, sonoma county, napa county and lake county. Now, we also will probably have an upgraded warning for this area. Right now we have a fire weather warning watch going into thursday for virtually all the Higher Elevation of the bay area. Parts of this watch as i mentioned may be upgraded to a red flag warning. Dion . All right. Spencer, thank you. Lets turn now to our efforts to build a better bay area. We are looking out for your health during the coronavirus pandemic. Weve been tracking new cases in the bay area since march 1st. This graph shows what we where we are and that we are down considerably from the peak set in midaugust. But our downward progress, that appears to have plateaued. However, we are bucking a National Trend with the surge of coronavirus cases reported across most of the u. S. Mainly in the midwest. We are bracing for what could be the beginning of a third wave. Abc 7 News Reporter stephanie sierra joins us now live to break down the very latest totals. Stephanie . Reporter well, dion, if we look back nearly a month ago, 25,000 covid cases were reported nationwide each day. And now that daily average has doubled to 50,000 cases. And even though california isnt seeing as much of a spike, the governor was quick to point out today we could be there soon. A third wave of covid19 is moving quickly and broadly across the u. S. But if you look closely at california, the r effective number or rate of spread shows in the last ten days covid cases have declined slightly from 0. 99 to 0. 96. In other words, spread is considered stable. Its not surprising to ucsf lead epidemiologist dr. George rutherford. Were doing the right things. Weve decreased the effective reproductive number. Were limiting transmission. And its all going in the right direction. Reporter especially here in the bay area. State data indicates the rate of transmission in San Francisco, contracosta, san mateo, solano and napa counties is declining. While spread is stable in marin and santa clara counties. Sonoma county is the only one reporting a slight increase. But as rutherford pointed out weve been here before, right . We were doing great at the end of may and it got away from us. We dont want that to happen again. Reporter californias Positivity Rate has declined slightly over the past two weeks, but the governor made it clear today the 14day averages for both hospitalizations and icu admissions dont always give te full picture. If i put up a sevenday slide, that slide would show a positive increase, not a decrease. The same would be true of the icu admissions. If i put a sevenday slide, it would show an increase of 5. 4 . Reporter this means the incoming wave may just be beginning across the state. Not a good sign with three major holidays right around the corner. This is not a time for complacency. Holidays are very tempting. You want to, you know, go visit your friends. You want to go visit family. Its a time to hunker down. Hunker down and wait until a safe vaccine is approved. When that happens the essential workforce, health care workers, First Responders and highrisk populations will receive priority. The number of vaccines will be very, very limited. Reporter and not only limited but once vaccines have been approved, each company will have different storage requirements and distribution plans. So the process will take some time. But the state has launched a Vaccine Steering Committee that will be working through the logistics. Live in the newsroom, stephanie sierra, abc 7 news. Now, stephanie, from what we understand, both moderna and pfizer have these stretch goals as you can call them to have a vaccine ready by november, possibly december. Do we have an idea of how many doses could be ready by the end of the year . Well, the governor did say today bestcase scenario both companies will have a combined total of 45 million doses for the entire country by the end of this year. And that may sound substantial, but emp sighed today once you break it down the supply will be very limited during those beginning phases. All right. Stephanie, thank you so much. The message is pretty universal when it comes to coronavirus. Wear a mask. Next, meet the man handing them out for free. But i cant say i expected this. Because it was easy. To fight these fires, we need funding plain and simple. For this crisis, and for the next one. Prop 15 closes tax loopholes so rich corporations pay their fair share of taxes. So firefighters like me, have what we need to do the job, and to do it right. The big corporations want to keep their tax loopholes. Its what they do. Well, i do what i do. If yould like to help, join me and vote yes on prop 15. The fallout continues after the desecration of 7 News ReporterWayne Freedman finds now the incident is becoming politicized. Just two weeks before the election and theres no escaping politics. Even in the parking lot at marin civc center. Well, i think law and order has to be has to be appreciated. No justice, no peace. Reporter so this march into the building heading for the District Attorneys Office and all in reaction to this, one week ago, the pulling down of a statue of father Junipero Serra in san rafael on Indigenous Peoples day. They want the five people arrested to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. It was vandalism. It was illegal. Wanted to open up a dialogue, a dialogue with the church basically, and it kind of just got out of hand. Reporter lucina was there but not charged. Shes native american ancestry. Since the incident ive been threatened. My life has been threatened. My family has been threatened, do you understand that . Reporter back outside the d. A. s office, marchers waited to an audience. They want law and order and consistency. If a mosque was attacked, these people would be prosecuted to a hate crime, but because its a catholic church, they dont even want to prosecute. Reporter but today the archdiocese of San Francisco says it does want to prosecute. In fact, it held an exorcism right here to rid the spot of its evil. Is she willing to speak to us . Reporter as for the protesters, they never did see the district attorney. A spokesman delivered a statement saying theyre waiting for all of the evidence. Did you expect anything more . No. Reporter with the saint stuck in the middle. In san rafael, Wayne Freedman, abc 7 news. Also in the north bay, a marin county nonprofit is working to make sure everyone has a face mask, especially those who might be struggling to make ends meet. Abc 7 News ReporterCornell Bernard shows us this effort to help build a better bay area. We are giving them away to the community. Wonderful. Reporter Douglas Mundos spent monday afternoon reaching out to his district giving away free face masks. Mundo was executive director of the Multicultural Center of marin, a nonprofit serving thousands of families. Thousands of masks donated to his organization and other groups serving the community. He says its a big help. Sometimes, you know, buying a mask, it costs money from 5, 10, 15, 20 or more. Reporter these masks, 50,000 of them, are a gift from the Marin Community foundation. The nonprofit says it wants to protect essential workers in this community. Many of them doing essential work but they have a hard time financially. So our determination was to make these masks available. Reporter another effort, marin together a Publicprivate Partnership between the county, san raef, keizer and equip has set up these bins with mask and covid information inside envelopes. Theyre free for the community to come pick up whenever needed. Reporter the county says the canal district once had a 30 Positivity Rate for covid19, but over the past few months that number has decreased to 6 . We have seen the numbers reduces in marin county and also in the canal neighborhood and we hope that this will continue to improve that as well. Reporter Douglas Mundo plans to distribute more masks this week. In san rafael, Cornell Bernard, abc 7 news. Were about to see not one but two waves of fire danger headed our way.
