Were tracking fire danger as well. Lets get right over to meteorologist lisa argen. Good morning, lisa. Good morning, liz. All is calm right now with the south wind, an onshore flow. Here is live doppler 7 with the cloud cover. By the afternoon this will be abruptly changing. Northeasterly winds, 25 to 30 miles an hour. Youll feel that by dinner time with gusts up to 50. You could see possible downed trees and Power Outages if not from pg e but from poles coming down because of the wind. Relative humidity through tomorrow will be dropping below 10 even into the single digits. So this event is a 24 to 48hour event in the hills. As we look at sfo live, temperatures are in the 50s. The sun is coming out around the bay, 59 in mountain view. East bay hills camera, lots of clouds here. Looking at 53 in santa rosa, 59 in concord. The wind is blowing here. Its a light wind. That red flag warning, 8 00 tonight for most of us. In the north bay, napa, youll see those winds kick up by 11 00. Were looking at the sun coming up, partly cloudy conditions. By 4 00, the breeze gets going, windy tonight. Well talk about the winds across the bay area today and tonight, coming up. Pg e says hundreds of thousands of customers across Northern California would be hit by the power shutoffs with the fire danger so high. We have high confidence this will be the strongest fire event of the season so far. We have a little exposure in monterey, into the Santa Cruz Mountains and the east bay, Alameda County, contra costa, we then go into the north bay, napa, sonoma, lake, mendocino. Its a large scope, theres no doubt about it. Pg e says its ready to cut power for 386,000 customers if necessary. Its not immediately clear how many of those will be in the bay area, how many people will be affected here. According to pg es psps map, outages in the bay area could begin at 3 00 p. M. And continue in waves depending on the winds. The north bay would be targeted first, followed by the east bay and then the Santa Cruz Mountains. Restoration would begin tomorrow night and finish Tuesday Morning. Many communities in the north bay arent waiting and are already prepared for a power shutoff. As abc News ReporterLauren Martinez tells us, its because theyre counting on a Warning System thats been going through upgrades since the 2017 firestorm. This is like a backup backup. Reporter generators are ready to be turned on in calistoga in case of a projected Public Safety shutoff. Theyre shutting off half of california, thats crazy to me. Reporter denise manages this supermarket and says theyve sold out of blocks of ice and have had to restock bags of ice five times. She says people are buying flashlights and candles. Shes expecting the shutoff but hoping it doesnt happen. Personally im just tired. Ive thrown away a whole refrigerator of food three times in the past two months. Reporter the Santa Rosa Fire Department has added upwards of 20 engines throughout the country. Theyre gearing up for high winds. One for the upper elevations at 11 00 a. M. , and a second warning will go into effect at 8 00 p. M. For the valley floors. The last couple of events have stayed high and not transitioned down low. Calistoga residents tell me the warning sirens have come a long way. Its way better, we have the big signs going, as soon as you hear that sign go off, you know theres something up. Reporter for now its a wait and see game for First Responders and residents. Were having these huge fires. I dont know, you know, im not sure if shutting off the power is the answer. Reporter in calistoga, Lauren Martinez, abc 7 news. Abc 7 was at a battery store in San Mateo County where business is booming. People are stocking up on batteries and generators ahead of time. The store supervisor there told us two generators which sell the most are the 2200 which can power a onestory house and the 3000 which can power a twostory house. Sometimes its more than just a home. When pg e turns the power off, they want to be able to turn their wells on because theyre farmers. People want to power their refrigerators as well as lights and stuff like that. Generators begin at around 1,000 and they can run on several different kinds of fuels. In the east bay, the city of berkeley has taken the unprecedented action of telling some residents to think about evacuating now before the winds pick up. Abc 7 News Reporter more. This is a ravine on the other side of university of california land where there was married Student Housing until it was torn down a few years ago. So there are roads on the other side of this ravine that we can get to on foot. Reporter with the strongest wind event of the year projected to hit the bay area sunday, Berkeley Hills residents were urged to many, like frank, is taking put for now. We get traffic jams all the time. Reporter this is the only way in or out. I spoke to the mayor of berkeley who says theyre ready to respond in case of a fire. Fire engines are on standby. Were calling in mutual aid. We have police patrols. We have a crew thats ready to deal with downed trees or downed power lines to make sure that our roads are accessible. Reporter with this wind event also comes a potential pg e psps. Were facing a 20year wind event with gusts as fast as 60 to 70 Miles Per Hour in the highest peaks of the east bay hills, and extraordinarily low humidity. Reporter berkeley residents may lose power as early as 4 00 p. M. Sunday. Our house got a notice, we may lose power. But i think were, you know, preparing for that. Weve got some candles. Reporter some have gone through an emergency fire drill. Weve offered to show the route several times and groups of people have come. Reporter sunday will be the telling day. Several east Bay Regional Parks are closed today and monday and they include the anthony, and clairemont regional parks. We have a complete list on our website as well. The district says it will know more about the possible impact later today. The district says if the power does go out at the homes of these students, they can do their work offline and report it back to their teacher the first chance that they get. They say two officers in uniform were searching for a suspect in an undercover car. Thats when the suspect suddenly stopped behind them in his car. He took out a gun and pointed it in the direction of the officers. The officers opened fire, shooting the man multiple times. He was taken to the hospital and is currently in critical condition. Abc 7 is committed to building a better bay area. One of the areas were focused on is race and social justice. The San FranciscoPolice Department has created a new unit to help the citys Diverse Communities feel safe. Its called the Community Liaison unit. Mayor london breed says officers will help improve reporting of crimes and support victims of hate crimes. The unit is a team of five officers from the Departments CommunityEngagement Division and they will be responsible for the tracking of prejudicebased incidents, identifying patterns, and helping people navigate the criminal justice system.
