We want our voters to know they have curbside voting, we can bring their ballot out to them and they can vote in their car in this parking lot or they can drive through if they have their ballot already that we mailed to them. Reporter josie mooney just voted in her halloween costume. I lost my absentee ballot, i think i threw it out with a bunch of newspapers. Ive never not voted so i wanted to come early. Reporter cars were lined up dropping off ballots at the Alameda County courthouse. 20yearold kitani franklin is voting for the first time. Its my civic duty, excited to participate for the first time. Reporter early voting is outdoors on the courthouse steps, a Record Number of people already voted. We are at about 520,000 votes as of this morning received so far, which is 54 of our registered voters. Here in marin county, 19 locations open for inperson voting. 60 of the county has already voted by mail. Volunteers are helping out at this voting center, at the novato library. Feels like this year is the most important time ive ever voted and ive voted in every election since i was eligible. Reporter the bay area making sure their vote and voice is heard. Cornell barnard, abc 7 news. In San Francisco, a ballot trying to make it as easy as possible to exercise your vote and its important for everybody to have that right and to have easy access. That was warriors head coach steve kerr, he was there at the chase center to greet fans casting their ballots. There is a dropoff location there, and that dropoff location will be open through election day. A warriors facility in oakland and the arena of the Santa Cruz Warriors are also being used as polling sites and dropoff locations. In the south bay, nearly 100 voting stations opened in santa clara county. Abc 7 news stopped by one at levis stadium in santa clara. The stadium was chosing as a way to make it exciting and easy to fans to vote. Centers will be open 9 00 to 5 00 until election day when hours will expand from 7 00 a. M. To 8 00 p. M. In the north bay marin transit are offering freo encourage voter turnout and fares waived for riders. This will cost the agency about 25,000 based on current ridership levels, 60 of normal because of the pandemic. It will consider offering similar promotions for future elections. In california and in more than 40 other states across the country, the u. S. Has set a new global record for the number of cases reported in a single day. Nearly 99,000 cases were reported friday, surpassing a previous record set by india in september. California reported more than 5,000 new cases and that is well above the states daily average of nearly 4,200. Experts say this is only the start of this wave of infections. I know after months of rushing to get Homeless People in San Francisco off the streets and into hotels because of the pandemic, they will start to be moved out. Starting tomorrow, more than 500 Homeless People are going to be relocated but theres no clear plan on where theyre going to go. Case managers will work with individuals to figure out their best option. This first phase of relocation is set to finish by the years end. An estimated 2,400 Homeless People are currently housed in hotels throughout the city. In the east bay, parents are planning a rally today to reopen contra costa public schools. It will take place outside the countys office of education in pleasant hill. The rally is an extension of the reopen california Schools Movement started as a Facebook Group and grown to 10,000 members. The group is calling on Contra Costa County to resume inperson classes. They say Distance Learning isnt working and schools have had seven months to prepare to bring students back. And this halloween due to the pandemic, people were urged not to gather at party hot spots in San Francisco like the castro. They raised 65,000 from Community Members to cover vital expenses during the closure, back open for business with capacity limited to 25 and as a gesture to thank the community for their generosity, the Bowling Alley held a socially distanced outdoor party. Pretty nice to see. If you take a walk around downtown livermore this time of year youll probably notice a number of trees covered in sweaters. Its the effort by a group of fiber artists hoping to bring joy and art into the town. Melissa pixcar has the story. They call it the tree sweater forest to beautify livermore. When im putting them up, people are like theyre back . This is great. Some people are like why are you putting a sweater on the tree . They dont get cold. It is created to the art appreciation and an opportunity to share back some joy with our community. The tree sweaters coming up, fall is coming. Because of whats going on, at least this got to go up this year so it helps people realize everything is going to be okay. After the sweaters are taken down, we make sure it goes to local animal shelters where pups and kittens waiting for homes will have something cushy to lay on, something comfortable while they wait for their new family. The phenomenon happens whenever there are two full moons in the same month, hence the saying once in a blue moon. This was the first blue moon of halloween since 1944. The moon can sometimes appear blue because of dust or smoke particles in the earths atmosphere. And plenty of people got their own photos and video of this, i hope you can see, here you can see people gathering there in the city in alamo square to film the moons rising, in the distance, you can see the top of city hall lit up orange for halloween and there is the moon right there above it. Reporter outdoor ice skating rinks have become a bay area holiday tradition. By the first week of november union square would look like a winter wonderland. This year these traditions are put on ice. During the winter i lot of people look forward to ice skating. This might be the first year they wont have the traditions. Reporter Connor Spence decided not to open. If somebody got sick or my staff id feel horrid. Reporter none of the usual outdoor ice skating rinks in the bay area are opening this year, that includes the rinks at embarcadero and union square in San Francisco, san mateo, napa, marin and walnut creek. Safety is one reason. Money is the other. It cost norcal ice 200,000 to operate the rink. In years past id cycle through 500 to 600 skaters on a busy day. Cut that down by 25 , 30 , theres no way to afford the equipment and staffing required to operate a rink. Reporter the cancellations have been devastating to emery likens. Normally wed be doing maintenance getting ready for the season. Reporter he owns special ice which helps operate more than a dozen seasonal ice rinks in california. This whole tent is our ice rental skates. Reporter normally hed have a team of employees working full time testing the equipment and loading them up on trailers. Hundreds of seasonal employees would be ready to staff the ice rinks. Instead, his storage yard is quiet this year. The zambonis are collecting dust. When i have to make phone calls to 150 people that have worked for us and say we dont have anything for you this year, those are tough phone calls to have. Reporter the money he got from the Paycheck Protection Program for his workers has run out. He worries not just about this year but next year too.
