Sara cody says the public should do their part to help avoid a potential surge. The earlier that we act the safer we will keep everyone. Dr. David kessler, dr. Robert rodriguez and dr. Eric gooseby bring a wide range of experience to this team. Their work here for the past seven months will highlight the bay areas success responding to the pandemic. The Biden Administration making a strong first step to building a National Strategy to fight the pandemic. Appointing a 13member covid19 Advisory Board comprised of Public Health experts across the country. Theres so much good work happening at state and local levels across the country, governors, mayors, theyre stepping up. The Advisory Board will listen and learn lessons from their experience. Reporter the experience coming from the bay area, including ucsf david kessler, dr. Robert rodriguez and eric goosby. Bob wachter has worked with each of them personally. The three people that have been chosen bring very different lenses to the pandemic. Theyre all remarkable leader. Reporter dr. Kessler is a leader in academia. The former dean of ucsf served as fda commissioner under president george h. W. Bush and was repinted by president bill clinton. He understands the way the fda works. The way the federal regulatory process works. Reporter dr. Rodriguez is an emergency medicine professor at ucsf school of medicine. Hes currently working in the e. R. Department and icu of two Major Trauma Centers including Zuckerberg San Francisco general hospital. Hes also written about the Mental Health of caregivers of doctors and nurses and others on the front lines of covid. Reporter abc 7 spoke to him in july when he was volunteering at a hospital in his hometown, brownsville, texas. Were trying everything, but these patients are extremely, extremely sick. Reporter dr. Eric goosby is internationally recognized as an Infectious Disease expert and his prominent role fighting hiv and aids under the clinton administrations. He has been the u. S. Aids coordinator. The Latino Community foundation already wrote an open letter to the governor urging him to choose a latino. Congresswoman Jackie Speier tells us thats a likely scenario. Theres been lots of speculation that the governor will appoint one of the statewide officeholders, particularly a latino member, who would then join the senate and be one of the few latinos in the senate. I am chinese american and also an immigrant. That really brings a different level of understanding. Reporter the other fled central america. I was born and raised in el salvador and my family came to San Francisco when i was 12 during the civil war, escaping the war. Reporter in 2021 theyll both enter city hall. She will be the first latino in 25 years to hold the San Francisco board of supervisors seat. I am just so grateful that my neighbors have entrusted me with this position and i cant wait to serve them. Reporter both women worked in local politics for decades. But always behind the scenes. As aides and policy managers. Next year their policies will be front and center. I will be focused on housing and child care. Thats really important to families. And also on senior services. When were talking about progressive policies, what specifically are we referring to . I think that those are the policies that really thinking about when we provide city services. We really want to put on an equity landscape reporter they were both inspired by other women of color to run. A movement theyre saying is growing. More women of color are running for office. Why do you think that is . I think there is a change, you know, in the air in the possibilities of women, people of color. Dozens of berkeley children returned to inperson learning in Public School today. Those kids will go to School Every Day from 9 00 to 2 30, but as abc 7 News Reporter Amy Hollyfield shows us, that is where the normalcy ends. All right. Reporter there they go. The first children in berkeley to return to inperson learning in Public School. In the classroom they will be spaced apart, Wearing Masks and in very small groups. It feels really good to have kids coming back to school, evens if we only have two cohorts of eight right now because were trying to be very, very cautious about how we go about it. Reporter this is at rosa parks elementary, one of three campuses partially opening today. District wide a total of 72 kids returned. These students are the students who really need extra support accessing Distance Learning. And there may be different situations at home where there isnt the supervision thats needed or access to technology. Reporter relieved parents told stories of Distance Learning difficulties at home. Hes been really struggling to stay focused. Because hes been doing a lot of his Distance Learning by himself. And to have access to youtube any time he wants is really a temptation thats really hard to resist. Im a single parent, so he would stay with my brother, and its i couldnt support him as much as other parents that one stays and the other one goes to work. So it was pretty hard. Reporter protesters were also part of this first day. A caucus of activists within the Teachers Union held signs warning of the dangers of covid. So it doesnt matter how many temperature checks you do. That the virus is still going to spread. And we just think its unacceptable to be forcing specialed and english language len learners, some of our most vulnerable students, back to school during a pandemic. Reporter the protests made some parents feel uneasy. They said they dont feel forced to inperson learning. The possibility that there are adults opposed to them coming back to school is a confusing message and i dont think achieves much. He could have stayed home, but we wanted him to see how this was going to play out. He was just excited to just see everybody. Yeah.
