KGO Good Morning America July 11, 2024

Dark winter warning. President elect joe biden charging ahead, promising bold action against the pandemic. We can save tens of thousands of lives if everyone would just wear a mask. Urging americans to do their part with 71 days until hes sworn in. President trump refusing to concede and overnight, attorney general william barr adds fuel to the president s false claims by giving Prosecutors Authority to investigate claims of voter fraud. The race to stock up. As americans brace for the next covid wave, the grocery chains already limiting purchases and the items in high demand right now. Emotional tribute. Jeopardys touching farewell to alex trebek and the new details about his final days spent with his family as his fans turn their grief into action. And double trouble in the ballroom. The dancing competition tougher than ever from that bachelorette boost to that backstreet boot. Were hearing from the eliminated couple only on gma. And we do say good morning, america. We appreciate you starting your Tuesday Morning with us and, again, a lot of news to get to. We do, starting with the coronavirus crisis. New details on that promising vaccine trial coming as cases surge soaring in every state now, 10 million total with more than 59,000 hospitalized, the highest since late july. More than 118,000 new u. S. Cases reported on monday. The sixth consecutive day weve been above the 100,000 mark. Matt gutman begins our coverage in hardhit el paso, texas. Good morning, matt. Reporter good morning, michael. Just how hard hit el paso is. The covid rate here has soared by over 1,000 . Every hospital in the county is at or over capacity. To deal with the increase in deaths, the state has shipped in ten morgue trucks. This morning, the u. S. Surpassing a staggering 10 million covid19 infections. The highest number reported cases in any nation. In the past week, roughly 74 americans were diagnosed every minute. And every state is reporting an increase in cases, mayor bill de blasio with a stern warning to new york city residents. So we have one last chance to stop a second wave. Reporter that second wave already crashing over some parts of the country. In el paso, texas, hospitals are so full the state shipped in med surge tents and in recent days, county officials have added a tenth mobile morgue to help keep up with the climbing death rate. Youve got saturated hospitals. Youve got a potential of ten morgues in your community. The trajectory does not look good at all and that to me is extremely scary. Reporter for some help could be on the way with the fda authorizing use of another antibody treatment administered to patients with milder cases. In utah, overcrowding in intensive care units forcing the governor there to declare a new state of emergency. I am placing the entire state of utah under a mask mandate until further notice. Reporter in indiana, where hospitalizations are spiking also, state officials calling for retired Health Care Workers to help with staffing. And when we spoke to the county judge overnight, he called this a perfect storm we have covid, were entering flu season and people are about to gather for the thanksgiving holiday and while the antibody treatment and the vaccine are major breakthroughs, theres concern from Infectious Disease experts that they wont arrive quickly enough to have a Significant Impact on this second wave. Robin. That is much of the concern, matt. There are new details on the pfizer vaccine. The results of the trial promising but there could be challenges getting the treatment out to the public. Steve osunsami joins us now from atlanta with more on that for us. Good morning, steve. Reporter good morning to you, robin. Pfizer says it has a stockpile of this medicine ready to go as soon as the government says its okay. In the race this morning to help heal the world, Drugmaker Pfizer and a german partner appear to be leading, saying that the early results show that their new Coronavirus Vaccine could be as good as 90 effective. Financial markets around the world went soaring after the good word. As a vaccine, its more than 90 effective which is extraordinary and will play a major role in what the outcome of this is going to be. Reporter pfizer is now planning to ask for fda emergency use authorization of this new medicine as soon as next week for First Responders like doctors and nurses and for atrisk groups like seniors and pfizer says at first theres only enough medicine for 25 Million People worldwide. Dr. Anthony fauci says that people getting the first shots could get them by december. Moving the drug across the world wont be easy. The vaccine is two doses, three weeks apart, and it has to be stored well below freezing, a huge challenge for shipping companies and local pharmacies. Your cvss, your walgreens do have solutions in place to schedule. Its not going to help if just the big box chains are the only ones who have this technology. Reporter pfizer set up 350 large freezers to store millions of doses of the vaccine. Once the government gives the okay, the company says that chartered flights will rush vaccines across the u. S. Within three days for those early groups, possibly at the height of shipping season for the holidays. Dr. Victoria smith is one of the heroes who helped us get here and she agreed to join the human trials and said she is happy to help bring an end to the pandemic. As an africanamerican female, knowing that this disease was affecting africanamericans and people of color disproportionately, i also wanted to be part of the race to a cure, not so much a cure, but something that could help prevent covid19. Reporter there are many people this morning questioning why pfizer couldnt have shared this welcome news before the election. The drugmaker says that it only saw these early results a few days ago. They underlined that they dont accept government funding for their research because theyre trying to keep the politics out of their science. George . Okay, steve, thanks. Lets bring back dr. Ashish jha. Good morning, dr. Jha. Thanks for coming back again this morning. Lets start with the vaccine. 90 effective, if it holds up, is a very powerful result. Yeah, good morning, george. Thanks for having me on. Absolutely, better than i was expecting. I thought we would get to 60 or 70 , if we got lucky. 90 would be really terrific. Would make a big difference. How long if this holds up will it take before we see widespread distribution . Yeah, you know, even under the best of circumstances, i think january, february is when were going to get highrisk people getting vaccinated and majority of americans probably march through may or june. So were still many months away from most of us being able to get vaccinated. So really prevention for the next bad season. Meantime, what do you make of this new antibody treatment thats been approved by the fda . I think its great. I think its two thoughts. First of all, again, it looks like if you give it to people early it has the potential to make a big difference. The problem, george, is we only have tens of thousands of doses of this and 100,000 people are getting infected every day. I wish we had invested in the same way that we did on vaccines on making millions of doses of this medicine. We just didnt do that over the summer as we should have. You just mentioned that figure, 100,000 people getting infected every day. I was startled to see you believe the actual number could be multiples higher than that. Yeah, i think its undoubtedly the case. Because our testing is so inadequate, and were missing so many people my best excuse me my best guess is between 300,000 and 400,000 americans are getting infected. Its much more worse than it appears. Thats a very sobering number, which means hospitalizations and deaths will increase as well. Theres no doubt about it. In my mind between now and inauguration day, unless we take bold action, were likely to see an additional 100,000 americans dying. Thats awful. I think we can prevent it, but weve got to take more aggressive action now. You said bold. We saw president elect biden call on people, time and time again, to wear a mask. What more needs to be done right now . Yes, so masks are absolutely essential. I think Congress Needs to get money to states and states need to expand testing so we can start identifying people instead of missing them. Those are two critical things i think are really important right now and everybody should be pulling in the same direction. Dr. Jha, thanks for coming back with us again this morning. Thank you, george. Michael . All right, george. As you said president elect biden is charging ahead promising a bold, new strategy to fight the virus but warning of a dark winter. Mary bruce has the latest, good morning, mary. Reporter good morning, michael. While the president elect is eager to show that hes ready to roll up his sleeves and navigate this crisis, he is urging americans to put their political differences aside and come together to tackle this common enemy and beat this pandemic. As the u. S. Passes 10 million covid cases, joe biden is welcoming the vaccine breakthrough but warning theres still more work to be done. The challenge before us right now is still immense and growing. Theres a need for bold action to fight this pandemic. Were still facing a very dark winter. Reporter after the president spent months downplaying masks, biden is now trying to reset the conversation. I want to be very clear. The goal of mask wearing is not to make your life less comfortable. Its to give Something Back to all of us, a normal life. Reporter urging americans to come together and do their part. We can save tens of thousands of lives if everyone would just wear a mask for the next few months. Not democrat or republican lives, american lives. Reporter with 71 days until hes sworn in, biden is forging ahead announcing his own Coronavirus Task force and being briefed. Dr. Anthony fauci who sits on President Trumps task force praising the group as admired colleagues. The nations top Infectious Disease expert says he plans to stay on the job too. I have no intention of leaving. Ive been doing it under six president s. Its an important job and my goal is to serve the american public, no matter what the administration is. Reporter the White House Monday with its own Coronavirus Briefing led by Vice President mike pence. Their first meeting in nearly three weeks. This morning, the Trump Administration is yet again the center of a covid outbreak. Housing secretary ben carson, a doctor and member of the president s covid panel, and david bossie who is leading the president s election legal team, among at least nine people in trumps circle to be diagnosed in recent days. The president himself largely out of sight since bidens victory speech, still refusing to concede. But biden is already looking ahead to the hard challenge of uniting the country. We can get this virus under control, i promise you. We can rebuild our economy back better than it was before. We can address racebased disparities that damage our country. Its in our power. So lets wear a mask. Lets get to work. Reporter now, while the biden team is pushing ahead, there are very real hurdles to this transition if the Trump Administration refuses to acknowledge that biden is the winner. The General Services administration has to officially recognize that biden won in order to free up Critical Resources for this transition like funding, access to classified information and secured facilities. The biden team is urging them to act swiftly and warning, if they dont, they may take legal action. George . Okay, mary, thanks. That isnt happening because President Trump is refusing to accept the Election Results, repeating false claims as his campaign files lawsuits challenging ballot counts with scant evidence, and his attorney general versus longstanding policy to authorize investigations into the election before the results are certified. That has prompted a protest resignation by the senior in charge of the investigation. Terry moran has the latest. Good morning, terry. Reporter good morning, george. Attorney general william barr has previously been accused of playing politics with the Justice Department to please President Trump and now, as you say, he has taken the extraordinary step breaking with longstanding government policy to give politically appointed federal prosecutors the power to launch probes into the 2020 election. This morning, attorney general william barr is giving federal prosecutors the green light to investigate Election Fraud allegations and fueling President Trumps conspiracy theories. Memo to all u. S. Attorneys barr authorizes them to look into any clear and apparently credible allegations of irregularities that, if true, could potentially impact the outcome of a federal election in an individual state. That breaks with longstanding Justice Department policy to delay any such investigations until after states certify elections. A Justice Department officials claims the attorney general is acting on his own, without direction from the president. But the move comes as the Trump Campaign continues to push baseless claims that the election was somehow rigged against him. Even though federal and state judges have thrown out multiple lawsuits citing a lack of evidence. Barr also admits in that memo nothing here should be taken as any indication that the department has concluded that voting irregularities have impacted the outcome of any election. As the president refuses to concede, the president s legal team vowing to see their challenges to the elections outcome through to the bitter end. We are very close to the automatic recount statute in pennsylvania. Reporter and President Trump is now getting a boost from Republican Leadership. President trump is 100 within his rights to look into allegations of irregularities and weigh his legal options. Reporter in another sign trump wont go quietly he abruptly fired his defense secretary via tweet writing, mark esper has been terminated. I would like to thank him for his service. Esper on the outs with the president after he defied him over the summer saying he would refuse to deploy the military to crack down on protesters. And he now insists he was no yesman as for telling the military times, whos pushed back more than anybody . Name another cabinet secretary thats pushed back. Have you seen me on a stage saying under the Exceptional Leadership of blah, blah, blah, we have blah, blah, blah, blah . Back to the Justice Department and the attorney generals memo. It sent shock waves through the department, and within hours richard pilger, whos the top federal election crimes prosecutor resigned in pros test. George . Terry, we have to underscore how extraordinary this is. Theres no widespread evidence of voter fraud. No prospect the Election Results are going to be overturned, yet the president continues to sow doubt aided by the attorney general and the entire Republican Leadership at least in the senate. Reporter thats right. Every time they have brought allegations of fraud into courts, federal and state courts in nevada, arizona, michigan and pennsylvania, theyve lost. Theyre 0 for 10 right now because the judges have said theres no evidence, george. And terry, the Supreme Court is going to take up that challenge to the Affordable Care act today. Reporter thats right. This is the big one, george, the health care of millions of americans, people with preexisting conditions, their guaranteed access to health care all on the line. This all stems from an effort by President Trump and the Republican Party to bring down the law in its entirety, asking the court to strike down the law altogether after the republicans passed a law that zeroed out, that zeroed out the tax the individual mandate penalty. All eyes on Justice Amy Coney barrett but the betting is the court wont go as far as the president and the party want them to. A major election issue. Terry, thanks very much. Robin . Now big game for the new England Patriots last night. Comeback. Quarterback cam newton powering his team to a 3027 win against the struggling new york jets. I mean, twice in the game the pats were down by 10. And then in the final minute, cam newton got them in position, 51yard field goal at the buzzer, so to speak, and they snap their losing streak after four straight losses. What say you, Michael Strahan . What says me is were talking about new england snapping a losing streak and the jets have not won a game all year. Come on, jets. Jets. Where is our gary our stagehand . Dont do that to gary. Ill save gary. Were following a lot of other headlines this morning including new concerns about college kids, covid and thanksgiving. You saw the scenes at notre dame. A student would rushed the field is speaking out from quarantine after his friend tested positive. Well tell you what to do if your child is heading home. And alex trebeks legacy, jeopardy, paying tribute to its beloved host. Well hear how fans all around the world are honoring him. But first, lets go to ginger. Good morning, ginger. Good morning, michael. Eta nearly stationary just northwest of cuba. But i want to show you what it did in florida, south florida has had nearly 100 inches of rain so far this year. It could be end up being one of miamis we
