Dr. Coal fox expects San Francisco could move to purple by then. A curfew would have to be implemented within 48 hours of that announcement. By the look of the citys latest case counts, we technically already qualify to be in that category. The third surge, there is no question. Its not a matter of if it will happen. It is happening. A stern warning from dr. Coal f colfax as covid is surging. What is really important is that curve, that steep slope of increasing cases. The 14day average of cases increased 152 since november 1st. Thats one of the highest spikes in the bay area. To put it in perspective, 217 new covid cases were reported in mid october. Nearly a month later, that number is 768. This rate of increase is higher than we experienced during our summer surge. On monday, San Francisco was safely in the red zone but todays data indicates the citys cases per capita is far past the threshold to be in purple. A surge that could overwhelm hospitals across the city that are already reporting limited icu space. Health care system is bracing for an influx of patients over the next one to two weeks. The medical director of ucsfs Emergency Department expects the next surge of hospitalizations will be more severe cases. You know, in the second week of their illness is when we know people tend to either start Getting Better or might get more sick. As the infection gets a little worse or pneumonia develops, those patients may end up in the e. R. Again and a good number of those will be hospitalized. The Field Hospital can accommodate 99 patients to help with the surge. Dr. Colfax expects the city could have hundreds of people in the hospital by late december, early january to help avoid reaching that point, the message to stay home, avoid travel and limit gatherings couldnt be more clear. The choices we, you, i make in the next two weeks will determine the trajectory of this holiday season. Now, dr. Colfax also pointed out the city may also be closing indoor gyms, museums, movie theaters and worship facilities as well as limiting capacity at retail outlets if cases do not improve. Just another reminder why keeping those gatherings to immediate family and limiting travel is so crucial as we head into the holidays. Stephanie sierra, abc 7 news. Now, speaking of the holidays, we know the state has indicated gatherings should be no more than three households. Did dr. Colfax weigh in . He said those gatherings should be immediate family or people within your bubble should not exceed more than six people. Not excehe overall message froms people have become complacent and we certainly see that reflected in the numbers. All right. Stephanie sierra reporting. Dr. Sarah cody is sounding the alarm about a surge in santa clara county. The city is seeing an increase in the number of people getting infected and hospitalizations. If things dont change, the south bay could have a crisis in its hands in weeks. We are indeed at a critical juncture at this pandemic and the choices that each of us make in the next two weeks may mean the difference between enough Hospital Capacity to care for all of us and our families and friends and not enough. Santa clara county reported 407 covid cases today. That is its highest single day total since march. Covid cases in burkely are soaring, as well with much of the sudden spike attributed to a major covid outbreak among work ers at Golden Gate Fields racetrack, which is currently shut down. Leslie brinkly spoke to Community Leaders who sadly are not surprised. More than 100 racetrack workers at golden gate field along the bay tested positive for covid leading the track to issue a statement saying theyre suspending all live racing through the end of november. Management says all facilities have undergone a thorough cleaning as they work with the Berkeley Public Health department to get things under control. The vast stable area just south of the track is home to over 1,000 horses and 400 people according to the Multi Cultural Institute in berkeley. Groomers and trainers live in crowded conditions there and theyre not surprised to learn the outbreak is centered among them. Theyre the caretakers to the horses. They live above the stables. You can sort of see them when youre driving past on the freeway, but as i mentioned, theyre very vulnerable population that isnt really taking advantage or has access to the Services Provided by similar organizations like ourselves or the city of berkeley. Outside the gates to the stable area, this announcement at lunchtime. It is of extreme importance everybody follow social distancing guidelines. The jockeys gail told me that none of the 25 jockeys at the track have tested positive thus far for covid but they are, they said, very concerned about the closure. Because no races equal no income. No formal statement from berkeley officials on the spike in cases or Contact Tracing efforts. No one yet knows where the finish line is. Im leslie brinkley, abc 7 news.
