Biden will start receiving National Security briefio be in information from the white houses covid19 task force. Weve been telling you covid19 cases are surging ahead of the holidays. We know a lot of you are feeling the covid fatigue. Yourp growing joining us now this morning is dr. Richard besser former cdc acting director and with abc for a long time. Dr. Besser, great to see you. Thanksgiving coming up real quick. Weve been told over and over again not to gather with groups outside of our home. However we just saw that 3 Million People traveled by air over the weekend to get some place. So, whautt is the lastminute advice you would give to these families . Its a challenging time. Everyone is absolutely sick of this pandemic and thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays. If your plans arent set, if people havent taken off to come to your house, i still urge you to follow cdcs advice and not have the big thanksgiving gathering this year. We normally have 20 to 30 people at our house. This year we have three coming. My wife, me and one son who was able to get tested. But my parents who live two miles from us, theyre both 90, were going to deliver them some food, but were not getting together. Its just too risky. When i see the news aboutthe vaccines tha are coming it gives me excitement and also gives me fear because im just seeing too many people who think that this is over and we can just stop doing all of these things that are so important to preventing spread. This winter is the most dangerous period of this pandemic and we have to double down. And dr. Besser you mentioned that vaccine and weve been talking about it so much lately. We can expect to see three vaccines at this point and Health Care Workers prioritized when it comes to getting it. What do you think is a realistic timeline everyone else can get it . Kumasi, i think in all likelihood it will be late spring, early summer. But still a lot of things in play. None of these vaccines have been approved yet by fda. Some of them are really challenging in terms of what is required to distiburibute them. And far more vaccines than we currently see by the time the late winter comes along. There are a number of other vaccines in trial being studied and that gives me great hope. But until we have widespread vaccination and wearing masks, washing hands, social distancing, those are the things that are going to save lives and we need congress to step up and put money in peoples pockets and keep people from getting evicted this winter. Right now in california varying restrictions and currently a lot of the bay area has a nightly curfew in Los Angeles County they are implementing starting tomorrow no Outdoor Dining whatsoever. Do you think that we jump the gun a little bit knowing that we are going to see increased cases around the holidays by reopening some of these places like gyms and indoor restaurants only to have to shut them down again . You know, i dont know that we jump the gun but i thinkhave idea that these are things that you dial up and you dial down. Based on what is going on locally. So, you know, when things are good, you can allow people to do more. When things are not so good, you can put in place restrictions. But they need to be based on science. And clearly indoor dining, congregating in bars and those are risky activities. Being outside in a park is not a risky activity. You know, when i hear some places are shutting down parksk open for indoor dining. When i see places that get children into schools successfully learning and shutting down schools doesnt make a lot of sense to me. We have to prepare people and explain why things are taking place. And one of the challenges is that we havent been able to hear from cdc every day during this to explain the Public Health measures. I know you mentioned how important it is for congress and the federal government to step in and help people. What do you think are the best ways that they can do that and why is that so vital for us kind of overcoming this. Well, kumasi, when you look at how this pandemic has played out. It hits every community but not every community equally. Black, latino, native americans being hit the hardest. We need congress to step up, put money in peoples pockts and put back in place eviction protection, mortgage foreclosure protection and sick leave, expand Unemployment Insurance and the snap program. These are things that are going to save lives. There are tens of millions of people at risk of eviction. You mentioned something about the cdc a moment ago and, obviously, you have a direct experience with that agency although not in this particular administration. So, given that, we didnt see this very specific advice from the cdc about not traveling for thanksgiving until very late last week. And even getting that advice was surprising given the sort of lack of information we received from the cdc. Do you think at this point, they have turned the corner and are now going to at least for the rest of this administration be more clear with americans . You know, i would love to see that. But until we see cdc out front at the podium on a daily basis talking to the public through the media, i dont think things will really have changed. You know, for guidance like thanksgiving to appear on the web, but not be discussed in a press conference wont have, it doesnt have the same impact, especially when our political leaders are not pushing those same messages as hard as cdc is. Dr. Besser, thank you so much for taking time to chat with us this morning. We appreciate it. Its a pleasure. Happy thanksgiving to all of you. Happy thanksgiving. And to you. All right. 5 20, checking in with mike. Yeah, great job, guys. Appreciate that. Lets take a look at whats going on from the east bay hills camera. You can see maybe a little haze hanging out there but for the most part the fog stuck around napa and American Canyon right now. About 53 degrees. Well use this as the back abou conditions today. Slightly milder and couple degrees warmer than yesterday. Scattered and light showers and then drizzle as this storm moves from north to south. Hate to call it a storm, a cold front moves from north to south during the overnight hours. Once it passes, well have some cold mornings this weekend and some mild afternoons and more dry weather. Heres a look at todays temperatures. 68 the warm spot and that is fairfield followed by santa rosa at 67 and concord and you can see low to mid 60s around the bay and in about 58 to 63 along the coast. You can see a nice, green blob right there and that is some of the shower activity and late drizzle and temperatures milder than this morning. Most of us in the 40s. Heres a look at area of High Pressure that has been dominating our forecast an
