Counties across the bay area are looking around trying to secure freezer space wherever they can find it as they wait for vaccine shipments. Counties are doing what they can to find them now that the governor announced the state will be receiving the Pfizer Vaccine in a couple weeks. Alameda countys website said theyre still in the protest of purchasing freezers and dry ice for the vaccine. In Santa Clara County theyre still in the gathering of pro social security. In terms of the number of freezers, i dont have an exact number. Before coming to the press conference i was on the phone with a group who said freezers arrived on a truck as of yesterday. Dominican University Says they will offer freezers, and in novato, the Buck Institute for research on aging is rushing to clear out their freezers to make space for vaccine storage. The private sector is looking for cold storage. Sutter health says they invested 100,0 100,000 on 14 freezers. This is necessary because that vaccine is required to be stored at negative 70 degrees. This grim assessment is forcing administrators to scramble to make sure theres enough beds in hospitals serving East San Jose and parts of the county in the south. Fewer than a dozen icu beds are available in those areas now. Hospitals throughout the county are working together, engaging in phone calls at least daily to redistribute patients as needed to ensure were continuing to provide safe and high quality care. The impact on hospitals was one reason Santa Clara County implemented several new restrictions on monday including a travel quarantine. Sonoma countys Top Health Official says her county is doing better than many other counties when it comes to the rate of new infections but the coming weeks may test their ability to cope with the growing number of hospitalizations. We continue to do better than much of the rest of the state at slowing the spread of the virus, which is advantageous as we entering the most challenging phase of the pandemic. Sonoma county is expected to stay in purple, the most restrictive tier. The countys Public Health officer credits testing in communities hit hardest by the virus as key to limiting the spread. San mateo county is cracking down on businesses now that the county is in the purple tier. Many can stay open as long as they follow Certain Health orders. A Compliance Team has been handing out warnings, now theyre moving to the citation phase for any business not complying. The message were sending to everyone right now is this is the time to be extremely careful to really be vigilant and make sure you comply with all the regulations and requirements to operate businesses. The county manager says the most frequent complaints are not enforcing social distancing and not requiring masks. Marin county is worried that visitors could impact their covid19 trend. Marin county is the only bay area county not in the purple tier. Sausalito is always a popular spot for visitors. Some coming from more severely infected areas. The county Health Officials looking at the numbers say the purple tier for them is not a matter of if but when. Democratic leaders are backing a bipartisan compromise on a covid19 relief bill. President elect joe biden is signaling that he supports it, even if its just a start. It would include 300 a week in federal Unemployment Benefits. It would also include 160 billion in state and local aid, something republicans had been rejecting. It would not include another round of stimulus checks for all americans. President trump has not commented on the compromise. Happening today, President Trump will award the medal of freedom to College Football coach lou holtz. Reporter a nurse on the covid floor at John Muir Medical Center is on the front lines of the fight to save those so sick they need to be hospitalized. It also means being there when the battle is lost. So weve had to deal with that quite a few times. Its heartbreaking to just be around other human beings, especially in their last moments of life and not hold their hand or look at them in the eye. Reporter despite a surge in overall cases, so far most major hospitals in the bay area including john muir are weathering the storm. We have been, you know, preparing ongoing for the last ten months. So we have absolutely known there would be another surge headed our way. At this point its manageable. Reporter sutter, ucsf, stanford and kaiser all report they, too, have adequate capacity. Right now theyre not canceling most elective surgeries. Still preparations are under way if things get worse. At john muir, that includes this temporary waiting room outside the emergency entrance. Despite the seriousness of the covid situation, this hospital and others want to remind people do not delay seeking care and dont be afraid to come in for other potentially life threatening medical issues. We have been working at this for ten months. We are absolutely ready to keep everyone safe. Reporter devery told us he and his colleagues are ready to treat more Covid Patients but hoping for fewer.
