I was the last one off the dock when the firestorm came through the tree and took everything with it. I just ran to the beach. I helped everybody i could along the way. The coast guard rescuing at least a dozen people from the waters. As part of the emergency proclamation the acting governor is asking all visitors to maui to leave as soon it is safe to do so and discouraging all nonessential air travel and all affected state agencies have been ordered to assist with evacuations. In los angeles concerned passengers choosing to get off their flight heading tomorrow heading to maui. Hawaiis National Guard has activated to assist. The u. S. Armys 23 Infantry Division plans to send helicopters to help with Fire Suppression just as soon the winds died down enough. Larry lets get the latest Spencer Christian tracking the conditions firefighters on maui are dealing with. What these people to understand is you would think an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean surrounded by water you could not possibly be impacted by a drought but this has been going on for years and that fueled of this lays. Field displays. Spencer there Drought Conditions across the entire region. As you mention it is tropical. We think about moisture. Here is the satellite image. Here is maui. In this area you have lahaina rate there. A lot of the white is smoke. Lets take a look at the broader picture. The local forecasters in the National Weather service in maui talked about the circulation, the outer circulation around powerful category three Hurricane Dora f. Combined with circulation to the highpressure seven to the north has been a factor as it generated powerful wind gusts. Or is moving rapidly away from the island. It is losing its influence. There is another lowpressure system, a smaller storm to the south of the islands that could generate moderate gusts. Nothing like the 70 to 80 mileperhour winds we have seen so far. As you pointed out Drought Conditions prevail over much of the Hawaiian Islands especially in maui. The areas in yellow and orange indicate moderate drought. It is quite dry. Kristen the massive wildfires are moving so quick the people have little time to evacuate. Larry this is something in california we are used to because the fire starts, the wind starts blowing, the flames are about to swallow up an entire neighborhood. Karina nova, you spoke to a couple of people fortunate to get out. I spoke to two people here they are locals. They were able to escape. Both have homes in lahaina. They are coming to the realization their homes are going. The video we are seeing is hard to take in with so much devastation. This is video of the smoke over the harbor right there off of front street. And we can also see the fire from this boat looking at the smoke and flames taking over lahaina. This street might look familiar to you. This is at front and dickinson. I spoke to the woman who shot this incredible video while evacuating lahaina. Marjorie sinclair tells me the roads were closed and traffic is jammed. It is like lahaina is on fire. Karina she took a risk and drove on a street with flames on both sides. They were like tender boxes and i could not believe. I tried to get out one by going on the street by the First Hawaiian bank. It is like my god the First Hawaiian bank is on fire. Oh no. I dont know. Rome is burning you know. Kind of a deal. I have not had an experience like that before. Karina sinclair moved to maui from San Francisco a few years ago. She is hopeful her two cats survived because she could not them into crates and a time when she evacuated. This video of smoke near the heine was taken by bryce before he and his family evacuated last night from their house. They drove 40 miles away to stay with other family where they are trying to get updates. I dont even know where to start. I have so many friends that both their home and their jobs in lahaina and it has been burnt to the ground. It is like where do you begin to pick up after this you where is our whole Community Get to pick up after this . What do we even rebuild . How do we start . Karina there are some images coming in from lahaina that shows the devastation of a town visitors know well. Again, it is home to so many people. And a long time. They were in place where they had phone service. They both told me they would look to be able to escape. They are a few of the of hundreds of families who are displaced with no home. Any of these people dont have jobs. As both of you know from traveling as i know that is a place where a lot of people work. Kristen that is a huge tourist center. The shops and restaurants. All those jobs not going to be there for a while. Larry the economy is going to be devastated. From a personal perspective a lot of people know that i grew up on the islands. My best friend lived in lahaina. Spent so many days there. I want to see a picture of the banyan tree. It is one of the most famous landmarks on front street. A bunch of my friends have told me it is gone. Until i see it im going to hold on. I played on the banyan tree when i was a kid. My kids played on the banyan tree. It was planted in 1873. It is 150 years old. We can rebuild the waterfront with more fire retardant materials because a lot of the shops were wooden when this kind of thing happens they are going to go up. You are not replacing a and entry that has a banyan tree. Kristen so many of us have pictures. Karina so many of us have pictures. I was there on my honeymoon. You are thinking this is gone . I was just there a few months ago. Kristen there are 70 people in the bay area who feel that special connection. Karina a special home a second home or place they visited with family. Larry it happened so fast. Some people saying i could see the flames and it seemed like it was far away and a minute later it was on top of my house. That is what happens when these fire systems create their own weather patterns in the area. Everyone is taking their pictures there. Karina they have the storm that came through the hurricane that provided the winds that helped light the flames and spread the flames i should say. That is what they were telling me. It was so windy you could see the flames. Kristen we hope marjorie finds her cats. Karina two cats who she said were her kids. Larry we have seen this 70 times and in the north bay and now it is happening on maui. The impacts from those fires can be felt in the bay area by former residents of the islands. Dustin dorsey spoke with people worried about family and friends. Dustin devastating damage from wildfires are not uncommon for bay area natives. Images sausalito residents are seeing of their former home valley. Tough to comprehend everything going on right now. Dustin things they would never believe would happen to the Beautiful Island. I lost my home to fire in the past. It is close to home for people losing everything because my family lost everything. It is hard to watch all of our brothers and sisters on the island go through this after watching year after year everyone go through it in the bay area. Get an contact with friends and family with power out and sell service either limited or nonexistent. They told us their second home north of lahaina could end up in a evacuation zone. Other friends houses have been destroyed by flames. It is a hard thing to think about. Front street a place that i always held close to me as a kid. And all of west maui to think that a lot of it if not all of it is ravaged by the fires and will need to be rebuilt. It would be like if all of sausalito burned down. It is a unique historic beautiful place a replaceable and that is what is. Dustin eric is a board member with the Hawaii Chamber of commerce in northern california. He says using the former capital and landmarks like the venue tree are irreplaceable. He hopes given the strong ties to the Pacific Island culture the bay area will step in to help residents in need and rebuild the Beautiful Island of maui. Our organization will be coordinating and monitoring whatever support we can provide. The spirit is always there. The community is there. That is the most important. I think between my friends and my family no one can put into words the loss of life and what it represents and what it is. Kristen lahaina was the capital of the way in kingdom starting in 02. And served as the center of the line government for more than 50 years. The center of town was declared a National Historic landmark district in 1962. There are a total of 62 historical sites in the district. Dont know how many were damaged by the fire pit the giant banyan tree was planted in 1873 in the center of town. It is massive covering an entire block standing 60 feet tall making it the largest in the u. S. I think there is a Community Center right behind it. I think there is a chinese landmark in church not far away. That whole area. So much history. Larry we attended a wedding there not too long ago. Im really glad we are showing the Historical Perspective because it is a lot more than just a tourist town. The question is it safe to travel to maui right now. Thousands of tourists are stranded on maui. That Hawaii Department of transportation urging visitors to leave and people not to travel there but leaving is not that easy right now. Amanda del castillo you spoke with passengers at san jose airport. The bay area area Hawaiian Airlines passengers say theyre monitoring the fires movement to china and kids are on maui note should she had plans to land later today. I want to see them. I want them home. Just trying to figure out what the best thing to do is if i fly in to wahoo and take a shuttle over or wait to hear from them. There is no cell service. I have not been able to get in touch with them. Night and since conditions have only grown worse impacting nearly all communication. Others who plan to fly out of sjc expressed frustration to jessica and her husband had direct flights to maui for a nineday trip here they have since been diverted. The residence both admit they may be desensitized to the news of the fires devastation. We have the car fire a few years ago. We could see the flames from our driveway. And so we know all about how that works and evacuations and stuff like that. From what i have seen so far this morning it looks pretty bad but not nearly compared to what we are used to. Nothing from the airline. Nothing from anywhere. Nothing about what was going on during we had no idea until we got here to check in our bags to get on the flight. But for others with personal ties to the islands there is concern. She says her inlaws live on maui in an area already under evacuation. The weather changes so quickly we have expensed other things in the past weather is a huge emergency and then it is nothing. I think that is what they were going off of. Kristen senator feinstein is resting at home today following a fall that sent her to the hospital. The 90yearold tripped over a piece of furniture at her San Francisco home yesterday. Her office iued a statement saying the senator was taken to the hospital as a precaution. All of her scans were clear and she returned home. She has battled a series of Health Issues this past year. We spoke with abc news political director rick klein on our program getting answers. There have been concerns about her ability to do the job. Her Mental Fitness as well as her physical signet physical fitness. She was out of the senate for months with a case of shingles that was more serious than had been disclosed. When she talks with supporters at all on capitol hill or anywhere else she sometimes seemed disoriented, seems confused about the details of her medical condition. The flame spread to a Hardware Store and a shed behind that. Nobody hurt thankfully. The red cross is helping those people who were displaced. A busy San Francisco intersection expected to reopen tomorrow more than a week after a massive fire. The intersection of oak street and octavia boulevard has been closed since the fire. Our media partner the sf standard reports the city yesterday ordered the owners to secure the property so the street can be reopened. The two unions involved say regardless of what happens the strike is still starting tuesday. Sac fuentes has been tracking the progress. We are together. Jesse perez works for the city of san jose and is president of the ifp t local 21. That union represents 4500 city workers at places like the airport, city libraries and housing department. Dozens of whom spoke out at a city council meeting. Plans were made for the two unions to resume talks with the city. When they closed sessions we were alerted the council Gave Authority to the city first of are the wednesday negotiations. The plan threeday strike will still start tuesday. That is because the two unions have come together and a coalition. Local 21 will wait to see how talks go. We are united. That is first and foremost. Both unions say their demands for higher wages and better working conditions are reasonable and necessary. Give us a fair compensation to be able to live in the community. Costofliving of living is very expensive. That goes without saying. The other thing is to retain the talent here. The demands include paid parental leave the city offers one week. It is something many workers spoke out about at Tuesdays City Council meeting. Both of my pregnancy i was in the hospital for more than 40 hours so to offer 40 hours is crazy. I was young when hired and opted out of shortterm disability so had to burn my pto and sick time. The minimum would be eight weeks. That would be fair. The city has offered a 5 raise next year followed by four and 3 in the years after. Cutting Core Services like Library Hours and police and fire staff.
