The conditions improve. That is, people could start to leave tomorrow, weather permitting. This gives you a better idea of where everyone is stranded. There in the Black Rock Desert north of reno. Most people cant get a cell phone signal making it a challenge to communicate. We begin our coverage tonight with abc seven News Reporter cornell bernard. We had planned on leaving yesterday, but you know, it seems thats not thats not the plan. Matt schuster from San Francisco is patiently waiting for the weather to change in black rock city, home to burning man. So right now, how some some, you know, its a light shower. Its schusters 19th year attending the counterculture arts festival. And this year, torrential rain has stranded tens of thousands of burners. Its made the desert floor better known as the playa. A muddy mess. Its really not a good decision to try to drive. Organizers say driver out, even walking out is not advised. It is clay. Its even worse than than mud. So. So it fills in all the grooves of your tires and you literally have no tread. You know, to leave. The mud is so thick. Sculptures of mud, people are being made burning man attendees have been told to shelter in place and conserve fuel, food and water. They shut the water down. Im Walking Around helping pull power cables out of the ground so they dont get stuck in the mud. And all were doing is kitchen and drinking water. Thats it. Authorities shut down the entrance to the campgrounds for the remainder of the event, which ends monday. We might not be leaving here until thursday because it takes usually a two to full days for the playa to dry off. Matt schuster is willing to wait as long as it takes, he says. For now, theres a Community Spirit with people helping one another. So were here and were, you know, were were were hanging out with our friends and were were still having a good time in San Francisco. Cornell, bernard, abc7 news. Beautiful rainbow there. Organizers decided to close off the festival to vehicles after one death was reported. Investigators have not released any details on the person who that person may be, but did say the death happened during the quote, heavy rain event. Some people are making it out tonight so soha zaidi, that is of San Francisco shared this video with me. She got to reno and stopped at an innout. But one look at her boots and some of the people in that restaurant gives you an idea of the situation. Everyone was in there absolutely covered in mud. She thought about staying but was running low on supplies. She does tell me that while their rv was stuck in the mud for six hours at one point they are burners and would go back in a heartbeat. We are live for happy eve all the mud, sunday services went on at burning man, the playa choir did perform this morning. The video is a little blurry, but we do have a couple of photos as well from the performance. Even in the rainy, wet conditions. Us now to abc7 News Reporter stephanie sierra early this morning she talked with jamila foster about her experience in black rock city. Heres a portion of their conversation from early sunday. Um, its been very wet and very muddy, but weve also been having a really good time. Um, were all helping each other out a lot, making sure we all have food and water and, you know, tightening our, our tarps around our tents and or moving into someone elses tent whos offered if our tents are wet. My tent just started to leak a little last night, but not too bad. And i have a camp mate who has already said, youre welcome to move in here. If you need to. You know, um. Uh really just kind of staying present and taking care of ourselves as much as we can while also being a really good time. Weve heard from burning man organizers. Theres no estimate on when the roads will be dry enough to allow vehicles to leave safely. Are people anxious to get out . Im sure that there are some people that are anxious, but when you come out here, you kind of come out with an idea that you really dont know what to expect. Thats part of what i think brings a lot of us out here and while its obviously not convene, its also kind of what we signed up for. And i think theres also a very, um, theres a large awareness amongst a lot of us that, you know, when you have to walk through a new obstacle or an experience, you often come out on the other side with some wonderful new lesson or just feeling stronger in life in general. So i think were all kind of keeping that mentality about us because we know that after all of this is over, were still going to probably look back on it as one of our favorite experiences ever. Burning man has a lengthy history with roots here in the bay area. It started nearly 40 years ago, june 1986, as a small ritual on baker beach in San Francisco with just 20 guests. They burned an eight foot tall effigy, the burning man. The event launched a celebration of community art, selfexpression and selfreliance. Five years later, 1991, it was moved to its current location, black rock city in northwest nevada. It still drew a relatively small crowd of just 250 people. By the year 2000. The crowd had grown to more than 25,000 campers and the burning man had grown to more than 50ft tall. In 2014, on 105 foot tall, effigy was burned, the tallest ever for that years event drew nearly 66,000 campers. Tragedy struck in 2017, though. A 41 year old man threw himself into the flames of the burning monument. But he died a day later. From there, the size of the burn monument got smaller each year, but the crowd size did not peaking at more than 79,000 guests in 2019, the inperson event was canceled in 2020, due to the pandemic, but about half a Million People took part in a burn week online. Certainly lots of history there. Well, we are keeping an eye on the weather between tahoe and the situation up in the Black Rock Desert where people are literally stuck in the mud. Spencer christian here to join us with our 24 hour accuweather forecast. All right, j. R. Im happy to report that the rain and thunderstorm threat in that area has just about ended. Take a look at our thunderstorm threat graphic here. Now, earlier in the evening, this green and yellow indicating the marginal to slight thunderstorm threat was right over northwestern nevada, right here in this area where, of course, Black Rock Desert is located. But you can see the rain has moved out of the area. Now theres still a muddy mess left behind, but at least the threat of more rain is gone. And let me move back a little bit and show you the larger image of the radar and satellite combined. You can see that weve got this flow of air moving from west to east, pushing all the storms over into utah right now and into southern idaho. But things are improving weather wise, at least at black rock city. Ill have our local forecast coming up in just a few minutes. J. R. Spencer, thank you so much. A warning tonight as the number of bears being killed by vehicles in tahoe continues to soar. The number climbing to nearly 30 in just seven weeks. And as abc seven News Reporter Tara Campbell reports, its the staggering count is turning into a call to action. Its literally been carnage and its only escalating. And bryant is the executive director of the bear league, a nonprofit working to protect the tahoe regions beloved bears. Were just, you know, holding our breath, thinking, how can it get any worse . But then it does. A few weeks ago, we reported about 20 bears being struck and killed by vehicles within just a five week period. Since i talked to you, weve had several more bears that have been hit uh killed, injured. She says 15 more bears have been hit. Eight killed. The others injured. In this video, you can see bear cubs limping along. We have cubs that are injured and their mother is trying to take care of them. Weve got a mother thats badly injured and shes got two cubs that are fine. We cant even find her anymore. All this capturing the attention of the city of South Lake Tahoe. The city putting up these flashing warning signs ahead of the long weekend. It was discussed having signs as youre entering tahoe, kind of the gateway of the city, notifying visitors about wildlife in areas and to take it slow. They decided they wanted signage and asked us what our preference be, the lit up signs or just the little triangular signs that say bear crossing so well, i think the lit up signs call more attention to it and she says people have been responding to these signs. We had a lot of comments from people on that and we told them South Lake Tahoe city, we did this and were so proud of them. And the city is also planning to put up more permanent signs, identify best locations. Whats interesting about the city of South Lake Tahoe is you have the highway that goes through town. So we have to work with caltrans as well. And also the county for parts of pioneer trail. In the meantime, bryant is bracing for whats to come as the bears begin foraging for food ahead of hibernation. It escalates when we get into september and october, the first part of november. And so this is the time when it gets worse. Tara campbell, abc seven news. In the east bay today was the second day of the annual ardenwood rail fair in fremont. And you can see our shops complex and some equipment on display there. Theres also food, music. You hear that music there. Activities, if you want to go check it out. The fair continues tomorrow at the ardenwood rail museum. Im joined right now by Spencer Christian. That looks like a good time. It looks like a lot of fun. And tomorrow will be a good day for it. Oh, nice. Yeah i forget. You know, were in this Holiday Weekend right now. Exactly right. Well, the labor day weekend, as you know, got off to sort of a dreary gray start yesterday. Cooler than average, a little bit more sunshine today, even more tomorrow. Heres a look at live doppler seven. Weve got a quiet late night around the bay area right now. You see a few little spots, green dots popping up, indicating some moisture, maybe some spotty drizzle, mainly over the higher terrain. But basically weve got a quiet and dry evening and we even have light wind winds at the surface here. So nothing more than about 15, 16mph. It is a bit cooler at this hour than tonight than at this time last night. Weve seen we see 2 to 4 degrees cooler in most locations. So lets move along and take a live view on this evening from mount sham at this hour of the night, notice how clear the view is. We see a few low clouds developing, but they havent really formed very much of a marine layer yet. Its 61 degrees in San Francisco. We have mid 60s at oakland mountain view, san jose, 62 at palo alto and Half Moon Bay 63. Nice view in emeryville as well. Off in the distance we see some low thin clouds, but once again the marine layer has not yet fully developed. 60 degrees right now at santa rosa, low 60s at novato, napa and fairfield. And we have mid 60s at concord and livermore and from our exploratorium camera right across the street from abc7 across the embarcadero looking at the well, we just we saw the moon just a few minutes ago. Its out of view right now and its light was reflecting off the bay waters which was a nice view, but this one isnt too bad either. These are our forecast headlines. Low clouds at the coast and bay plus a little patchy drizzle will develop overnight, mainly sunny and mild. Tomorrow, labor day and we can expect gradual warming through the week ahead. Now for tonight, during the overnight hours, look for increasing low clouds and a little bit deeper marine layer than we have right now. Some patchy drizzle will develop near the coast and bay and some i started to see morning commuters but they may not be many commuters tomorrow morning, but Early Morning drivers may encounter some damp spots on the roadways. But certainly by midday and going into the afternoon or evening hours, we will see mainly sunny skies on this labor day. Overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s. And then tomorrows highs will range from low and mid 60s at the coast to mid 70s right around the bay shoreline up in the north bay. Well see some upper 70s to mid 80s over the inland east bay, only mid 80s, so cooler than average, but certainly milder or warmer than this weekend has been. Its going to be a lovely labor day tomorrow. Heres a look at the accuweather 70 forecast. Notice weve got a string of not only sunny days coming our way, but itll be getting gradually warmer as we get into midweek. Each day or every two days well see the temperatures rise about a degree or two until we reach the normal range for this time of the year, which will be around saturday when well see 90 degrees inland. Then next sunday, even warmer. Still with mid 90s inland low 80s around the bay shoreline. But you know , its nice to have that kind of gradual warm up as opposed to the sudden sharp bumps up in temperatures, you know . Yeah. In nevada, you know, theyre dealing with all that mud. But here its just so comfortable, especially after that hot weather that we had. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. This time the temperatures may be rising, but not sharply and not into an area where its going to be so hot and uncomfortable. Ill take that. Any day of the week. Yeah. Thank you so much, spencer. Okay. Still ahead on abc seven news at 11. A Little Something for everyone. Well take you to a meatless Food Festival that took over berkeley this weekend by treating it with linzess. Then you could start proactively manag
