The marine corps. They have their cannons out there showing demonstrations, guns. Theres a lot. Brendan beasley appreciates about fleet week, seeing the blue angels perform, seeing the sailors on the street and visiting the ships. I want to see where my tax dollars are being spent and its pretty cool. You know, these people are working hard. So where we are right now, this is our quarterdeck on board the ship. Visitors get to experience it all. 000 demonstrations is talking to men and women in uniform. Young Jonathan Lindquist even got to try out some gear for those with the uss john p. Murtha grateful for the visitors and the support we have a little under 400 sailors in about 220 marines on there right now. It really recharges their batteries when they get to go out and just hear those little words like, hey, thank you for your service. So were standing on the flight deck of the uss john murtha and the aircraft behind me is the mh 53. This aircraft here is one of our heavy lift helicopters. Yes yeah well we look up we got a heat advisory and hopefully some blue skies. We do have a heat advisory. I want to start with that right now. Let me give you a look. This is in effect for the city of San Francisco and for much of the peninsula down to the Santa Cruz Mountains, the Santa Clara Valley, and across the bay around the east bay shoreline. This is from 11 a. M. Tomorrow to 11 p. M. Friday. High temperatures up to 102 degrees in the hottest locations, above average temperatures, obviously everywhere. And theres a moderate to major risk of heat related illness, especially for people either working outside or participating in outdoor activities. Now, the surface wind is calm right now, but its a little bit windier gustier in the hills. And with these winds flowing offshore now, the winds sloping downhill. The air is drying out and its warming up, heating up, i should say. And thats part of the reason we have this 24 hour temperature change. This is very impressive. 17 degrees warmer in napa, right now than at this time yesterday. 16 degrees warmer here in San Francisco, 11 degrees warmer at Half Moon Bay. Our coastal areas, many of them reached 80 degrees today. Heres a view from the mount tam camera looking down onto the bay. It is 86 degrees here in the city right now. Oakland 80, 86. Also in mountain view, 91, san jose, palo alto, 88, 72 at Half Moon Bay at the golden gate. Skies are clear and traffic is moving smoothly and its getting warm up north. Or its been warm for a while now. 93 degrees right now at santa rosa, napa, 94, 90 at novato, fairfield, 92, 88 at concord and 87 at livermore. And looking across the embarcadere from our rooftop camera, lets take a look at the forecast headlines. Clear skies overnight. No cooling coastal clouds around for a while. Itll be warm to hot. From the coast to inland through saturday and we have heightened fire concerns, obviously, under these conditions and near record high temperatures are likely in some places, especially away from the inland areas. The inland record highs are almost unachievable right now, but around the bay and on the coast, we may see some records overnight. Therell be no clouds, no cooling, coastal clouds. Itll be relatively mild to uncomfortably warm overnight with low temperatures in the low to mid 60s in most bay area locations, highs tomorrow low 80s at the coast, low to mid 90s around the bay shoreline mid to upper 90s inland and that pattern will continue into friday when it might even be hotter in some inland spots and into saturday and on sunday. Finally we get a sharp drop in temperatures and some cooling relief. But until then we have to sweat it out. Heres the accuweather seven day forecast. So again on sunday, a breezier breezy and cooler by a lot as a matter of fact and the cooling will continue on monday which is columbus day and then early next week, early to midweek well get back into maybe even a little bit below average temperature range. Certainly a comfortable change compared with what were going to see in the next few days. But the good news, if youre a blue angels fan, is that the skies will be clear. Well have great viewing conditions here in the city and all around the bay area for that, for that matter. Its going to be fantastic. It looks gorgeous. Yeah, amazing. Especially because last year i think they had to cancel the last day due to weather and stuff. So a little bit of a little bit of fog last year. Yeah, great. Not this year. Let it stay away. Yeah all right. Thanks, spencer. Celebration today marking a major milestone in Water Conservation in the south bay. It all comes after mccarthy made history yesterday, becoming the first speaker to be ousted from his leadership role by members of his own party. Eight far right republicans who are unhappy about mccarthys short term deal with democrats to keep the government funded voted to remove him. I dont regret standing up for choosing governance over grievance. I do not regret negotiating. Our government is designed to find compromise. Mccarthy has announced he will not run again for speaker. His ouster leaves congress in something of a state of chaos right now and facing a midnovember deadline to pass a funding deal. Or once again risk a government shutdown. Earlier today, we spoke with lonnie chen about the current status of the republican party. Chen was the 2022 republican nominee for california state comptroller. He says many in his party are furious with mccarthy being voted out and adds that the main problem facing the gop is that all new orders of business, including averting a government shutdown, are now placed on hold. The house cannot conduct business. The house, in essence, cannot do essentially any kind of legislative business until a new speaker is selected. San francisco is now making it easier to get people off the streets and into housing. People will be able to get shelter without having to present proper documentation. Abc seven News Reporter ryan curry spoke with the citys Homeless Department about this change. San francisco is removing a barrier that made it difficult for some on the streets to access shelter. The Citys Department of homelessness and Supportive Housing says people can now get a temporary place to stay without documentation. Often this is a real opportunity for us to move people directly off of the street and into housing. Unhoused residents seeking shelter through the department once needed to show a drivers license or Social Security card. The Department Says oftentimes those experiencing homelessness couldnt provide those documents. What we knew was that there were a lot of people on the street who had been determined to need housing based on their vulnerability, but that the system we were using wasnt effective in getting those folks into housing. This started as a Pilot Program back in june, and so far, the Department Says it helped 19 people without documentation. Those people were then given 90 days to get the identification needed to continue receiving aid, and the department will help them. They say the goal is to get vulnerable communities, the resources they need to get off the streets and stay off the streets. Were also focused on sustainable city and really making sure that people who we who we select for this and are working with for this are surrounded with the support they need so that they can actually maintain their housing. The city says about 350 units are available right now, but officials are prioritizing aid to People Living on sidewalks instead of campers or rvs. Essentially, this was the natural next step in what we call presumptive eligibility. Yep theyre uploading videos toiktok accounts that feature barbies and other kinds of dolls doing everything from modeling clothing to acting out famous movie scenes. Oh, role playing . Yeah. Experts say people crave an outlet to express themselves. And these videos scratch that itch. All right. I think we should remove those barriers anyways, right . These are for adults. These things are for kids. But do you guys engage in anybody in anything thats typically associated with children . Well, you know, we do. My wife, angela, every year does a huge range for the family and a few friends. Easter egg hunt. Yeah, we do that. And you know what, kids . And its for adults. Adults love to play. And so its all adults doing it. So i would say thats the one thing we certainly do. Abc7 News Reporter luis pena sat down with supervisor noelia corzo to hear how she hopes to open the doors for other latinos. Some mateo county was formed in 1856. This is one of californias oldest counties. By the late 1940s, San Mateo County was no longer a rural suburb of the city of San Francisco, but was instead a thriving industry. Full commercial and Residential Community of its own. 167 years later, a latina walked through these doors and made history here. Her name noelia corzo. And im county supervisor for San Mateo County. Noelia corzo. When was the last time there was a latina supervisor here . Never. Never. Im the first in the history of San Mateo County. We met up with noelia in the place of shaped her childhood. So this is your neighborhood . Yes. This is where you grew up. This neighborhood is the North Central neighborhood. And it is were at the king center, which is the Community Center that i grew up going to, where i learned how to swim and where i spent a lot of my time. So when you see it now, what do you see . I see my home. I see the community that that raised me. As the daughter of working class immigrants from guatemala , this community embraced her and witnessed some of the hardest moments of her life, decades before she even dreamt of becoming a government official. If you ask seven year old me, i would have said i wanted to be a veterinarian. And, you know, as when i was a teenager, i actually couldnt even think about my future because i went through something really, really devast stating. And that was the loss of my brother. My brother lost his battle with depression when i was 16 years old, and he was 22. I was a junior in high school and when that happened, you know, because my mom didnt speak english very well and because she was is absolutely devastated, i had to step up. I was 16 and i had to plan my brothers funeral. I had to make some really adult decisions. Hers later, her brother would become the motivation behind making Mental Health one of the pillars of her campaign. Her son and her mom. Some of her main inspiration to run. I was thinking about my mom, especially my mom. My mom raised me mostly as a single mom and you know, she to this day cleans houses. And she was a nanny. And being a mom, actually has informed a lot of what i do. I want my son to be happy and to have all of the opportunities that that he deserves and some that i didnt have. So what happened that you said i need to run for supervisor . What happened was covid i was president of the school board in 2020 during covid. I was a bilingual nonprofit, social worker. So working with with, you know, mostly monolingual Spanish Speaking families, all i saw was people suffering everywhere i looked. And i recognized how much power the county had to really help people during that time. Noelia corzo attributes her win to her Campaign Efforts focused on the latino and asian communities, the ones she said many had forgotten because financially she was also an underdog, raising close to 110,000 for her campaign. Her opponents raised three times that amount. How does it feel to walk here knowing that you can make a difference . Yes, it feels empowering. And also like a big responsibility that i take very seriously. What do you sit. Ill show you. I sit right here. You also have a little situation here. Whats going on . I do. Im only five feet tall, so i need a foot rest during my long meetings. Why do you think it took over 100 years to elect a latina in the board of supervisors . I think its kind of like a selffulfilling prophecy, right . You dont see people, especially women of color and higher elected office. And then you think its not possible. We belong in every single space where important decisions are made and if you dont have a chair, you bring one. In San Mateo County, luz pena, abc seven news. And thats it for abc seven news at four. Abc seven news at five is next. Im quite harmless, really.
