The Health Care WorkersUnion President says acting us labor secretary julie hsu will also be on hand. Shes already spoken to both sides, but some labor experts say theyre concerned that once the Biden Administration gets involved, that could be an advantage for kaiser. Yes, the president supports the strikers collective bargaining work. The union of Health Care Workers president dave reagan telling striking workers that President Biden is backing their cause. They want 10,000 new employees to be hired. In an email to abc seven news on tuesday. Kaiser claims the demand to hire 10,000 employees has been met. They say theyve filled 10,000 positions. If youre really careful, most of that is people who are doing internal transfers. Theyve not gotten there. Theyre parsing words. Its just not true. Do we want contract . What do we want it now . Reagan announced on friday to employees at kaiser walnut creek that acting us secretary of labor julie su is now getting involved. I think shes already begun to get involved and is playing a valuable role and i believe shell be willing to continue to be involved and help us get to an agreement when the government steps in, theyre stepping in effectively on the side of the employer. Professor robert, a union member himself, says the Us Department of labor is involvement may force kaiser back to the bargaining table. But he adds, when the government gets involved, it often forces workers to concede some of their demands. My concern here is that if they step in and pressure the union not to strike a second time, that they may not achieve their main demand. Still, reagan is optimistic that the end is in sight. Its not that its too complicated. Theres too many points of disagreement. It really is. This needs to be done. Lets do the right thing. We think we can have it done next week. Now, reagan says if negotiations fail next week, they are preparing for an even longer strike that will begin in november. Alma, and answer you spoke to the Union President and have been speaking to members of the Bargaining Team all week. How confident are they that can end this strike next week. Yeah. So a lot of the employees that i spoke with who are on the Bargaining Team say they are pretty confident. And i want to start by saying we did reach out to kaiser. They did not return requests for comment. So we dont know their position. But as you heard the president saying, the Union President saying theres not a lot left on the negotiating tables. These discussions began back in april, but the negotiations really didnt kick off until this week. And now with the department of labor on hand, they may have the places, the pieces in place to broker a deal. So well see what happens come next week. All right.
