Saw you need to open it up again. Just you could use it for something. They left the tour boat and walked across the embarcadero to this parking lot. They thought their luggage would be safe in the rental car, but they joined the 15,357 other people who have had their cars broken into so far this year in San Francisco, they lost cash. A 1,200 ipad and a 3,500 laptop. The police left a note telling the couple to come to central station. They had recovered their luggage, but they basically told us that you know, is there a chance for us getting our computers back and they said, no, youre your computer will probably end up in either vietnam or another asian country. That happened on a friday, just three days later. The ipad pinged this location in vietnam, 80,836 miles away. And that laptop containing lindas work as a photographer was long gone. I thought i was going to hyperbole. He was probably the strong one in this case because i, i, you know, i mean, it was just devastating for me. Police say they caught the man responsible for the olliges break in. 26 year old robert sansa of San Francisco. Now, the criminal complaint alleges on that day, september 1st, he broke into the couples rental car. Another rental car, and a San FranciscoPolice Department bait car. They may be breaking into cars that are put out there by the San FranciscoPolice Department. The police chief announced the new bait car campaign the week before sansas arrest. I was there in Court Last Week when he pled not guilty and set a trial date. And ive been researching sansas Court Records in several counties over the past five years. Sansa has been arrested more than a dozen times. He has convictions for car burglary, grand theft, hit and run shop lifting and more. He was on probation at the time. Hes accused of breaking into the alissas rental car. Robert sansa has also been accused of evading arrest on several occasions, trying to drive away but slamming into cars, causing injuries and putting anyone on those streets in danger. On february 2nd of last year, Police Responded to the japantown garage for a report of an auto burglary. Officers tried to detain sansa as the suspect, but he fled, got in his car, ran over an officers foot and hit a parked car less than three months later, Court Records show the police tried to arrest him in north beach. He was driving a stolen vehicle reportedly used in multiple car break ins. That day. The police was sort of trapped him. This is a one way street. He they trapped him down there. Neighbors watched hassans a hit. The two patrol cars drove onto the sidewalk and took out this staircase. And suddenly the whole house starts shaking and my wife starts yelling. Someone just hit your vespa. His vespa was destroyed. He had to replace it. The complaint says sansa hit another patrol car a block away, injuring an officer, sideswiped another house. He made it to columbus and broadway, where he hit a civilians car, injuring them. He left the car and ran into chinatown, where officers finally arrested him. At first, prosecutors charged sansa with several counts of assault upon a peace officer with a deadly weapon, hit and run, evading an officer with willful disregard and a misdemeanor possession of burglar tools in a plea deal, all the charges got dismissed except for a single count of evading an officer. I am out. There is no way a person doing all of that damage charge should be let off with just evading sansa got out with time served in that case a little over six months in jail, the Police Union President tells me deals like the one sansa got do little to prevent future crimes. Why is it that we continue to give guess breaks and passes to people who just really are just showing they do not want to do the right thing at that same News Conference announcing the baker campaign, district attorney, Brooke Jenkins promised to prosecute car break ins more aggressively. Thats what we are trying to reinstill in San Francisco right now, is that not only will you be caught, but when you are prosecute ated, there will be a consequence for that behavior. Thats a start for dan and linda. Olgas. Does it mean anything at all that the police were able to catch your guy with their bait car . It worked. I mean, theyre theyre Law Enforcement technique worked it does. But then, you know, lets see what happens to this guy because, you know, it wasnt his first rodeo. You know, its a professional job. What are they going to do, slap them on the wrist and let them out . And a couple months. Robertsons goes public defender declined to discuss his current case or the previous ones. His trial is set for november 17th, and ill be there to follow up. Dan, im on again. Its happening dozens of times a day in this. Exactly right. Frustrating. Yeah. Thanks, jim. Lets move now to the latest on the escalating conflict in the middle east, with israel appearing to be getting ready for a ground offensive. Israel formed a war cabinet today in what could be a sign this is going to be a lengthy war with hamas. Israel reports more than 1200 people have died since fighting started on saturday. Thats the most since the 1973 war with egypt and syria. Gaza Officials Say at least 1100 have died in israeli airstrikes. Israel claims 1500 hamas militants were killed inside israeli territory and hundreds more in gaza. Rock hits, meanwhile, continue to fly. Abc News Reporter matt gutman got caught in the middle of one of the attacks in southern israel. Those are interceptors taking out the hamas rockets. We think this has been going on all day long. Explosion after explosion. So many people in this town have just left ■military aid for israel is arriving from the united states. The California National guard announced today one of its engineering battalions is heading to the middle east. And the war in israel has people concerned about rising racial tensions outside of the middle east. Abcs seven News Reporter anzar hasan spoke with some bay area experts about their concerns. On tuesday evening. A rally in walnut creek turned tense as a small Group Calling for the end of the Israeli Occupation of gaza angered those rallying in solidarity with israel. Rising tensions locally in the aftermath of the hamas attack on israel over the weekend and the bombardment of the gaza strip that has followed has even local lawmakers concerned over possible targeted attacks in our community. We must make sure that jewish communities who have been subjected to antisemitism are protected by local Law Enforcement and federal resources that we have. And we also must make sure that Muslim Americans are not unfairly targeted. Hamas does not speak for the muslim community. Bay area congressman Eric Swalwell met with local muslim and jewish leaders on tuesday, alarmed by the rise in hate crimes since just this past weekend, weve seen right now highest levels of antisemitism that weve ever had in this nation. Globally, 1000 antisemitic incidents occurred just over the weekend in the uk, three times increase in france. Mark levine, who is with the antidefamation league, says oftentimes after an attack in israel, theres an uptick in antisemitism. We have seen an uptick in increase of hate speech and actual harm to the jewish californians and jews globally. Whenever there is an attack by hamas on israel, Muslim Americans are also dealing with the rise in hate crimes and harassment. The council on American Islamic relations has pointed to vandalism of Islamic Centers and harassment of Muslim Students across the country. We certainly dont want to confuse that for muslims as well. Muslim americans had nothing to do with what occurred by hamas in the east bay. Ansar hassan, abc seven news, social media has played a key role in how many people are getting information, how many people are getting information about whats happening in the middle east. And there are Major Concerns over misinformation being spread on social media platforms. Abcs seven News Reporter zach fuentes is live in the newsroom with what to look for online. Zach, a lot of the concern has been centered around false information shared on x, formerly known as twitter. But nearly all platforms are coping with misleading or unconfirmed posts. An obvious example was a Fake White House Press release and multiple videos and other posts that went viral. Also turned out to be mischaracterized at one point, even x ceo elon musk recommended that users follow an account thats known for spreading disinformation. He eventually deleted that post, but experts say recent layoffs at x could be playing a role in disinformation and misinformation that are running rampant online. Musk laid off thousands of employees last year, including many who are responsible for detecting and addressing false claims. Now, i got to speak with the san jose state tech expert who says combating these posts requires a layered approach and that the government and social Media Companies should be involved. But we also cant forget our role as users, starting with looking to multiple sources for looking for information. The source has to be something, a source that is trusted, trustworthy. You know, you know a wellknown name that they know that theyre going to be liable. There will be some issues if they start spreading bad news, whether it is, you know, you know, that one about the war in the middle east or somewhere else. Now, again, its not just experts catching heat. Meta Ceo Mark Zuckerberg has been warned by the European Union to have misinformation taken down in a timely manner. But as for x, it does have something called Community Notes that lets users fact check false posts on the platform. But of course by then a false post may have already been seen and shared by the thousands, even millions in some cases. So experts say that its critical to look at multiple sources before coming to that conclusion. An important reminder before you come to that conclusion that a post or video on social media is fact, especially early as ai continues to develop at a rapid rate. Abc seven News Reporter suzanne phan is live in the newsroom with the look at what College Admission experts say needs to change. Suzanne. Im a one Educational Consultant told me hes not surprised that Stanley Young was rejected by 16 top schools. He says the College Admissions process is extremely competitive. But he says there are other options out there to land a tops a spot, rather, at the top college. And in a company like google. Stanley zhang told abc seven news anchor kristen sze he just landed a job at google as a Software Engineer without ever going to college. His path raised a lot of eyebrows and some criticism of the College Admissions program. Your gpa and sat score gpa was 4. 42 weighted sat score was 1590. Allen coe is ceo of cardinal education in families pay his Educational Consultants to help students compete against the other very qualified College Applicants out there. Coe is not surprised that colleges rejected zhangs application. Asian male computer science. The probabilities are darwinian much worse than for any other demographic. Coe says the other possible factor is he came across as too unidimensional for most universal cities. Coe says all the sciences, including engineering, are very competitive programs for many reasons. It is getting much, much more challenging for asians to be accepted into competitive stem programs. Coe says the admissions system needs to change there. Absolutely needs to be reformed. The Playing Field can be leveled by universities being much more transparent about what the standards are at and just advertising it publicly to everybody. And if they were to do that, then you dont need private College Consultants, let alone school counselors, to help students navigate it. We really want to push for transparency. We should be able to, you know, if we get rejected, be able to look at, you know, these are the reasons why, why, and we shouldnt have to just kind of blindly guess in the dark about a black box process. Zhangs case is an unusual one. Education experts say there are options for students to get ahead. Community colleges are a big help. Students should definitely consider California Community colleges, especially their stem major. Why many universities are impacted, meaning that theyre getting a lot more applicants than they have spots to serve. So this is a great way to start. And students have a better probability of getting to their university of choice by coming through the Community Colleges than straight out of high school. And counselors remind students that Community Colleges offer a great deal. They have the lowest tuition in the country. Coe says one third of the undergrads at flagship ucs
