Tonight san pablo voted to end zoom and telephone comments so weve had a handful of Public Comments. But again this is precautionary because of the emergence of zoom bombing. So we dont want to create the platform or these zoom bombing can occur with that hate speech. And again, this is also contingent with your city diverse city policy, where you need to denounce that type of behavior and hate speech by policy. Walnut creek banned zoom Public Comments earlier this year for the same reason. So tonight, abc seven news south bay reporter Lauren Martinez is looking at the new yet old skill being taught again in school to additional handwriting is making a comeback in california schools. On friday, Governor Newsom signed a bill that would require cursive instruction in first through sixth grade handwriting actually activates different parts of the brain that do not get activated when printing block letters or typing. Can you read what this says . Learning how to read and write in cursive is going to be new for students and for some teachers. For 13 years, our Teacher Education programs have said cursive is not part of the standards we have quite a chunk of teachers who have not taught it and who havent needed to teach it, and some who probably were not taught it themselves in english and language arts, private tutor said its important to be open to Different Things for different kids. A lot of the neurodiverse and learning disabled kids ive worked with actually do better with cursive. Um ive read that it has something to do with a different part of the brain that the same part that you use for drawing and those flowing movements can really help the kids. They dont have to be picking up the pencil. Victoria lara is a calligrapher based out of napa and works throughout the bay area. Four years ago, lara turned her passion into a business and started blossom, an ink studio i do in studio and on site events, so ive worked with big brands, local businesses. Lara said. Learning cursive has helped transfer her skill of lettering to engravings and wood burning, having something handwritten is just its a different feeling. Its a very emotion, whole feeling behind it. Lara said her son in high school wasnt taught cursive as much and hes learned the skill more through her calligraphy. Now hes used to it. He definitely takes them a little bit longer to read the note cards or whatever it is, but but he definitely has gotten used to it. Our first takes us to the south bay. Thanks to a new grant from google. Students in san jose will be introduced to the world of robotics and ai. 10 million is going to support Robotics Clubs across the country with 450,000 going to Rec Foundation for california schools. It will offer robotics classes during the school day, plus advanced clubs after school for students to compete across the country. Theres mindsets that are adopted by these students at such a young age that they can or they cant do technology, or they can or they cant do math or they cant, or they cant do science well with robotics. They do it all and they dont even know it. School students got to start these new programs today at adelante two dual language academy. The goal is to build self confidence for them to end up in the field of stem one day and by the way, students in the Robotics Club on campus will use their skills to later compete in a National Competition next year. Our next abc seven building a better bay area breakthrough tonight also has to do with building our future generations where were really going to blend and integrate the best of the Academic Community as well as Government Laboratory like nasa. Nasa and uc berkeley announced the launch of the Berkeley Space Center. The new campus will be designed for research and advancements and will be located on the nasa ames campus in mountain view.
