this could have happened. From a technical point of view. So abc seven news south bay reporter

got inside a cockpit with an aviation expert with just a pull of a lever and a press of a button. Power and fuel can be cut to a planes engine by fire extinguishers. Thats what was allegedly attempted by off duty pilot joe emerson in an embraer 175 cockpit during a flight from everett, washington, to
San Francisco
. A look inside a similar plane could give us a look at how this could have gone down. Im in the captains spot on the boeing 737. Again, a slightly different aircraft,
Hiller Aviation Museum
ceo john welty showed us how things look in this plane. These are the emergency controls for the number one and number two engines, only to be used in case of a fire. What i would do is i would pull this lever up, which is hard to do. Ive got to push the safety button down first so it cant happen by accident. When i pull this up, this disconnects the fuel flow going to the engine. This also disconnects the hydraulics and the electrical power. Turning the lever would start the fire extinguishers and if done for both engines, this would leave the plane with no way to fly. Normally in the embraer 175 cockpit, these fire extinguisher controls are up top within easy access to engage for a pilot sitting in the jump seat of the cockpit right between the two pilots, exactly where emerson was said to be, the flight was full. So all the seats were occupied. But the jump seat was available. And there are a number of
Airline Personnel
who can sit up in the jump seats of the cockpit. That includes off duty pilots, often flying to destinations where they will board a plane. They will pilot themselves. Emerson was scheduled to be on a flight crew in
San Francisco
monday. Thankfully, the control of the aircraft was never lost and the crew was able to divert to portland. The
Mental Health
of emerson has been brought into question and welty says
Airline Pilots
are required to undergo medical exams every six months. A very important part of that examination is reviewing any
Mental Illness
issues, any medications that might affect cognitive functioning, any psychological issues that may have arisen in the six month interval since the last first class medical exam. Questions we may learn answers to in the future. As emerson now faces 83 counts of attempted murder in san carlos. Dustin dawsey, abc seven news. I spoke with abc news aviation analyst john nance during getting answers this afternoon when he put things into perspective about how rare these incidents are and how the crew managed the threat. The captain and the first officer took care of the problem and there were no weapons involved. Thank thanks to our ability with tsa to screen them out. So i think you have to look at it from that point of view. 32 000 flights a day, this sort of thing has never happened except in the last probably 30 years. One time. leslienky has more on a tragedy that is reverberating thro three high schools with a suspect still out on the loose. A house party on this peaceful street in this suburban neighborhood erupted into gunfire for around 1115 saturday night. Basically because we could hear a bunch of noise and some loud screaming, like a fight was kind of going on outside. So i came out and at that point, there was already people running down the street. So scared wasnt shortly after that i heard six shots ring off this neighbor called 911. As chaos ensued, it was at least 100 to 150 kids at the minimum that were running out of here. It could have been 200. It was so many. Their innocents were lost. You could see the terror in their face, in their eyes. So many of them running out of here and having to experience that. Oakleys police chief released a statement saying they found five nine millimeter shell casings in front of the house. A 16 year old died on the front lawn. Three others were injured and taken to

in walnut creek with nonlife threatening injuries. Witnesses described gunshot wounds to arms and legs. Police say officers came to the house based on a noise complaint 30 minutes before the shooting, but left when an 18 year old assured them she would break up the party. But 20 to 30 teenagers showed up a short time later and a fight broke out. The shooter escaped. Most of the students in this neighborhood go to freedom high school, where there was a heavy police presence. Today, parents clustered around the outside doors as rumors circulated and some students left class. They said that there was a rumor that the person from the party was going to come and shoot up the school. And we felt very unsafe being here. And we just wanted to get away. It was great to see this, wasnt it . After yesterdays dreary, gray misty day. So heres a look at whats happening right now on live doppler seven. Weve got clear skies across the entire bay area a little bit of patchy low clouds sliding down along the peninsula coastline. Otherwise, its clear out there, good visibility and its brisk and breezy with surface wind speeds right now up to 20mph here in
San Francisco, 18 at sfo and fairly breezy in other spots as well. And check out the 24 hour temperature change. It is significantly warmer right now than at this time yesterday by 9 to 11 degrees in parts of the north bay and the inland east bay and a few degrees warmer around the peninsula, around the bay, coastal bay shoreline. So what im trying to say, even the coastline is a little bit warmer. Heres a live view from sutro tower looking out over
San Francisco. You see some wispy low clouds moving through. But generally were looking at blue skies over the city right now. Its 63 degrees here in
San Francisco, mid to upper 60s at oakland and mountain view, 77 at san jose, 69 at palo alto and 61 at half moon bay. Blue and breezy at the golden gate. Other temperature readings right now, 76 degrees in santa rosa, petaluma, 70 napa, 73, 80. In fairfield, almost 80 in concord and 76 in livermore. And looking across the breezy embarcadero from our rooftop camera, well check out the forecast headlines mostly clear and slightly cooler overnight than last night was quiet weather pattern will be with us through thursday, but it will be turning cooler late in the week with a chance of showers on friday. So for tonight, the forecast animation looks like this. Well see some passing high clouds, mainly clear skies. And again, a patch or two of low clouds near the parts of the coastline. Not the entire coast, though. And we start the day tomorrow with sunny skies and move along to take a look at overnight low temperatures, mainly low to mid 50s, so a bit cooler than last night was. In fact, it was pretty mild at some spots last night and highs tomorrow, 63 at half moon bay, 69,
San Francisco , so around the bay shoreline, mainly low to mid 70s, upper 70s inland tomorrow although we may see 80 degrees at fairfield and down south at morgan hill. Now skipping ahead, looking at the maximum temperature trend for the remainder of the week, wednesday, well see temperatures dropping off a bit. Itll be breezy and much cooler on wednesday, fairly cool on thursday as well. Friday not much change in the temperature range, although well gain a few clouds on friday and we might have a shower. Heres the accuweather 70 forecast. We expect mainly dry weather through this seven day period and mainly sunny days as a matter of fact. But friday partly cloudy, slight chance. Were talking about maybe a 30 or 40 chance of showers at the moment. Its not looking like its going to be a drencher or just light rain if it materializes at all. Just a little spritz. Little spritz, a spritz refresher, if you will. Partly spritzy spencer thats a weather term i picked up somewhere, had to go to school for that. Trent Williams is out. As long as well as deebo samuel. Hes gonna be out for a couple of weeks with his shoulder. There you see c maxx going through his normal routine when he scored a touchdown in 15 straight games. Going to go for an nfl record, 16 straight game tonight here in minnesota. He spoke saturday after practice and said hes feeling good and ready to go. I feel great for my own standard. I dont know how everyone else feels, but i feel great. Hell of a football player. But what i like to see is theres not a lot of guys who are as hard on themselves as he is. Like, you see him make a mistake. Hes very upset about it and not like emotionally upset. Hes just like, you know, i need to be better than that in my expectations for myself are way too high for that. And then you never see him make the same mistake twice each. Each week is the same, you know, and its always going to come down to execution on on sunday. You know, you can have a great week of practice and not execute on sunday. And you know, average or bad weeks of practices where things might not seem like theyre going well and play really well on sunday. So its all about, you know, theres a lot of time between now and the game about getting in the book under standing exactly what the game plan calls for and going out there and just executing and playing really good football. All right. Back out here live in minnesota. The niners just taking the field for their pregame warm ups in their gear. Spencer Christian is back. Spencer spoke prematurely. The big change . Yes, basically we cloud free conditions here in the bay area right now. Look at live doppler seven, though. Youll see why i said essentially not quite cloud free. We have some low clouds sort of brushing along the peninsula coastline. And other than that, though, its all clear out there and will remain that way for much of the overnight period. Well see a few as you watch the forecast animation, a few high clouds passing by overnight, maybe a little bit of low cloudiness, hugging, part of the coastline there. But thats about it. Not much of a marine layer. So on we go, suddenly start to the day tomorrow after mainly clear skies overnight, overnight, low temperatures will be a bit chillier than last night, mainly low to mid 50s. And tomorrows highs will range from low to mid 60s at the coast to low to mid 70s around the bay shoreline to upper 70s to near 80 inland. And heres the accuweather seven day forecast. Now its going to get breezy and much cooler on wednesday with high temperatures dropping off quite a bit and a mix of clouds and sun on wednesday. Thursday, sunnier and the cooling continues actually into the end of the week when temperatures will be a little bit below average for this time of theear. I think the fan base, we travel well, but you know, going into a place like minnesota, you know, with a great fan base thats going to allow ourselves to be on a big stage, another prime time lights. And so for us, were just going to enjoy it and take it in the first loss of the season. You dont want to have them, but how can this maybe reset you guys . You come off such a high against the cowboys, i guess knocked down a little bit. How do you feel the team is ready to bounce back monday against minnesota . I think were in a great spot. I think honestly, it was almost a good loss in a sense for us just to have that taste in our mouths, that feeling. So be able to go out there and kind of compete even at a higher level. The next time we go out there in a way that can be the best thing, thats happened to us because we really do. It brings you back down to earth where when youre winning, its so easy to just bypass little mistakes and its okay, we won the game, were rolling. Lets not worry about that. That little thing we can address that later. Well, when you lose, thats when it becomes a big thing. And were going to come out of that game knowing all right, theres some things we need to clean up. Thats always good, right . Youre learning. So theyre going to do great tonight. I know it. Were counting on it. Thats it for abc seven news at four. Im kristen sze. And im dan ashley. Our next newscast is at nine monday night football and the 49 ers. Next stay here and enjoy the ball game. Are more enjoyable than others. How we get there, matters.
