We have much more work to do, but this apology most certainly is an important step, and one of the over 100 recommendations made by the African American reparations and advisory committee. The resolution is adopted unanimous. With that move, San Francisco joins a short list of major u. S. Cities and states that have taken the first steps to repair its black residents is a long overdue apology. We know that an apology without action rings hollow. Supervisor Shamann Walton wrote the legislation to create the African AmericanReparations Advisory Committee to develop recommendations for repairing harm done to the black community by the city government. The Group Released a blockbuster report in july of 2023, with more than 100 recommendations ranging from downpayment assistance for home buying, improved access to education to Cash Payments. The first being an apology. We didnt have those opportunities back then. We most certainly were held from those opportunities through policies even today. And so people have a responsibility for righting the wrongs of the past because they still affect us here today. Doctor amos brown, the San Francisco naacp president , was on the Reparations Advisory Committee and also served on california, was first in the nation state Reparations Task force. But we must go beyond just words. We need work. We need concrete measures. The reverend is calling for additional measures from the board of supervisors to go beyond that apology, addressing areas of housing, health and Economic Development for San Franciscos dwindling black population, advocates daetz without much delay measures to correct the wrongs. If we cant do that, then in an apology will ring hollow and it will be, as ive always said, just feel good. Weve already started to work on, on some of the other things in terms of the war on drugs, in terms of addressing the folks who were displaced during redevelopment era era times and trying to look at Cash Payments for them. The push for reparations in San Francisco previously had a bit of a setback as the city, faced with that significant budget deficit, pump the brakes on its plan to spend 4 million to create a reparations office. Developing news with the shopping hub of San Francisco macys is going to close its Flagship Store in union square. This is one of 150 stores around the country that macys is closing. Because it is quote unquote, effective. City Officials Say the San Francisco location will remain open until macys can find a buyer for the building. At least 400 employees are affected by the closure. The union square macys is iconic, and its a draw during the Holiday Season with the traditional Tree Lighting ceremony. The macys windows with all the animals in it. Mayor london breed says the closure has nothing to do with retail crime and that it is strictly business. Weve had even this past Holiday Season between november 20th and the end of the year, weve seen a significant decline in crime, and so we know this has nothing to do with that decision. This is a massive chunk of land that could be used for so many different projects, and those we spoke with today say a development here would benefit not just this community, but the entire city and land is very important to us is its not right for them to refuse to Work Together with us and for them to have the rights to the land. Its a project that could change the look of east oakland, but this group worries fisher will stand in the way. We want the board of supervisors to call on the athletics to stop their interference with events at the coliseum, a place that they claim is no longer viable, but a place that so many people in this community and beyond have come to love. The as are currently negotiating to extend their lease to play games at the coliseum for a few more years, but the longer they stay in oakland, the longer it would take to redevelop the land. That is why this group wants fisher to give up his share. Ryan curry abc seven news jewish organizations in uc berkeley are condemning demonstrators, including pro palestinian activists who violently disrupted an event on campus last night, according to the university, a group of 200 protesters surrounded zellerbach hall, where a former Israeli Defense force member was set to address a student group. The protesters broke doors and windows trying to get into the event. Security worked to hold them back. Those inside said they feared for their safety. Heres a look at the outside of the building today. The event was canceled and the building evacuated. Uc berkeleys Chancellors Office issued a statement saying the incident violated University Rules and fundamental values, including, quote, free speech, diversity of perspective, and the ties that bind this community together. An unhoused man was found sleeping inside a locker room at Lowell High School in San Francisco. Several students and a coach encountered the man inside the girls locker room around 9 00 saturday morning. San Francisco Police say there were no signs of forced entry into the school or any other damage. Police escorted the man out. No one was hurt. The Schools Administration says theyre taking Safety Measures to ensure all exterior doors are locked after school hours. Election day is one week away, and theres a big effort to get people to cast their vote, especially those in marginalized communities. Abc seven News Reporter zach fuentes has more. From policy to candidates, critical decisions are being made in just under a week in the march 5th primary election. I think people forget that we, the community, are the employer because of our elected officials. Still, officials and Community Groups are concerned with low turnout in primary elections. Look at four years ago in our last president ial primary election, where only 52 of our registered voters turned out and cast their ballot. So those 52 of people made the decision, often for 100 of the voters. As of monday in santa clara county, about 89,000 of more than a million registered voters have submitted vote by mail ballots. Local Community Groups are hard at work to increase voter turnout, many of them combining forces to form the together we vote coalition. We bring candidates who may be running people who have policies and other organizations to come and get the community exposed to them because so often communities are not aware of many of these things. Organizations like the Latino Coalition of Silicon Valley have also been part of the efforts, hosting phone banking sessions and social media campaigns to try and reach voters who may not be inclined to turn out. Latinos are, unfortunately, one of the lower margins when it comes to voting. We make up 30 of the population here in san jose, and that, unfortunately, is dwindling as were seeing more and more families pushed out of our communities. The Latino Coalition of Silicon Valley says theyre intentionally targeting other latinas to not just vote, but get the rest of their family and friends to do the same. We are the matriarchs in our household and systemic change really does come down to us. And encouraging our our future generations and our older generations to come out and vote. Carmen bremer says many in black and brown communities get turned off to voting after years of not seeing the issues impacting them addressed. But thats also why she says, its just as important for them to turn out, because when you dont show up, they forget about you and they ignore you, and its critical that you continue to beat on the door because eventually youre going to take your foot and kick it down in san jose.
