About what happened and the serious damage done below. Good evening. Thanks for joining us. Im dan ashley and im ama daetz. The passengers on this United Airlines flight 35 had a long flight ahead of them going to osaka, japan. But just as you saw in that video, within moments they had a sudden change of plans. Yeah, well show you from the air. The plane took off from runway 28, right. Or 28 are earlier today. And as it gained altitude, the tire fell off over the employee parking lot, hitting several cars before bouncing into the neighboring hertz rental car lot. The good news . Thankfully, no one was hurt. But the tires on these boeing seven seven sevens can weigh up to 265 pounds. Their huge tires they are. Lets go out live to abc seven News Reporter j. R. Stone. Hes been at sfo all night hearing more about this scene down below. J. R. Well, ama, at first some of the passengers thought we were joking when we told them what we were covering here at sfo. Then some of those passengers saying, first there was the door incident on Alaska Airlines flight. Then you had a wing incident, then now a tire incident, both on United Airlines flights. There is concern among passengers tonight that this speed and the velocity that it was coming down, it would have crushed somebody like a grape. Eyewitness gary glass is describing this. The tire from a united flight that fell off the plane after taking off at sfo, seen here in this video recorded by carly planes on youtube. Glass was driving near the rental car facility and just 50ft away as you watch the tire hit nearby vehicles, i look up and its a tire spinning at a rapid speed spinning, and it bounced in the staff parking lot and it bounced onto a car at a small white compact car and i thought that it was just going to crush that car and stay there. But it actually bounced again. Really high tire still spinning. And then it landed on a red tesla and completely totaled and crushed the red tesla. Multiple cars were damaged, but no one hurt. Ive never seen anything like that. I was in shock for about 15 20 minutes. The plane that was initially headed to japan rerouted to lax where it landed safely. No one there was hurt, but those in the bay, just a bit taken back after what happened. I knew it was a plane tire right away because theyre huge right . Theyre like the size of an entire wheel, well of a car. But when it hit that tesla, like, i just remember the glass and the metal, the metal crunch and the shadow of the glass was just really loud. Yeah, its certainly good news that no one was hurt in this case. Now, as to how that tire came off, that is under investigation by the faa. United airlines did say in a statement, quote, they will work with customers as well as the owners of the damaged vehicles in sfo to ensure their needs are addressed. Live at sfo, jr stone abc seven news okay jr thank you. What a story. Were bringing you live breaking news updates all afternoon as this story was developing a stay on top of the news where you live with the abc seven news bay area app. And be sure to turn on the push notifications so we can keep you up to date as we watch crews roll off with the wheel of the plane, we wondered how uncommon of a sight this is. Abc news aviation analyst john nance says incidents like this are rare. He explained the situation on our 3 00 pm program getting answers, six tires on each side on the main struts of this 777, boeing seven, seven, seven. And there are times when mechanically something in the interface of the tire and the strut uh interact and it either overheated or something was wrong and broke off. But again, its a very unusual situation. Nance says the loss of a single tire will not have any impact on the ability to land the plane. They are able to drop fuel to lighten the aircrafts balance. But, nance adds pilots will focus even harder to create a soft as soft of a landing as possible. Now, despite some very scary recent high profile incidents, the numbers still show. Flying is by far the safest form of transportation. Plane crashes remain extremely rare. Mit Research Shows about 40 of Airline Passengers have experienced fear at one time or another while flying. However every year about 265 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash driving to the airport than in one midflight. The Research Shows a person is far more likely to die from poisoning on the job, or even by electrocution. Lets move now to tonights state of the Union Address and president bidens chance to appeal directly to voters going into the november election against donald trump. Mr. Biden taking on reproductive rights, Immigration Reform and israels war against hamas. Abc News Reporter perry russom has that, and the republican response. Mr. Speaker, the president of the united states, president biden, on his biggest platform, unveiling his plan to take on some of the biggest issues at home and abroad. The president calling for Immigration Reform as his Border Security bill stalls in the republican controlled house. This bill would save lives and also give me and any new president , new Emergency Authority temporarily shut down the border when the number of migrants at the border is overwhelming. Sitting with the first lady, kate cox, she was denied an abortion in texas under the states strict ban. If you, the american people, send me a congress that supports the right to choose, i promise you i will restore roe v wade as the law of the land again, biden announcing an emergency military mission to build a port in gaza, delivering food, water, medicine and shelter. The leadership of israel. I say this humanitarian assistance cannot be a secondary consideration or a bargaining chip. Protecting and saving innocent lives has to be a priority, a Senior Administration official telling abc news. It will take weeks to plan and execute, and it will be carried out by the us army. Pentagon sources say all work will be done by us troops offshore, and there will be no u. S. Boots on the ground inside gaza, without mentioning former President Trump by name, biden, drawing contrast from his expected opponent in november. My predecessor and some of you here seek to bury the truth about january 6th. I will not do that. This is the moment to speak the truth and to bury the lies. Heres the simple truth you cant love your country only when you win. In alabama, senator katie britt, the youngest republican woman ever elected to the senate, delivering the gop response to the country we know and love, seems to be slipping away, and it feels like the next generation will have fewer opportunities and less freedoms than we did. I worry my own children may not even get a shot at living their american dreams. The president started his speech talking about the war in ukraine, telling congress they have to stand up to russian president vladimir putin, asking lawmakers to pass the bill that would send aid to ukraine, and the president with a direct message to vladimir putin, saying, we will not walk away. Perry russom, abc news, washington. We talked with abc seven news insider phil matier afterward. He called this one of the most political state of the Union Addresses he has ever heard. The content was appeared to be something that you would hear, possibly from a candidate at a convention kicking off the campaign. And thats what i think we saw tonight. He these are the issues he wants to run on Immigration Reform by his package that the republicans havent passed womens rights, which is going to be on the ballot on key states, pharmacy, big pharma, reducing things for the middle class, things for the working class. As far as what lies ahead for the president after tonight, phil says while he may have delivered with the speech, he has a lot of work to do. It is a tough road for incumbents right now, whether youre mayor of San Francisco or president of the united states, it is a tough time. People do not feel good about whats going on around them and how theyre being hit economically. And you can say that youve created jobs and done all of those things. He is yet to connect, and he has to connect with democrats first and then move from there. And this was the first step in that, yes, he was powerful. At least his lungs were. He stayed on script next week. Something else could happen. A speech is a speech only as good as it goes on. And we are less than eight months away from the general election. Helping people safe bears formed out of concerns that there werent enough measures or resources to keep students safe. You know, sometimes cal students, its easy for them to assume that the risks they face every day in berkeley are just part of normal life, but its not. Starting this week, six safety ambassadors wearing bright Yellow Jackets will patrol different areas, either on foot or by bike. From 630 in the evening to 3 a. M. Every night. They all have california guard cards, which means theyve undergone criminal background checks with the California Department of justice as well as the fbi. They are not carrying any kind of defensive gear. They dont carry pepper spray or batons or handcuffs. The safety ambassadors dont step foot on University Campus property, just on public roads and sidewalks around the university, where students live and study. Kind of have to fight for the things you want, like the people do protest. People Like Campaign for the things they want. So i think its like really good that theyre doing that. The safety ambassadors role is to provide a physical deterrence to any threats against students. For now, this will be a Pilot Program that will run until the end of the month. Im a parent of three, and this is a great start. Fully believe that the administration cares about student safety, but we just dont see enough urgency on their part to actually get it done. House lawmakers announced the bill, and today, the legislation easily made it out of the house energy and Commerce Committee unopposed, tiktok sent out pop up messages urging people to speak up to prevent a shutdown, and users responded by flooding congressional offices with phone calls. Pressure campaigns on that tiktok put in place today, where they forced a pop up on the app and also told a lie that we were we were forcing an outright ban, which this bill is not, proves the danger. They sort of prove the entire point. The bill calls for the Chinese Company bytedance limited to divest tiktok and other applications. The academy has made a real concerted effort to broaden its s uh membership. The membership is divided into branches, one for each craft of filmmaking.
