News investigators took computers, hard drives and documents the fbi didnt say why they are searching the prison, but this site has been the center of an Ongoing Investigation of sexual misconduct. It doesnt surprise me, given what weve heard from people in dublin for the last like few months and even years, as the fbi says theyre conducting court authorized Law Enforcement activity, but they wouldnt share many more details. Other than that, the bureau of prisons says theres been a change in leadership. The old warden is gone and a new one is in place. The bureau of prisons releasing a statement saying recent developments have necessitated new executive employees being installed at the institution. We can confirm nt mckinney has been assigned as the interim warden at fci dublin, effective immediately. They referred to it as a rape club. Former congresswoman Jackie Speier says she was looking into the conditions during her last few months of office. She says the prison denied her access to inmates. And i came to the facility. I wanted to speak to certain inmates there because i was told that they had been raped and they resisted letting me meet with them. At least eight employees, including a former warden and chaplain, have been charged with sexually abusing inmates. Five have pled guilty and two were convicted at trial. Emily shapiro with the California Coalition for women prisoners says survivors she spoke with had to endure horrifying conditions like a few times when weve gone in to visit people, after weve left, weve heard everyone that had a visit was strip searched. And so when youre coming to talk to people about the sexual abuse youve experienced and then youre getting strip searched for talking about it, that can be very traumatic. Both she and the former congresswoman are calling on the department of justice to investigate the entire system, to get rid of abuse against women. They say no one should suffer abuse while incarcerated. There has to be a Performance Review that is rigorous and robust so that if you are a prison guard and are of the old culture that somehow tolerated that kind of conduct, you needed to be terminated. Customers no longer have access to dining rooms at most taco bell restaurants in oakland, we spotted signs saying Dining Room Closed at the restaurant at 35th avenue and macarthur boulevard today, according to reports, four of the five taco bells in oakland are now drive thru only because of rising crime. The restaurants arent accepting cash either. Weve reached out to taco bell Corporate Headquarters for confirmation, but have yet to hear back at uc berkeley, jewish students were able to successfully march and rally on campus today, just two weeks after violence interrupted a previous gathering. University officials also forced supporters of the group Palestinian Justice to take down tape across sather gate. Abc seven News ReporterLeslie Brinkley has the story. Jewish students at cal, along with supporters from the community, gathered in front of zellerbach hall, many of them dressed in white. All were asking of the administration is that they enforce their own policies and make sure that jewish students feel like they can walk through the gates to campus every day, and feel welcome and have equal rights to free speech. The gate is still blocked in violation of school policies. For weeks, justice for palestine supporters have blocked the middle section of sather gate with yellow tape. Today, the university took it down and instead a massive banner was put up. We found an alternative that would not be taken down immediately. Uc berkeley did not remove it. The banner is up, it to represent. Its a violation of what are called time, place and manner rules. But we assess that using Law Enforcement to clear it would create turmoil. At noon, the jewish students marched onto sproul plaza and instead of passing through the gate and past the banner, they avoided a confrontation by literally forwarding the creek to get to the other side on a footpath. The crowd of 200 jewish supporters ended up in front of california hall, where faculty members offered their support. Commenting on the february 26th disturbing case that forced jewish students to move off campus, the administrations continued complacency only emboldens those who want to hurt jews. They would only go up after the peaceful rally. A woman unaffiliated with the march tore through the paper banner at the gate. Ramadan. Good job. Shame on you. Uc berkeley is currently on a Us Department of education list of campuses under investigation for discrimination. Im Leslie Brinkley, abc seven news. A San Francisco program aimed at helping the unhoused return to their hometowns is front and center. Today. Mayoral candidate ahsha safai is calling on the board of supervisors to make the program law. But mayor london breed tells abc seven News ReporterTara Campbell its an unnecessary move that will only bog down the system. Its a Program Designed to help unhoused people in San Francisco return to their loved ones in other communities, making the connections and even buying the bus tickets. Homeward bound began in 2005 under then mayor gavin newsom, and monday supervisor ahsha safai led the way as the rules committee took the first step in making it law, which would require annual reporting. And we ensured that the Human Services agency, along with department of homeless supportive housing, are elevating this program and putting it front and center as part of the toolkit. The mayoral candidate says the citys been letting the program falter since the covid 19 pandemic served over 11,000 people from the life of the program. Unfortunately, around 2018 2019, under mayor london breed, it got buried in the bureaucracy and it stopped being utilized. But mayor london breed says its an unnecessary move. I dont even know why theres even any attention or wasted time on whatever the supervisor is doing, because its already happening. The mayor says the pandemic hit the program hard. Its something nonprofits also saw homework found slowed down as a program during the pandemic because uh Public Transportation wasnt accessible. You know, we werent able to put people on busses and get them to where they they wanted to go. Meanwhile, the mayor says changes they made last year are helping the program recover. This year, weve helped over 300 people actually reunite with their friends or family members in other places, and shes confident theyre on their way to prepandemic levels. In my state of the city address, i made it clear that we are making a commitment to help reunite a thousand people within the year, and we are on track to do that. The rules committee is expected to pass the homeward bound legislation next week, putting it up for discussion by the board of supervisors. Tara campbell, abc seven news. Simitian and evan low cut it close in the battle for the second spot. Now it appears there arent many outstanding votes left to count, and simitian remains in the lead by 825 votes. Votes for a congressional seat in district 16. One of them will replace retiring representative anna eshoo. California may have seen the lowest voter turnout for a primary election in the states history. Only around 26 of registered voters cast a ballot, and here in the bay area, the numbers werent much better. Abc7 news south bay reporter Dustin Dorsey spoke with a voting Advocacy Group almost a week since super tuesday, and the votes are still coming in at the Santa Clara County registrar of voters office. Even with plenty of work to do, the overall turnout was not quite as super as the county wanted. So far. We are seeing about 30 turnout rate as of all the ballots that weve counted thus far. We still have about 57,000 ballots that are still yet to be counted. Despite more counting, Santa Clara County will likely see lower turnout than the 2022 primary. There was hope that vote by mail would increase participation, but data from the california secretary of States Office shows declines across the bay area, San Francisco, santa clara, san mateo all with modest dips. Alameda county, meanwhile, saw total voters cut in half, so we usually see lower turnout in primary elections versus the general election. But this primary was particularly low. Maybe even a record low for turnout in california. And frankly, were seeing this, you know, across the country, san jose state Political Science professor Melinda Jackson says low turnout leads to results that dont truly represent the population, a concern of the Latino Coalition of Silicon Valley executive director gabriela chavez. Lopez and her team worked hard to turn the turnout tides around before the election. Shes disappointed to see such low numbers. Its just not a top priority for folks. People are trying to put food on the table. Theyre trying to make money in order to live here in Silicon Valley. So voting tends to be put on the back burner for many folks and many working families, which we understand. Chavez lopez wants to see changes made to increase turnout, maybe eliminating the primary and moving to a ranked choice voter system where voters rank candidates by preference, streamlining that process and meeting voters where theyre at is something that ranked Choice Voting does. The city of oakland has it. The city of sacramento has it. So i think as the center of innovation, i believe that san jose could do something similar, anything to try and increase participation.
