Now well see temperatures gradually in the 50s along the coast 70s around the bay shoreline close to 80 inland. So its a nice day today. A little bit of a breeze. Drew, as youre waking up this morning, we want to get you updated on a shooting that injured two Police Officers in the south bay last night. It went down on san ignacio avenue in san jose. Santa teresa neighborhood. The suspect was also injured. Abc seven News Reporter lena howland is near where the shooting happened in south san jose. And lena, whats happening out there right now . Well, amanda, we do know that two san jose Police Officers were shot while responding to a disturbance call here somewhere in the area off of san ignacio avenue and bernal road. Now, if you take a look right behind me here, you can see there is still a Police Presence here in the lucky parking lot. Were also seeing several roads shut down in this area. Now we know that San Jose Police say this all happened right around 1030 last night, just off of san ignacio avenue. While investigating a disturbance call. They say officers made contact with a male suspect who shot at them, hitting two officers. Were told the officers returned fire and the suspect was taken into custody shortly after. The suspect and both officers were also taken to a nearby hospitals overnight. San jose Police Officers were seen waiting inside of the ambulance entrance at Regional Medical hospital with several patrol cars parked outside. At this point in time, its still not clear what prompted the disturbance call in the first place, and we are still waiting to hear an update on the condition of both officers involved. Keep in mind there are still multiple road closures in place at this hour. Police are asking everyone to avoid this area again. This is around san ignacio avenue avenue and bernal road for now. After a week of tense and sometimes violent protests on College Campuses, police are still moving in on protesters less than two hours ago, nypd started moving in to clear out an encampment at nyu. The university requested that assistance from the Police Department to break up what School Officials are calling an illegal encampment. Encampments at other universities are being dismantled after police arrived. Gloria, were learning that thousands of protesters have been arrested. Reggie, last night was so different from what we saw unfolding earlier this week, including the scene yesterday morning at ucla, where 130 people were arrested after two nights of violent confrontations with police. And according to new data compiled by the associated press, more than 2100 people have been arrested in propalestinian demonstrations nationwide since april 18th. While last night was much more calm, protests are still happening across the country. Police say that they detained a driver in portland who briefly accelerated toward some protesters at Portland State. Demonstrators there started to form encampments on that campus yesterday. The nypd now says at one of its officers accidentally discharged their firearm during the takeover at Columbia University on tuesday. Nobody was hurt. The bullet hit a wall. The white house says. Second gentleman doug emhoff spoke with jewish students and hillel leaders about the claims of antisemitism that theyre seeing at various universities. President biden addressed the protests at campuses around the country, expressing his support while also condemning those infringing on the rights of others. We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people or squash dissent. The American People are heard. In fact, peaceful protest is in the best tradition of how americans respond to consequential issues. But dissent must never lead to disorder or to denying the rights of others. So students can finish the semester and their college education. And the president also took the time yesterday to condemn islamophobia, antisemitism, and discrimination against arab americans. A fight started wednesday evening after someone grabbed an israeli flag out of the hands of a counterprotester people at the encampment say no one knows the man who did it, and his actions do not reflect their intentions. We have a long and storied history in california of student protests and i support their right to protest. Its also so important for our College Campuses to be safe places for everyone. Members of the group, students supporting israel, say the man who had his flag stolen is named ilan. They released a statement saying the act forcefully pulled alon into the violent mob, where he was beaten by two men, punched in the back of the neck and in the face several times. The event was nothing short of terrifying and has definitely resulted in physical and mental distress. Protesters say they dont plan to leave even when this semester ends. Next week. Pressure is growing from alumni demanding the uc system divest from companies with ties to israel. Many are vowing to withhold donations until uc leaders divest. This letter was sent to uc regents in january. It now has more than 5000 signatures from alumni, many people signing their support. Just in the past week. They specifically want the uc system to stop investing in weapons manufacturers. We have Weapons Companies that are directly benefiting and profiting, lockheed martin, elbit, boeing, grumman, raytheon. The university of california says it wont divest from israel. The office of the president issued a statement saying, quote, the university of california has consistently opposed calls for boycott against the and divestment from israel. While the university affirms the right of our Community Members to express diverse viewpoints, a boycott of this sort impinges on the Academic Freedom of our students and faculty, and the unfettered change of ideas on our campuses is. Reporter the stages to the food trucks San Francisco taking another step towards a comeback with downtown. First thursdays make it feel like there is actually things that are happening in downtown San Francisco. Make us think of a future in the city and give us hope. Tonight, marking the first of many block parties in the soma district scheduled for the first thursday of each month. Its great. Its i saw them setting up. Its a fun vibe, its nice to see a lot of the stores that i see in some of the, the other events and. Yeah, its a good time. The food smells great. San franciscans need to remember that we are great at throwing a party and celebrating getting people back to downtown. District six supervisor matt dorsey believes the city is on its way to bringing the downtown back from the pandemic. Hopefully, this is the kind of thing that makes people who are have the option of working from home and commuting want to come downtown, and thats good for our downtown businesses. Even if people are coming downtown for work, they leave as soon as its done, so its fun to actually have something nearby for like all the coworkers or friends to meet up and enjoy time together. I have little slimline versions of them right here, and for business owners, its a welcome sight. I mean, these events are great. I love seeing all the people coming out. Briefly heavy at times in the morning. Will create some slick roads. The winds pick up a bit with the frontal passage and rainfall for most anywhere from a half of an inch to an inch for most areas. This is saturday and you can see theres this period between about 6 a. M. And noon where those rain chances are really elevated after about noon, those rain chances really drop off and well actually see the sunshine come back out tomorrow afternoon. Another bay area postal worker robbed while on duty. The reward now being offered to help curb the troubling trend and some bad news for weekend events. Organizers are blaming the incoming rain as the reason for some popular events to be canceled or postponed for now. At 513, well take a live look outside and c to help find the people who robbed a postal worker in oakland. This is the latest in a concerning trend of postal worker robberies in the bay area. So this went down yesterday afternoon. You can see the postal worker exiting a building on euclid avenue in the adams point neighborhood. Thats when a person appears and robs the worker. Wow. Post Office Officials say at least two people were involved in this robbery. And so far, no ones been arrested. New developments on the fire that destroyed the ultra popular horn barbecue in oakland. Investigators say they are treating this case as an arson. The Fire Department believes evidence found at the scene indicates the fire was intentionally set. They say the investigation is ongoing, as is the search for suspects. The barbecue spot on mandela parkway closed after the fire in november last week, horns owners reopened in a shared space with their other restaurant on eighth street. And if youre looking forward to celebrating Cinco De Mayo this weekend, san jose could be your spot to do it. There will be two parades and a Big Community festival. The city is getting ready for this years celebrations, and there will be at least one big change. Last year, Police Closed streets and freeway exits, making it very hard to get to celebrations, especially the lowrider parade. Many called the move racist and discriminatory. This year, however, in an effort to mend fences, spd will participate in the parade. This is the second year for the parade since the city lifted a ban on cruising before the ban. After the ban, weve always wanted people to come down here, but to celebrate and do so safely, so as weve seen in years past, weve had an increase in sideshow activity in some of our parking lots and some of our streets. And as we have in years past, we will employ a zero tolerance on any type of criminal behavior. We will have Additional Resources out on the streets. There will still be some road closures for safety reasons, but this year, police will focus enforcement on alcohol related incidents. The Cinco De Mayo parade gets underway at 9 a. M. Sunday, starting at city hall. The lowrider parade starts at ten along king road and the big festival is from 11 a. M. To 5 p. M. At plaza de cesar chavez, san jose state engineering students are showing off cars they created from scratch. Spark racing creates brand new, fully electric formula c and baja style vehicles, with the goal of competing against other universities from organize the organizing the program. Welding, driving, racing. The entire thing is 100 student run. Its unlike anything else you get to do in college, and thats kind of the value of c and baja and formula like is youre really getting these real world experiences. San franciscos how weird street fair is being postponed because of the rain expected this weekend. The annual event that includes music, costumes and characters was scheduled to happen tomorrow.
