For a bay area digital newspaper that went above and beyond what, when their community needed it the most. Good morning. Welcome to tuesday, may 7th. Were inching closer to the warm up. Yeah, it was nice yesterday gets even better here over the next couple of days. That sunshine is going to be with us all week long this morning. We have clear skies. Live view from our mount tam cam. You see all the lights of the city even as far south as the east bay, well off on the horizon, and were in store for just another day of sunshine and even warmer temperatures than yesterday. We talked about how it wouldnt be as cold this morning as yesterday, and thats what were seeing. We have temperatures more in the 50s, right now. Remember yesterday morning we had areas in the 30 so not as chilly as we were monday morning, but still we have our typical 40s in the north bay, 50 right now in novato. So its clear out there from our exploratorium camera. We have a lot of sunshine today. Your sunrise here in about an hour at 607. Its just a bright day today. And later on this afternoon were warmer than yesterday. Were pretty close to where we should be for this time of the year 70. Widespread away from the coast. So well hit a high of about 69 in oakland, 73 in san jose, 76 in santa rosa, 65 in the city, which is exactly average for this time of the year, 75 in concord. But the coast half and bay a little cooler at 58 degrees. Reggie drew, thank you. This morning, new concerns about Autonomous Cars on the streets. Just as waymo is about to expand its fleet of selfdriving cars on the peninsula, we have this video gaining traction online. It shows a Waymo Robotaxi in San Francisco driving in a lane that its not supposed to be in, then making an illegal left turn. Abc seven News Reporter j. R. Stone spoke with Industry Experts about the future of robotaxis, experimenting on our roads. Youre looking at viewer video showing a waymo selfdriving car not only driving in the all new red bus lanes along van ness avenue in San Francisco, but also stopping to make a left hand turn at post street on sunday, a move that, according to the sign, is illegal. Phil koopman specializes in selfdriving car safety. Carnegie Mellon University and has done so for 20 plus years. Were seeing a lot of loose ends that the technology isnt quite there. The companies are claiming its safer, but things like driving the wrong way down the street, as long as theres no crash, they would say dont count for unsafe meaning this incident likely would not get logged as a dangerous or concerning one since no one got hurt. We did reach out to waymo to see what happened, but as of late monday night, they have yet to respond. Koopman has Major Concerns with the way testing is being done with the selfdriving companies. Well, i think there is no such thing as public road testing without a driver either. Youre testing or youre done and youre deployed. Levent erdal is chair of the Computer Science department at cal state east bay, who believes testing is going the way it should. In my opinion, as of today, it is pretty safe and it is going to get safer in my opinion , along the way. Erdal believes that if and when ai expands to selflearning within these cars instead of rule based, it could be a huge improvement. As for the safety of waymo and other selfdriving vehicles, erdal says nothing is 100, especially not human drivers. So i believe that the driverless cars, Autonomous Cars has a future, and i believe that that future is already here. I experienced myself and i believe that waymo is really, really good, really, really safe stuff. As for this waymo vehicle driving in the bus lane, the sfmta says the selfdriving cars are not allowed in the red transit only lanes in San Francisco. J. R. Stone, abc seven news.
