San Francisco Unified School District facing a financial pitfall. The proposals being made by the superintendent and floating docks that were packed with sea lions just last week, now sitting practically empty this morning. The reason some of the bay areas most famous residents had to be temporarily evicted. Everybodys getting evicted out here. I mean, when they come for the sea lions. Its really something. Welcome to wednesday, may 8th. The warm up is here. Yes. So were going to feel a lot warmer this afternoon. And then it turns hot around here tomorrow. Heres a live look from sutro tower. The cameras bouncing around just a little bit this morning. We do have a wind advisory that is in effect for all of Solano County this morning. Parts of napa county and sonoma county, basically the hills of the north bay, because we do have an offshore wind right now that will continue through tonight into early tomorrow morning. The winds currently, you can see theyre gusting anywhere from about 15 to 30mph. And what that is doing right now is keeping temperatures elevated where that wind is impacting some of these cities, like napa, saint helena, were in the low and mid 80s right now, but where the winds are a lot calmer. And some of our sheltered valleys like danville, concord, were a lot cooler coming in with temperatures in the mid and upper 40s. So kind of a mixed bag out there this morning if you feel the wind, you feel the mild air. But everybody later on today is going to feel a warmer afternoon. Take a look at these temperatures. Mid 60s, coast side, upper 70s around the bay shoreline, low 80s inland. Your sunrise here at 606 in the morning. State officials had some tough words for the sfusd board, blasting both their personal and business practices. And the board of the san Francisco Unified School District gathered last night for a special meeting to discuss the districts budget problems. A new report from the California Department of education highlights the financial strain and says that s. F, usd may run out of cash by the next school year. Sf usd superintendent matt wayne introduced a presentation by state advisors on what steps they think the District Needs to take. Despite the difficulties, he says he is confident the district will be able to meet its obligations moving forward. Tonights presentation of our 2223 audit is both, i think, exemplifies what youre saying is both the progress weve made, but how far we need to go. So you have to recognize you have a problem. Just last week, the state gave new powers to some of their representatives that have been assigned to monitor s. F, usd, and those representatives are now able to overturn or stop Financial Decisions made by the superintendent or the school board in order to save some money. New developments in the war between israel and hamas. The Biden Administration paused a shipment of 3500 bombs to israel last week because of concerns they would be used in rafah. Thats where more than 1 million civilians are currently sheltering. Amanda defense secretary lloyd austin is expected to testify on capitol hill today. Yes, stephanie. Defense secretary lloyd austin will testify today before a senate panel. He will likely be asked about u. S. Policy. This comes as two republican senators said they were shocked and deeply concerned about reports the Biden Administration often failed to notify congress before withholding ammunition to israel. U. S. Officials are worried delaying weapons shipments could put israels defense at risk. Israeli forces launched a ground operation into rafah and have taken control of the palestinian side of the Border Crossing the shipment that was paused last week consisted of 2,000 pound bombs and 500 pound explosive. Gives a Senior Administration official shared a statement with abc news. It reads in part, we are especially focused on the end use of the 2,000 pound bombs and the impact they could have in dense urban settings. Hundreds of people gathered at uc berkeleys sproul plaza yesterday to protest israels actions in rafah. The plaza has served as the site of an encampment for the past two weeks. Students continue to push the university to divest from companies that do business in israel. We are now 13 or 14 days into our encampments here at berkeley, and we are not here for fun and games. We are here to tell them that as long as you continue this annihilation of our people, we will continue to puncture power in its eye. A spokesperson for uc berkeley says it will not divest from israel. Many universities are altering upcoming Graduation Plans amid security concerns involving recent protests. Cals big graduation is set to go on this weekend. The University Says everything is Going Forward as they planned it. Thousands of undergraduates will get their diplomas at california Memorial Stadium saturday morning. If youre going know that there is a clear bag policy and no banners or signs are allowed. At last check. Sather gate is open, but the encampment at sproul plaza is growing and there are barricades blocking access in some places. Campus police are keeping an eye on the plaza. There are also private Security Guards. Were going to be prioritizing the ability of graduating students, their friends and their families to participate in and to enjoy one of the most meaningful days in their life. In addition to the big graduation, there are 90 other graduation related ceremonies and events around campus over the coming days. In Southern California, officials at Pomona College are preparing for protestors to interrupt graduation ceremonies this weekend. A camp went up monday morning right in front of the main stage. Pomona was one of the first places where propalestinian encampments started, and some students were arrested there after entering an administration building. How long are you going to stay here until Pomona College . Divests. So even if that means commencement this sunday, youll be here. Yeah we will not rest. I can understand where theyre coming from. But again, you know, this class didnt have a 2020 graduation. And, you know, now they might not even have a 2024 graduation. Commencement events start on friday and conclude sunday morning. Annika ford, morthal, and leaders from School Districts in new york city and montgomery county, maryland, will all testify during a House Committee on education and the workforce in march, the Antidefamation League and Brandeis Center Brandeis Center filed a civil rights complaint against berkeley unified School District. It claims the School District ignored severe and persistent harassment of jewish students. It also claims students endured antisemitic teacher rants in the months after the war began. So the warming trend is underway. What to expect. We have some warm winds out there this morning. This afternoon, temperatures going above average. And those numbers just continue to warm through the rest of the week. Those winds right now are strongest in parts of the north bay. From calistoga to fairfield. We have these winds between about 20 and 25mph. Its an offshore wind this morning, and thats why we have some of the warmer temperatures to start our day. Heres future tracker showing you by 10 a. M. Were already well into the 60s. If not closing in on 70 degrees in some of our cities. Well go into the 70s in most areas right around lunchtime. A really good day to grab that meal outside. And then later on this afternoon, widespread 70s and low 80s. Its going to feel warm today under those sunny skies. So a high of 74 in the city, 78 in oakland, 80 in san jose, concord, 82. In santa rosa. The coast feeling nice with a lot of sunshine. Mid 60s for half moon bay, santa cruz, up to 77 degrees and those temperatures just warm. Even more tomorrow. It just feels like summer across the region with most of us going into the 80s. And then we turn hot inland by friday with 90 degrees and our hottest cities. The weekend is looking fantastic, right . Another major tenet, according to the chronicle, google is leaving its 300,000 square foot space along the embarcadero next year. Amanda. Google is not totally leaving the city. Yeah, correct. This is another result, though, of flexible schedules and working from Home Companies just dont need as much space. A spokesperson for google confirmed to the chronicle the company is leaving its huge office space at one market plaza. Google has occupied that space since 2018, but its lease expires next april. One market plaza has two high rise towers and a smaller Office Building called the landmark. Google will continue operating in the landmark, but well pull out of one market spear tower, the Company Tells the chronicle. It remains, quote, committed to our long term presence in San Francisco. You can now learn more about the life of legendary reverend cecil williams, a collection of documents chronicling the late civil rights leaders work at glide Memorial Church have found a permanent home now at the San Francisco librarys main branch. They include decades of information about how glide served people in the tenderloin and the lgbtqia communities as well as williams speeches, sermons, and correspondence. Williams died last month. His Memorial Service will be held may 12th at glide. Doors open at noon and the ceremony will begin at 1 00. Watch for more kids on the road this morning. The idea is to get kids excited about modes of transportation that are good for our health, climate, and communities. Many schools are hosting special events and activities today. All right. Did you see this the past few nights near coit tower, a mysterious bright green and blue laser beam shooting skyward. It first popped up monday night and could be seen for miles. It does have the necessary approval from the city as well as the faa, and we found out its to celebrate the rsa conference, which is going on currently at the moscone center. According to mayor breed, its the second largest conference to be held in the city, and the rsa conference has been with us for more than 30 years. They welcome over 40,000 people from all around the world to talk about cyber security. So were so happy to welcome them back to San Francisco. Now, as for the beam, its going to be around for one more night. Pier 39 says so many sea lions visited the docks last week. They had to clear it out for repairs. This is video from just a week ago. Look at them. Wow, it is totally full. Theres no room. Not one inch. Literally not one inch. Were told this is the biggest gathering they have seen in 15 years. In that time, pier 39 told us the floating docks got damaged. I mean, you know, these animals are not the lightest. So take a look at what we saw just yesterday. Certainly there are sea lions there, but nothing compared to what we saw. So the docks are fixed. The sea lions can come back. But the harbormaster says some of the sea lions may be a little bit cautious. I mean, you know, i would be too, if i got unceremoniously kicked out of my home, right . I want to see the video of them getting them off the dock. Like, how did that all happen . I mean, some of them are massive, right . Was in the middle of the night while theyre sleeping, you know . Right. Surprised them. How did we not know . I dont know, i mean theyre famously loud. Yeah. You know, and feisty. They will fight. I just hope they come back. Yeah. I want to see them. Well, could you imagine being a tourist thinking, oh, im going to see this whole just area filled with them. Yeah. Where are they happened . Youre like sorry, they were too big. We had to repair our docks. Its been quite some time, you know, 15 years. San francisco needs to make a decision. Are we not popular enough or are we too popular . So true. All right, so the heat is coming our way this afternoon. And this continues for the rest of the week, depending on where you are, this week will depend on how hot you get. Meaning the warming gets underway here today. Our coastal cities. Our warmest day is going to be on thursday. By friday well see a little bit of a marine layer return. But inland cities, friday is your warmest day. So tomorrow were well above average everywhere. But by friday well likely see 90 degree heat returning and our warmest areas inland. This morning were talking about those warm winds. We have a wind advisory in effect for parts of the north bay and you can see clearly where we have those winds like brentwood, vallejo, fairfield, saint helena. Were in the 60s right now. Other areas that see much lighter winds like san mateo, fremont, danville were much colder in the 40s. Right now, that wind advisory continues through tomorrow morning. Heres a look at the forecast today. Inland sunny. Were going into the low 80s for daytime highs around the bay shoreline. It is going to be a warm one. Youll feel that warmth pretty quickly today upper 70s under those bright conditions. And then along the coast we will find sunny skies and highs barely hitting about 6062 degrees. But it will feel nice today. Highs across the region. Its above average today. A lot of sunshine. You dont need many layers. A light jacket this morning. Then this afternoon we can get away with shorts and a t shirt. 74 in the city, 78 in oakland, 80 in san jose. About 82 in santa rosa. Well watch those winds continue this afternoon. They get a little bit breezier, about 20 to 30mph. And then overnight, those winds will continue keeping us mild late tonight. And then tomorrow in the afternoon well start to see a bit of an onshore flow developing. And thats why the coast will start to cool off on friday. Overnight tonight well find mild air once again mid 50s to the low 60s for overnight lows. Tomorrow though is going to be a very warm day. Were approaching 80 degrees in the city mid and upper 80s inland. And then on friday there are those 90 degree readings that is going to be the first 90 degree day of the year.
