Years. And how you can help save the rails paid parking program. San bruno businesses pushing back against parking meters in their downtown district. The urgent request of city leaders about making changes. Plus, a road trip unlike any other two best friends from florida completing a 500 mile ride in toy cars. And they raised money along the way for nonprofit organizations. Good morning to you. Welcome to thursday, may 9th. Im looking at this background behind us and it is really pretty. Its also going to be really warm. Get ready. Summer like weather. Some of the warmest air since last october. Were taking a live look at our east bay hills camera this morning, where we find clear skies like reggie alluded to with the exploratorium camera. We do have some mild air out there right now. Look at some of these numbers. Were in the 60s from hayward to oakland. The city right now is at 65, but there are some cooler spots like Half Moon Bay and gilroy in the mid 40s to the lower 50s. But the north bay, a huge chunk of napa, sonoma, marin county right now starting out in the low and mid 60s. So that will get us into the 80s later on today. Part of the reason why were mild, we have this wind right now still offshore that is breezy and that is giving those temperatures their mild start right now. So we take a live look from the rooftop camera here at kgo along the embarcadero. It is sunny all day long. Sunrise here very shortly at 605. Its warm to hot. Well have 70s along the coast mid and upper 80s for your hottest spots inland. Hi sue, good morning drew and good morning everyone. We have got a beautiful morning. If you have to be stuck in traffic then at least its pretty outside. We do have a problem in san leandro that well get to, but i wanted to show you the san mateo bridge, which is getting a little busy this morning. Youve got about a 17 minute drive time across the bay. All right, lets hit our big problem this morning, which is a big rig blocking the two. Right lanes on northbound 238 in san leandro, near hesperian. You are backed all the way onto 580 into the uh Castro Valley. And big rigs, by the way, are allowed to use 580 because of this sig alert. Sue. Thank you. Happening today, a key vote in the saga over a potential name change. Oakland airport wants to add San Francisco bay to its name. San francisco is not a fan of that plan. Abc seven News Reporter ryan curry live at Oakland International to sort this whole thing out. And ryan, San FranciscoCity Attorney sent a letter urging oakland to drop the name change. Good morning. City attorney david chu trying again to stop this move from the port of oakland, saying that if they do not Work Together, San Francisco and oakland and the port of oakland, he will proceed with this lawsuit. He telling them in a letter that both sides should Work Together on a name that benefits both San Francisco and oakland. He filed a lawsuit back in april claiming the proposed name change will create chaos and confuse millions of travelers. He also says it infringes on sfos trademark. The port board voted unanimously back in early april to change the name, and they told abc seven news back then, sfo cannot lay claim to the geographically descriptive term San Francisco, let alone claim exclusive rights to the San Francisco bay. The port trust that travelers understand the San Francisco bay. Like virtually every other major metropolitan metropolitan area throughout the world, can contain more than one airport. David chu, in his letter yesterday saying, if oakland continues to rebuff our offers to partner, we will have to move forward with the next steps in our trademark lawsuit. He went on to say the collaboration is good for both parties. He wants them to Work Together, not against each other, to try to figure out a solution to these two sides going against each other. Right now, the port of oakland saying they feel as if they need to do this to help make travel more convenient for people in oakland. All right. Thanks ryan. Now, barts financial situation is bad and its only expected to get worse. Transit officials believe voters approval of a tax measure may be the only hope for survival. Today, the agency will discuss its latest budget projections. They show bart will run out of nearly 2 billion in state and federal funding around april 2026. That money has been making up losses from lower sales tax revenue and fewer riders since the pandemic. By 2027, the agency expects to face a 385 million deficit. Tesla appears to be under a hiring freeze in north america. The Company Currently has just three openings on its jobs board and archive version of teslas website shows there are 3400 open jobs in the u. S, mexico and canada at the beginning of the month, and this comes a month after tesla laid off about 10 of its 140,000 person workforce. And were told summer internships were reportedly revoked for some students happening today, california utility regulators are set to make a big decision about our electricity bills. They are scheduled to vote on a proposal that would change the way privately owned Utility Companies like pgandes can build customers. If approved, most people would notice two changes a 24 per month flat rate and a lower electricity usage rate. That flat rate fee would be used for things like grid maintenance and wildfire mitigation, which are currently included in the usage rate. Going to make utility bills more affordable for low income households. That will reduce the volatility of month to month bills, and it will promote electric creation. If this proposal is approved, the new billing structure would take effect next year. New parking meters in downtown san bruno are causing a lot of frustration for some people. Now. Business owners are asking for a change. They held a meeting with City Council Members to address their concerns. People now have to pay for at least a full hour because theres no partial hour parking. I paid two hours for a 30 minute swim lesson. I feel like in San Francisco, most of them, its just like an up arrow down arrow. And you do like a quarter of an hour increments. Like Something Like that would be a lot easier and seems pretty intuitive. The city of san bruno rolled out their pay by plate kiosks on downtown streets and parts of El Camino Real on april. The meters require payments seven days a week from 8 a. M. To 8 p. M. In some areas, and this morning, were remembering former peninsula congressman and environmentalist pete mccloskey. He died yesterday at the age of 96. Mccloskey served seven terms in the house from 1967 to 1983. Many considered him a maverick republican, staunchly against the vietnam war and the first member of congress to publicly call for the impeachment of president richard nixon. He also cochaired the first earth day in 1970, and helped write the federal endangered species act. Mccloskey served in the marine corps during the korean war, where he was awarded the navy cross and silver star. He spent the last 20 years of his life farming in the sacramento valley. This is one of my prized possessions, having served in congress. I dont know if you can see this, but, he presented this to me, midway through my career and he said he wanted me to have one of his purple hearts because he said there was no equivalent medal for a civilian who have served and been wounded. And, he thought this was one way of rectifying it. So its a treasure. Speer also shared with us a picture taken last week of mccloskey and his wife, helen. Speer calls it a beautiful depiction of true love. Time now. 608. And were taking a live look from our oakland camera right now. It is mild, 63 degrees currently, but we also have this northeasterly wind. Thats an offshore wind. Look at your humidity levels. Were down to 33. So it feels dry out there this morning. And it is warm. So the headline today is that we are set to sweat. This is going to be some of the warmest air we have seen since last october. Later on this afternoon. Temperatures today are going well into the 80s. So you look at the first column. Thats your forecast. Highs right now. The second column is where we typically land and you can see the difference is about 12 to 17 degrees warmer later on this afternoon soon. So well look at future weather. We were we warm very fast today 10 a. M. Were in the 70s by lunchtime were seeing 80s pop up on the board. And then later on this afternoon. Noon. Were well into the 80s in most cities, so a high of 81 today in the city, well go to 84 in oakland, 87 in san jose, 88 in santa rosa. Even the coast from Half Moon Bay to santa cruz, low 70s to the low 80s. And it gets even hotter here inland tomorrow, where 90s are back for the first time this year, well take a look at the complete weekend forecast, with the seven day reggie coming up in a few minutes. Thanks, drew. Boosting Small Business a new plan that would change the way thousands are taxed. Stunning statistic. The latest numbers on the low attendance at as games as they play their final season in oakland, and a startling sight on a southwest for the 14th. That 14th day in a row and more is on the way today. In the past 24 hours, three people were killed in tennessee and north carolina, a state of emergency was declared in gaston county, north carolina. Thats last night where a powerful storm took down highway signs and power lines. One person was killed by a falling tree. If you go by sims park, the winds were so strong that blew the wall down. So theres a lot thats happened here in gaston county. There were catastrophic. The highest risk for tornadoes today will be in alabama and georgia. Were following up on an idea we first told you about yesterday on abc seven mornings. Theres a new proposal to help Small Businesses in San Francisco still recovering from the pandemic. On monday, two Business Leaders submitted a measure that would overhaul the citys tax system. This proposal would increase the revenue cap that would exempt Small Businesses from paying taxes. Currently its at 2 million. It would go up to 5 million. Its a move that proponents say would allow for more Business Expansion and hiring. 60 of our Retail Businesses would be completely exempt from our gross receipts tax. Anything that can help Small Businesses would definitely be welcomed. To offset the cost of the proposed tax breaks, rates would rise again in 2027. Its the as final season at the coliseum before heading to sacramento and then las vegas. Crunch contending numbers. It seems bay area fans might be losing interest in them. Feel like that is the understatement of the year,ut we are getting a look at the attendance numbers for the first 21 home games of the season. The yellow shows this seasons peak at about 13,500 fans on opening day. The low was just 2900 fans. On monday last season is shown in blue, with more than 25,000 fans on opening day. This is sad because ive loved the as all my life and hes brought me here since i was just a baby, and its like my whole childhood is just right here in this stadium, another as fan says he will follow the team, but the move is not an easy transition. Manfred and fisher have done the impossible. Theyve lessened my interest in major league baseball. I will never be a giants fan, and i will go see them in sacramento and ill see them in vegas, but it will never be the same for me. The team is averaging slightly more than 600 or 6000, i should say fans per home game this year. A new docu series on hulu is sharing the influence of black twitter.
