Propalestinian chants rang out thursday as Police Arrested protesters occupied an abandoned building at uc berkeley. Police making 12 arrests, clearing a building at the anna head alumni complex around 830, a School Spokesperson saying protesters were arrested for trespassing, breaking and entering and vandalism. Meanwhile, police work to control a couple of dozen protesters gathered at the scene, some tense moments as police tried to push back the crowd. Protesters didnt want to speak on camera, but we did speak with a berkeley resident. Its going to keep happening until, theres a ceasefire or the war ends. Berkeley is a traditionally a protest city. So i think its going to be a lot of berkeley incidents, just throughout the summer. Never stop me. Police eventually dispersing the crowd. Protesters insisting they will be back. Tara campbell abc seven news. Happening tomorrow. The man convicted of breaking into Nancy Pelosis home and attacking her husband, paul, will be sentenced in federal court. Prosecutors want david depape put away for 40 years. His lawyers are asking for a 14 year sentence. There are two clearly different opinions, with the federal government arguing this was an act of terrorism. While the defense could argue depape needs mental help, hes not someone that needs to be locked up. If hes willing to go to treatment. So i think thats going to be the competing narrative in that courtroom. How much of mr. Depapes Mental Health issues played a role in this case, and what the judge does with that in terms of fashioning a sentence that sends the message that we need to protect american democracy. But at the same time recognizes that perhaps mr. Depape could be returned to society if he expresses remorse and he undergoes treatment. Now, keep in mind depape also faces a trial on state charges. What happens tomorrow in federal court could very well trickle down to that case. Well, certainly the jury is being selected in the state case, and theyre now going to know that mr. Depape could be facing 40 years in federal prison. Depape faces attempted murder charges in the state case. A conviction could carry a sentence of life in prison. And were getting dramatic video out of houston tonight where severe storms rolled through, triggering tornado warnings and doing all kinds of damage. Buildings in the downtown area had their windows blown out and the wind toppled trees. As you can see, with at least one landing on top of a car. Its what youd expect at a county fair, and i have corn on the cob, kids and families alike chowing down, having the time of their lives. We got to pet the goats. The baby goats. It was really cute. But last year here at the Contra Costa County fair, there were several fights among teenagers seen here in the cell phone video. Fair organizers, though, tell us that changes have been made when it comes to security. I did see a lot of personnel in place to there. Yes, we have beefed up security, put security in our parking lots and more outside the entrance of the gates just as a precaution. Anybody 18 years are under needs a chaperon of somebody 25 years or older to be here with the fair. We want to make sure that people are not just dropping off their teenagers and thinking were a babysitting site, and those changes are being seen already. I think the chaperon part is awesome, because i really feel like we all have to take care of our own kids. Did they check coming in . They did because they had. They asked the kids and they had a group of people before me that they would not let them in because they didnt have a proper chaperon. Last year was a little chaotic. It was a little too much, you know, younger crowd was kind of taken over. A lot of the stuff that was here. Its a lot more low key today than it usually was last year. The goal a safe and fun weekend for families. We have a tina turner tribute band, a couple Different Party bands out here, camel rides, pony rides, petting zoo, lots of carnival rides, lots of great fair food. Tonight, the city of San Francisco is celebrating its new numbers on homelessness, but it doesnt really paint the full picture. So lets walk you through it. The results of the most recent homelessness count were put out today. The city says the number of People Living out on the street has reached the lowest level in nearly a decade. However, when you look at the total number of homeless across the city, that number is at a record high at more than 8300 people. The number of people sleeping in vehicles spiked 37. This is all despite a massive amount of money being spent on the issue, according to a recent city audit, funding for the crisis reached 676,000,000 in 20 2223. Across the bay. Were also keeping a close eye in on oakland this week with the citys new era in law enforcement. Of course. Police chief Lloyd Mitchell is in his first week on the job, and we wanted to find out more about how it will go from there. So we had oakland mayor shengtao join us today on abc seven news midday to discuss his new role. The first line of work for chief mitchell is really a meeting. You know, his rank and file. Hes going to meet his rank and file. You know, he understands the strategy. He fully supports the strategy. And were going to continue to press on that gas pedal because it you know, for us its about saving lives. And its about making sure that people feel safe. In oakland, mayor tao points to a study showing that the departments operation cease fire Crime Fighting strategy is getting results. Recent crime data shows most all forms of crime have fallen this year, except for robberies. Of course, celebrating the breakthroughs is a key part of building a better bay area. And tonight, the south bay is the source of a big one. Downtown san jose is hoping to spark the Summer Season with a little song and dance. And thats not all the abc seven news south bay reporter Lauren Martinez has more from tonights events. Hoping to be a boost for the downtown scene. A new kind of scene is brewing. This is the first year off the grid, a popular food truck market that started in San Francisco 14 years ago is now in san jose. Theyre partnering with gordon biersch, his weekly night market. I love it, i feel comfortable i can bring her out. Its every type of food we could try beers and music. Its like pretty nice. Every thursday theyll have live music from san jose, jazz and rotating food trucks. Im a foodie, so i just love food. So yeah, and i like i like it that the trucks are a little locally owned business usually. So i can come support them in downtown. The Summer Block Party series returned to. Each month through october, a block party will be held to highlight local music vendors, arts and Small Businesses. We just want people to feel welcome. At consett barbershop, they brought the chairs outside for exposure. We have talent like him that needs platforms and events like this to showcase. Owner khan chung invited other Small Business owners to set up in front. It feels amazing. It feels great because i believe in downtown and this is what we need, mayor matt mehan said. We talked about the progress and success of visitor activity in downtown last year. The free holiday event christmas in the park brought in 800,000 people. Visa is rolling out changes to how credit and debit cards will operate. The biggest change will allow banks to issue one payment card that can be connected to multiple bank accounts.
