We broke the news exactly 24 hours ago about oakland selling its share of the coliseum property. Now were getting more details about what comes next. And today is supposed to be a day of celebration at cal, as we learn the names of the new falcon chicks that live on campus. But the talk this morning is about the schools rebranding. Good morning. Welcome to thursday, may 23rd. Its going to start the check of our forecast, drew. Yeah, were still for another Beautiful Day today. Mild temperatures continue to rule the forecast this afternoon. Heres just a really lovely picture from our exploratorium camera this morning. Its very calm on the bay waters right now that sun is rising over the horizon and we have full sunshine out there. The only area that has any sort of cloud cover right now is half moon bay. But there well find full sunshine even as we head deeper into the morning. Heres a look at temperatures right now, most of us starting out our day in the low and mid 50s, and its another day where you take the light jacket with you. This morning, you keep it on for an hour or two, and then you can take it off as the morning turns mild. In the afternoon is warm. So looking at the forecast along the coast, we have some cloud cover right now, but you can see full sunshine is quickly appearing as those clouds clear temperatures today along the coast, staying in the 50s around the bay shoreline. Its a bright looking forecast. Its mild, very similar to yesterday, upper 60s to the lower 70s. Right around 4 p. M. You notice, though, our marine layer comes back pretty quickly later on this evening. That was different than yesterday. Yesterday we had clear skies for much of the day inland. Its a warm one, sunshine from start to finish and temperatures topping out in the low 80s. Lets see how the roads are doing this morning with amanda. Good morning. Good morning drew. Were going to take you live to the bay bridge toll plaza, where you can see traffic is filling up to the end of the parking lot right now. The metering lights have been turned on, and that drive from highway four to San Francisco is going to take you about 56 minutes. And Something Else to tell you about. Youre not going to see it on your screen, but a heads up for drivers in pacifica. Theres some activity around the devils slide area. Details are extremely limited at this hour, but we know that chp is apparently waiting for the Coroners Office to get out there, signaling a death of some sort. So were definitely going to be keeping our eyes on that. Back to the desk, amanda. Thank you. Were going to show you what the roads and the airports look like right now. Why . Because millions of people are about to head out for memorial day. This could be the busiest and almost 20 years. Gloria, hows it going . Good morning reggie. Yeah, all morning long weve been seeing a lot of people coming in for their flights this morning. Behind me you can see folks that are getting ready to check in so they can fly this memorial day weekend. And an airport spokesperson tells me that this weekend theyre expecting more than 750,000 travelers. Thats over 98 of what they saw prepandemic. In 2019, the editor in chief of the skift travel site explains why she thinks that is. We are still in that post pandemic kind of Revenge Travel situation. We all still remember it wasnt that many years ago where we couldnt go out and spend time with our family and friends uh either this Holiday Weekend or in the summer. So people are really still going out there. They are. You know, taking advantage of the long weekend. And heres a look at forecasted flights. The faa says its expecting memorial day weekend to be the busiest since 2010, with more than 53,000 flights today and more than 50,000 tomorrow. And experts say this could mean we have a busy Summer Travel season ahead, so if you are planning on flying this summer, gear up. Its going to be busy this summer as well. Live at sfo Gloria Rodriguez, abc seven news. Thank you gloria. This morning the power is back on at uc berkeley. Just before 630 last night, the power went out and about 50 buildings on campus. Classes are expected to resume this morning at chris at a Christopher High School in gilroy, after a student was arrested for stabbing another student. This happened yesterday. Staff put that school on lockdown after a fight broke out between the students around lunchtime. Thats what Contra Costa County fair organizers say happened outside this antioch bank around 2 a. M. Monday. They say two fair workers left work. They went about a mile and a half to the bank to make a deposit. When someone robbed them of the cash. Abc seven news spoke with the president of the county fair board of directors. He says he was not making the day to day calls at the fair, and he is demanding answers. You never send an unarmed citizen to a bank at a wee hours of the day, when the banks dont even open and expect us to make a deposit. He says the robbery could impact the fairs music headliners and animal attractions in the future. Police have not released any information about the suspect or if this crime was planned or random. This morning we are hearing from former Oakland Police chief Leronne Armstrong about why he wants a seat on oakland city council. If youre watching abc seven morning yesterday, you heard about his plans to enter the race. Well, mid morning he did it. Walking into city hall and filling out the paperwork. Armstrong is a west oakland native. He now lives in district seven. Hes running for the at Large Council seat, which represents the entire city. I could serve beyond, you know, law enforcement, beyond the Police Department that i could continue to give back to my community. Thats given so much to me. Armstrong joins a race with eight other candidates. He says his top priority are public safety, homelessness and improving oaklands image. You may remember armstrong was fired from his job as police chief more than a year ago. Now he is suing the city for wrongful termination. He says the lawsuit, though, will not impact this race. Today, oakland mayor shang tao is set to reveal her plans to fix a growing budget crisis in her city, a key component is expected to be the landmark deal to sell off the citys stake in the coliseum site. We first told you about this massive deal yesterday morning. Its worth more than 100 million bucks. The buyer is the African American sports and entertainment group, or rsg, the founder says his organization is ready to transform the land to something that can reshape not just east oakland, but the entire city. At yesterdays announcement, Castlemont High School students showed their renderings of what might come. Scg says they could build new housing, Entertainment Centers and new sports arenas. The coliseum site really represents an Incredible Opportunity to do to revitalize this Community Without displacing and without gentrification. It is good timing, but i would say its not good timing, the sense they should have been happened decades ago. Right . Were talking about a parcel in in a space where we have the highest amount of people who are on public assistance after the baseball season, for the First Time Since the 1960s, no team will call the coliseum home. The oakland roots and oakland ballers have both explored playing at the coliseum. Both are in minor league divisions, which is, of course, much different than the teams that used to play there. This is all your memories and your own home. Everything that you worked so hard to build just gone. So i got all the kids and went downstairs into this room. The only room left standing, and just kind of huddled in the corner and it got really quiet and â– then really loud, and then everything was gone. Fema will be on the ground today in iowa. The white house says its ready to provide support as needed. More Severe Weather is expected to stretch into today as the memorial day weekend gets underway. For a look at weather closer to home, lets head to drew. Hey, amanda. Take you live to san jose this morning where it is already sunny out there. We do have current conditions. Temperatures are in the 50s 53 right now in san jose. In fact, most of us are starting our day in the low and mid 50s. Just a light breeze out there, the wind at five miles per hour. We have high humidity at this hour. Looking at the travel forecast, if you are flying today, perhaps southern california, were looking fine. Well find out today the names of the four falcon chicks living on kaos clocktower. There were four options suggested by the public. The first group, earth related. Aurora. Eclipse. Solstice. Equinox. Theres an online petition asking uc berkeley to change back some of its recently updated branding. The bee you see here in the middle is what now shows on the schools social media pages. In the past, its been a more stylized bee or a c for cal. You can see that on the right. Now. This is part of a larger rebranding. You can see the full new logo in the middle here. The school says the bee is only intended for small spaces where the full logo is hard to read. Officials say they made all of these changes to Better Connect the berkeley and cal identities. A lot of people say its just caused confusion and everyones like, oh, whats that bee . Ive never seen that before, versus if a cal script was there. People know thats uc berkeley. The school says more than a quarter of the people they surveyed in the bay area did not know that berkeley and cal were the same university. Now nationally, they say more than two thirds of people thought berkeley and cal were different institutions. I will say i am a part of those two thirds. Early on, i did not know that was the same school. I remember the moment that this happened. Oh, okay. Yeah, i a former place i was working, i was talking to my new colleague and he was telling me, oh yeah, i went to cal and i didnt know what that meant, and i pretended like i did. I was like, oh, cool. The great school. Yeah, yeah. Where is that . Wouldnt even be able to tell you what part of the state that was in, right . Youre like, its definitely in the state. I know that. Right. And then you realized, yeah, once i got here. But i feel like if youre not from here or you dont live here, i dont think that thats a known thing. Yeah. So okay, this is throwing me way back, but the only reason i know berkeley is because jessie spano from saved by the bell. Oh, yeah, that is where she wanted to go. And i knew berkeley. I just didnt know that cal equaled berkeley. Yeah, its admit that its confusing. It is confusing. Okay, but now we know theyre working on it. They see a problem, but people are big. Mad about it. They are. I mean, everyone just relax. Just take it easy. Its a Holiday
