Maritime NZ has accepted an enforceable undertaking from KiwiRail after an incident on the Kaiarahi Interislander ferry in April 2019. KiwiRail will spend $335,746 plus financial amends and costs to support the victim, a crew member who slipped in the hydraulics rooms, breaking his femur in two places. The injury required surgery, in which rods and screws were inserted to align the bone. The crew member was off work for 15 weeks and three days, said Maritime NZ central regional compliance manager Michael-Paul Abbott.
