Today Carly Fiorina toured the state fair. She took questions the majority of the time from wouldbe voters. She promised to defund planned parenthood and made light of a question regarding gender. I was asked on a National Television program whether a womans hormones prevented her from serving in the oval office. Can we think of a single instance in which a mans judgment might have been clouded by his hormones . Not just iowa. A critical time here in california. Pressing issues, including a possible gas tax. The state legislature returning to work today with a full plate. Our political analyst is with us in our newsroom. Larry, any movement on the big issues . We talked about the gas tax. Full plate is a good way to say it. Its hard to know but of the hundreds and there are still hundreds of bills in play here, there are a few that are really dicey and really juicy in terms of our pocket book. Here are a couple. Gas lo gasoline taxes. The gasoline taxes havent been increased since 1994. The State Government has 14 4 million in road bills. Greenhouse gasses, another one. Here the state Senate President has a bill that would increase Renewable Energy and reduce the use of gasoline by, get this, 50 . Look for the Petroleum Industry to fight this tooth and nail. And finally the tobacco issue, a bill would increase the tax on cigarettes by 2 a pack. California ranks 33rd in the tax category. I see the t word, there the tax word there. Governor brown very clear when he campaigned no new taxes unless the voters approved. Could they end up on the ballot . Remember george bush, no new taxes . Lets remember, a little civics lesson, it takes a twothirds vote in each chamber to increase taxes. Republicans really havent shown much interest in this, even though now they have a little bit more than one third of the members in each chambers. No assurance there that theyll be playing ball. The governor wouldnt be the first politician to go back on his word. If he does now, can he get away with this and whats the equity he has in the bank in terms of credibility . Browns going to be turned out in 2018. Its pretty clear he has a pretty firm idea on what should or should not be done in the remaining 18 months. So hell risk his current high standing with the public if it really means something of importance to him. If he signs those tax bills, hell do it. With no election to worry about, hes going to take whatever risks are necessary to achieve his goals. Count on it. Likely timeline on this regarding this gas tax and other taxes . Until september 11th, all things should down by september 11th. At that time if no bills are through, you got to wait till next year. All right, less than a month. Thank you, larry.
