KNTV Today In The Bay September 7, 2017
A look at radar, a lot of rain well to the north of us but still light showers here. Ill talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. Mike is now checking in on san jose. The speed jensers looking great, you like to see all the green. Typical patterns build in trivalley and hayward. San jose northbound 101 we see that typical slowing starting to kick in once again. But a crash northbound 880, im told its over on the should dwoernt see any slowing and i havent seen it. Over here we do have slowing and now were going to green to yellow. 26 minutes for the upper east shore freeway traveling west over towards the bay bridge toll plaza are where the metering lights are on and the toll plaza is full. Back to you. In our top story this morning the death toll is kroeg growing as
Hurricane Irma
moves closer to the florida coastline. Youre taking a live look at our satellite pictures this morning track track being the tax reforms current badge. The category five storm swept through the caribbean and slammed puerto rico overnight decimating towns and cities. Now were getting our first look at the damage left behind this morning. This is a scene of the tiny caribbean island of barbuda. The hurricane swept through the island with 185
Miles Per Hour
winds just destroying homes and causing so much extensive flooding. At least one death has been reported there. The prime ministerest mates the storm costs at least 150 million worth of damage. And this is new video into our newsroom from overnight showing irma slamming puerto rico early. Now, more than 1
Million People
lost power there. The eye wall which carries the most destructive winds didnt make landfall, but the island could face hours of intensive winds and up to 20 inches of pummelling rain. Heres where the situation stands at. Hour, the swoeshted press reporting the death toll has risen to ten. Military planes will be brought into some of the hardest hit areas bringing food and water. Hurricane is inspect expected to hit the british territory turks and caicos today. People will start to feel the effects of the storm most likely starting tomorrow night. We have
Team Coverage
of
Hurricane Irma
this morning. Meteorologist kari hall track the storms badge but first we want to thek in with today in the bays rick boone. Hes live in hayward showing us how utility crews are actually going to help people in florida as irma hits. Reporter just look at those pictures that you just showed moments ago of
Hurricane Irma
s path. Youve got feel for anyone in the path of that storm, especially for the residents of florida who are bracing right now for whats to come. And thats why right now it is packing day here at pg e, some 100 crew workers, nine from this facility here in hayward, are heading to florida. When they get on the ground, heres the game. Theyre going to be supporting the
Florida Power
workers after
Hurricane Irma
moves on. Heading to south florida will be pg e line workers,
Equipment Operators
and support staff. Theyll be flying to florida actually tomorrow but packing today. Theyll be bringing some equipment and theyll be using power trucks by
Florida Power
to do the repair work. As soon as they goat florida theyll be staging in a safe area and once everything calms down enough to go out and do that work theyll be working side by side with
Florida Power
and light getting the power restored. Reporter and this seasonality the first time that pg e crews have helped out or been on stand by during a disaster. Last year during
Hurricane Matthew
then were readied to assist
Florida Power
during that storm if needed. Now as of right now, speaking of another hurricane out there,
Hurricane Harvey
, pg e crews are not in houston right now because they havent received that request yet. But they say once they get it theyll head there as well. Were live in hayward, rick boone for today in the bay. Lets check in with meteorologist kari hall whos been tracking the storms path. We are going to see this storm unfortunately remaining a category five hurricane over the next several days. This storm has really held its own and even as it interacts with some of these islands over right now the
Dominican Republic
and hate tliiti we are still se this remain a very powerful category five hurricane. Wind speeds of 180
Miles Per Hour
. Now the forecast over the next several days keeps temperature just north of cuba and affecting parts of the bahamas as we go into friday night. But some of the rain bands will start to reach into florida as we talked about as early as friday night. And throughout the day on sunday, we are expecting it to make landfall as the possibility of a category four hurricane still very powerful and we are going to possibly still see some more shifts in this track but we have to keep in mind that this hurricane is about five to 600 miles wide so the swath of the damage will be very extensive as it moves off towards the north and then it could make landfall once again as a category one hurricane near savannah, georgia. So still going to have a very large area that will be impacted by this major hurricane over the next few days. There are two other hurricanes out there in the atlantic, ill talk more about that coming up a little bit later. Thanks so much, kari. 6 06 and stay up to date on
Hurricane Irma
by following us on social media. Kari has been tweeting updates all morning about the storm. All week long as well. You can follow us all at nbc bay area. Meantime, a menlo

Hurricane Harvey
damage. Did i some digging overnight. Speaking with the chief of the men low fire district, he says that the crew just returning from assisting victims of harvey in texas had a few days off, rehab before returning home. He says if fema calls, the team will be ready to head to florida to offer where help is needed. Now here at home 10 to sure safety, the department is operating using force packs. This requires all emergency kru members not helping well, the disaster area to come in and work. The fire chief says that home base is always the
First Priority
so they only send a certain amount of the departments 93member team to assist with the disaster area. New this morning,

Senate Judiciary committee answering questions about a neegt he and
Jared Kushner and
Paul Manafort had with a russian lawyer in june before the election. Emails about that meeting are indeed incriminating the emails offer to set up a meeting with russians who say they have incriminating evidence against
Hillary Clinton to influence the election. Then say kplies sitly th explic this is part of the support for
Donald Trumps campaign to which donald trump jr. Responds in the email, i love it. Now the emails werent leaked much to the etan nish menlt meant of everybody, he tweeted them out. We expect trump junior will return to the

It stayed well to the north of us moving away from the bay area and the spotty showers that weve seen this morning have been so light its been hard to be picked up on our radar but well be tracking that as our models still show that chance of rain through at least the noon hour. And mostly along the coast and in parts of north bay where we will see some of that rain moving through thanks to a very quickmoving cold front and some tropical moisture moving through our clouds will be rolling out as we go through the day. And as you check out that sevenday forecast, after this well be heating up, especially for the end of the weekend. But look sfor some mostly clear skies by this evening. Any rain that he will see will be measured in a few 100ths of an inch so not expecting really heavy downpours here. As we check out the sevenday forecast those showers moving in today and then it dries out and warms up for the end of the weekend. Check out
