Out of diablo, perhaps, the san ramone and dublin are tough cases here, you have to head down towards niles canyon or highway 24 for a longer reroute. Thank goodness the rest of the bay is a lighter traffic flow but here west 580 is a nightmare as youre traveling west off of that dublin interchange over to the scene of the crash now. Near those flashing lights is bob redell and he has more details on that crash. Reporter good morning. If you have to commute from the east bay into the San Francisco area or to oakland keep in mind chp has estimated its going to be another two and a half to three and a half hours before westbound 580 is shut down again because of this fatal big rig crash. You can see the Alameda County coroner just arrived to remove the body of the big rig driver who was unfortunately killed this morning. What happened earlier this morning, a car hits this big rig right here if you look to your right side of your screen causing the driver of this big rig to slam on his brakes. When he slammed on his brakes the driver of a second big rig that one over there slammed into the back of this gentlemans big rig and it is the driver of that big rig who unfortunately has passed away. The driver of the car and the driver of this big rig are okay. Now, if you look youre going to look now east, your head lights heading west, you can see that the interstate is shut down but if you look to your left side chp is letting traffic come in single file, getting off here at the eden canyon off ramp and getting back on at the eden canyon on ramp, but as you can see traffic is at a trickle. The estimated time for reopening fully reopening westbound 580, you are looking at 8 30, 9 30, that was at a minimum according to chp. Reporting live here in Castro Valley, bob redell, today in the bay. Now, make sure you stick with today in the bay for continuing coverage. Shots fired overnight in campbell. This happened near cyprus lane and highway 17. The shelter in place was just lifted within the last hour and a half. Today in the bays kris sanchez is live at the scene to explain what happened. Good morning, marcus and laura. It was a sleepless night for the folks who live in this neighborhood behind me in campbell. The good news is that that situation is now over, the bad news is that folks might have been rattled enough to stay awake. Here is how it started just before midnight. Shortly before midnight a neighbor called 911 saying they saw a stranger outside a home on cyprus avenue and that sounded like explosives or banging outside. When Campbell Police officers arrived at the spotted a suspect who ran from them, jumped some fences and turned and started shooting at those Police Officers. The initial contact with the subject resulted in about two or three shots being fired and over the next 10 to 15 minutes there were approximately 8 to 12 additional shots being fired. No shots were fired by any Police Officers, all the gunfire was by the subject. Now, as you heard the captain say no Police Officer was injured. As you also heard the captain say the officers did not fire back is a suspect. Out of concern for motorists on highway 17 Campbell Police shut down all but one lane of the highway, the chp did reopen that shortly after. Eventually officers took one man into custody. The order was lifted around the place we went on air around 4 30 this morning. The Campbell Police, chp all worked together to get that accused gunman into custody. I posted that full interview with the Campbell Police captain in case you want to listen to it if you were wondering what was happening in your neighborhood in campbell today. Kris sanchez, today in the bay. It is 6 05 right now. Happening today police in berkeley are bracing for protests ahead of conservative comment cater ben shapiros visit tonight. Were following breaking news out of sacramento right now. Three children have been found dead inside a West Sacramento apartment. Overnight authorities arrested a man married to the childrens mother. Investigators say officers were called to that apartment last night around 9 00. 33yearold roger hodges was arrested several hours later at a different location. Its not clear if hodges is the father of the children. Investigators say the mother license witnessed the killings and she was a victim of Domestic Violence you have to understand this woman is absolutely traumatized. Losing three children, i couldnt even imagine, and its very difficult and so we have to keep that in mind while this investigation is continuing. And the investigators have to think about that, what is her state of mind right now. And investigators havent said what happened to the childrens mother. Tragic there. Taking you live to washington, d. C. This morning where just minutes ago San Francisco where just minutes an nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer releasing a statement about what President Trump has been tweeting about this morning about the deal he reached with democrats last night. There was no final deal, we agree the president would support en slieng daca protections into the law but what remains to be negotiated about the details of Border Security. In a series of tweets early in morning the president says the deal never happened. The massive Border Security would have to be agreed to and in exchange for consent. Today in the bays tracie potts is live from washington this morning following all of this overnight. Good morning, tracie. Hi there. Good morning. After hearing from both sides maybe this is an issue of semantics. Was it a deal but not a final deal that one side is calling an agreement that the president is trying to clarify isnt a final agreement. The bottom line is there seems to be broad consensus to do something about these young immigrants who are already in the country allowing them to stay. There does seem to be consensus about providing some level of Border Security but not about funding the wall right now. No deal last night on daca. President trump tweets this morning. Promising the wall will continue to be built. Democrats say he agreed not to include money for the wall for now in exchange for other types of Border Security and a quick fix to protect young immigrants brought to this country illegally. There are 800,000 d. R. E. A. M. Ers who are hanging on this. Republicans not even at the table. The basic package we dont want to be determined by chuck and nancy. There are mixed reactions on President Trump working with the other side. Kudos, one republican tweeted. Another insists without the wall trump base is blown up, destroyed, irreparable, no promise is credible. The white house says excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to, but democrat chum Schumers Office tweeted that its not part of this agreement. Other topics on the menu, trade, temperature and taxes. The top House Republican promised to reach out to democrats on stacks reform. Were going to do it no matter what. A fix for daca, work to do on taxes and confusion about what actually happened behind closed doors. And both sides trying to clarify that this morning as the president reads down to survey that hurricane damage leaving political damage back here with his own party. We will be watching. Thank you. Watching the highways this morning mike inouye. 580 westbound eden canyon road has been a mess. A deadly crash. Let me show you a shot we normally show and i typically show, there is the dublin grade, easy drive. Not today, look, its basically stopped up making all the way back from the top of our shot in through the dublin interchange and back toward the auto mall. Your approach basically tassajara is where you start hitting the brake lights. The map will show you the deadly crash weve been continuing to show you. Barbara dell is on scene at eden canyon road and he showed us cars are getting off the freeway, trickling by the scene of two big rigs, another vehicle and also complicating the matter is there is a fuel leak of some sort. While the coroner is on scene and we typically take from the start of this two hours to clear up we do have this big backup that continues. There you see from our sky ranger overhead the scene of the lights closing westbound 580 and it will plan up from the top of the screen you see the flares and the backup continues back toward the dublin interchange and beyond. That is the worst backup for the day. The rest of traffic flows nicely as you look at this horrible backup. Kari, we will change topics or moods and talk about the rest of the bay as things get easier for the rest of the bay toward the weekend. As we go into this afternoon it will definitely be more comfortable. We do start out with clouds this morning as we take a live look outside in San Francisco. Thats coming up in the forecast in about five minutes. There is a live look at the crash blocking westbound 580 at eden canyon road. This is a deadly crash with an investigation and some sort of hazmat spill as well. This is very complicated. We will give you alternates and talk about time. T vehicles could soon see new regulations we re talking about companies 6 16. Apple showed how the phone sprays your face with invisible infrared light and compares that to the records stored inside the phone. Senator al franken of minnesota is asking this morning whether that record could be used in other ways, for instance, hes concerned apple could sell that data to retailers who could use the shape of your face to recognize you at a store and market to you. Theres absolutely no evidence apple has any plans to do this, but franken seems to be thinking ahead about what could happen. I know 580 a major accident there. A deadly crash and this is the bad news that i have for my department. We will bring you out there and show you whats going on. Folks, you are going to have to plan around this big backup. Right here from our sky ranger you see the flashing lights at the bottom and the head lights backed up all the way westbound 580 at eden canyon road. See folks squeezing by on the off ramp, they did open that off ramp to get off and back on the freeway. We have two big rigs that are wedged together and they would like to clear them from the roadway, but the coroner is there conducting the ske investigation of the deadly crash. They may have to off load one of the big rigs, that could add hours on to the backup. Here are the flares forcing you over to the right. We will show you on our map where were talking about waze times things out for you. We will look at this big difference, the blue route takes you through the crash off the dublin grade and into Castro Valley and that number at the bottom of your screen almost three hours, 2 hours and 58 minutes, thats coming out of san ramone and traveling over to fremont. If you go this way, 680 a little slowing through pleasanton, cut down to niles or mission boulevard were saving you almost two and a half hours. We are in the 30s for that map. Thats the difference for waze drivers through the area. You know that before you even leave the house. Make sure you join the team nbc bay area wazers and we will share that information. We will show you that backup once again that starts at tassajara. It goes almost nine miles now for that backup, a slower drive towards niles but also getting over toward highway 24, more folks will head there. The good news is as we approach the thursday commute its a much lighter commute so the south bay and peninsula are not having any problems. As were talking about the weekend were also talking about the weather. Whats going on . At least we do have nice very comfortable conditions as you get ready to head out on this thursday morning. Just seeing a few clouds across parts of the bay area and then look at these High Temperatures expected for today. In the south bay and gilroy we will be up to 75 degrees and 77 degrees in downtown san jose as we move over toward the east way, antioch up to 80 degrees, oakland 70 degrees and some breezy winds as well. Now, the clouds were seeing this morning will be clearing out and in the peninsula and san mateo expect a high of 70 degrees, mostly some 60s for San Francisco and the clouds rolling out of here by late morning, 75 today in sonoma. As you check out the sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen we will have several more days of weather like this with the clouds to start as youre getting ready to walk out the door to school or driving, it will be nice and mild and as recess kids will most likely need some long sleeves, it will be breezy with some times of sunshine and a cooler day overall. All across the bay area with mostly sunny skies as you go to pick them up from school. I want to show you those breezy winds. These arrows show the direction winds are coming from, moving on shore as we go throughout the day and our winds at about 10 to 15 miles an hour, at times up to 20 miles an hour. We contacted lowes and it refunded sharon the full cost of the refrigerator, a savings of more than 4,400. In a statement lowes said that it was going to apologize for the inconvenience mrs. Its been like that for quite some time this morning, it could be 10 00 before that roadway opens. Good morning. Thanks for joining us. Im laura garciacannon. And im marcus washington. I want to get straight to mike inouye tracking that commute. A deadly accident causing a lot of traffic problems. The sad news is that someone has died as a result of this crash. The unpleasant news is its caused all lanes to be closed for 580 westbound. Folks are moving off at the eden canyon road. Our sky ranger chopper is over scene and its showing the flashing lights, its going back about 8, maybe 9 miles back before you get to the dublin interchange, thats good the traffic jammed up from tassajara, folks are going south on 680 down towards niles or north over toward 24. You might know crow canyon, even dublin grade boulevard you think youre smart because of that. No, it is jammed up and barely moving past the scene as well. You will see that possibly on the frontage road, you see the other side of the traffic flow is jammed up right to the scene, spectator slowing, were telling you whats going on as you travel through the area drive carefully in that backup. Right at the scene is bob redell who has been gathering details. What do you have as the latest . Reporter good morning, mike. Within the past few moments the Coroners Office removed the body of the big rig driver who was consider you wished in his cab sadly on westbound 580. The big rigs are still here, they need to remove those and caltrans will also have to clean up the road of all the debris and the foodstuff thats spilled out of these trailers. Chp is estimating the time for reopening westbound 580 at eden canyon road in Castro Valley now at 10 00, well past the morning commute, something to keep in mind if youre commuting from the east bay into oakland or San Francisco. This accident happened early on this morning, a car was driving westbound when it hit this big right here to the right of you, two big rigs, this big rig hit by the car, it became disabled in this lane. The driver of the big rig and driver of the car was okay. About three to five minutes later the driver of the second big rig came and slammed into the back of the first big rig killing that driver. Chp believes that that driver of the second big rig did apply their brakes but that was not enough to stop from obviously colliding into the back of this big rig. That driver the dead driver sadly as i mentioned had been taken away. Youre looking now towards the east direction, you can see the head lights are heading westbound, you can see that the road is shut down, they are letting one lane of traffic through, its coming through at a trickle, theyre getting off here at the eden canyon off ramp, going down and getting right back on to the freeway at the other on ramp. There is not much traffic going through so the backup is tremendous and again chp estimating its not going to be until 10 00 this morning when westbound 580 is reopened. Reporting live here in Castro Valley, bob redell, today in the bay. The impact of that cab that you saw where the big rig driver sadly lost his life, tough to see. Thank you very much, bob. Make sure you stick with today in the bay for continuing coverage. We will continue to monitor this traffic impact throughout the morning. You can access our realtime traffic apps on our app and at nbcbayarea. Com. We want to switch gears and turn things over to meteorologist kari hall to get a look at our forecast for today. Coming up in just a few minutes i will have a look at some events going on around the bay area for this weekend, whether you will be staying here or hitting the road, i will have a look at that forecast coming up. At 6 34 all eyes will be on uc berkeley today as conservative comment cater ben shapiro comes to town this evening. The entire city of berkeley is bracing for this visit. Streets and buildings will be shut down at least three hours before shapiros speech at zellerbach hall. Berkeley officials are bracing for violent protests for good reason. There have been a number of protests that ended in Property Damage and arrest. Shapiro says nothing will keep him away from making this speech tonight. We also spoke to him and he said he spoke to one Exchange Student from london who says hes confused by the warning. Im sort of confused at what ive done to cause this, everyone is treating it like godzilla is coming. One of the main reasons i came here is because back in the 60s and 70s berkeley was this breeding ground and birth ground for free speech. At this and campus authorities sent out emails to students warning them about the possibility of violence and to stay out of the area. We are going to be on top of this story all day long with live reports in our evening newscast. For instant coverage head to our website nbcbayarea. Com. Happening today a historic step for bart. Hearing about home selling for over their asking price might seem like a dream come true its making things hard for buyers and sellers as well. Today in the bay krads his sa has the latest inventory numbers. There arent a lot of for sale signs right now. No, and they are up and gone before you can think about it. Here in campbell, for example, there are only 36 homes, singlefamily homes, for sale this week and the numbers for the entire county, they are not much better, they are about 40 lower than they were this week last year. Lets take a look at brandnew numbers i have this morning. In Santa Clara County to give you the perspective about 415 total homes, that including singlefamily homes, town homes and condos. There are only 900 for sale this week, that is a 43 drop over last year. Now, the realtor i talked with says that the low inventory puts both buyers and sellers in a tough position because sellers who could take advantage of this hot market, maybe make a little market, upsize or downsize, they are not selling their homes, theyre staying put because they are afraid they wont have something to buy once theyre done with that transaction. That puts the squeeze on buyers. If youre thinking the bubble will burst, things will get back to normal, our realtor says dont hold your breath. We dont see that happening. All of the economists are looking at the job market and all of our growth around here and how it seems unsustainable we dont foresee it going down. Reporter now, bay area wide singlefamily homes are in short supply. There are just 737 singlefamily homes in Santa Clara County, this over 1,000 in Alameda County, about 400 in San Mateo County and just 35 singlefamily homes for sale in San Francisco. Now, the realtor says that in a market like this you really do want to work with a professional. She says it sounds like a plug but its not. That a lot of times realtors know whats coming on the market before it hits the market and if you wait until you go to an open house its probably already sold at that point. So work with a realtor and dont wait to buy your dream home, she says. She says, just get in and start making some money building up equity. In campbell, kris sanchez, today in the bay. You cant even save it as fast as you need t a lot of cash buyers out there. We want to head over to mike inouye. He has been tracking that accident in the Castro Valley causing a big problem for commuters this morning. Good morning. Lets be frank about this, this is a huge problem for the traffic but first lets consider the fact that someone has died as a result of this crash. That is a tragedy. Presumably the person driving that truck, the second of two big rigs involved in a crash. There was smaller vehicle involved. The other people involved have been taken away for injuries. Part of the debris is the problem. These big rigs were loaded and one of them at least, perhaps both of them we hear may have to be offloaded with all that cargo. Thats whats going to take up to 10 00 a. M. Possibly until they can clear these westbound lanes. Our sky ranger shows the fire crew at the scene. The coroner has just left the scene after their investigation here as well. We will look at your maps and we have a huge backup because of that. Solid all the way down off of the dublin grade, up the dublin grade and back approaching has that a tassaja tassajara. Thankfully the rest of the bay is a lighter flow of traffic. Castro valley and approaching the y is the only big backup for the y. Thursdays and fridays approaching the weekend people tend to have a lighter flow of traffic anyway. Get an early jump on t too. A lot of different places will have nice weather this weekend. If youre sitting in that traffic youre probably thinking i cannot wait until this weekend. We have some events going on and also some beautiful weather headed our way. Looking at saturdays draft for the bay it will be 75 degrees, 68 degrees for the coast and the inland areas will also be comfortable with lower 80s on sunday even just a touch cooler for the interior valleys reaching 81 degrees and 67 degrees for the coast. If youre heading down to l. A. , no worries there, we will see mostly sunny skies, highs in the low 70s. I just replied to robert, he said he was going to the monterey jazz festival this weekend. If you let me know what youre going to do i will give you the heads up and the forecast for that location or that event. Thats been a big breaking news in the east bay. Also breaking news in the south bay, weve been following this morning, where shots were fired overnight in campbell and the ensuing search for a suspect shut down part of highway 1. Someone called police about a stranger along cyprus avenue and Police Arrived at the say the man started shooting at them and fled. The initial contact with the subject resulted in about two or three shots being fired and over the next 10 to 15 minutes there are approximately 8 to 12 additional shots being fired. No shots were fired by any Police Officers, all the gunfire was by the suspect. The suspect didnt hit the officers and they did not return fire, as you said, they eventually caught the person, reopened the highway which was actually closed as a precaution. 6 46. This morning through students in Washington State remain hospitalized after a School Shooting that left one of their classmates dead.
