Transcripts For KNTV Today In The Bay 20171207

So a cold start but a very nice afternoon. We will talk more about our temperatures and the wide range we will have over the next few days. Mike is tracking transit details. Especially for bart, outside station folks you have a delay out of fremont, about ten minutes, but thats tough in this colder weather. I just heard about this delay for train number 520 thats for our capital corridor line looking at out of oakland there is a 35 minute delay. There was something that held that train up from leaving, should be on its way again continuing to the end of its route. Thats just train 520 right now. Smoother drive on the roadways, you might as well drive through oakland with no major problems. We are looking to san jose with one crash just popped up, now over on the shoulder, quickly made it there northbound 101 at oakland road, that distraction might add to the build as we do have more traffic heading through the area so we will track that south bay commute. Right now Silicon Valley no real problems. Back to you. Were going to continue our wildfire coverage in just a moment but first a live look this morning from San Francisco overlooking the bay bridge. State lawmakers and transit officials are considering an idea to build a new bridge in the bay area. Today in the bays pete suratos is live on the peninsula side of the san mateo bridge this morning and, pete, when we talk about this new bridge what kind of impact are we talking about here really . Reporter good morning to you, marcus and laura. It all depends, if you do have a new bridge that could fix some of the traffic issues that we see here around the bay area, but i want to point out for our viewers who are watching right now this is simply an idea at this point thats being at least they are proposing it or at least proposed to residents last night at a caltrans meeting. We are talking about potentially a new bridge, its called the southern crossing, thats what caltrans is calling it and its being pushed by senator Dianne Feinstein along with congressman mark desaulnier. They want to build that new bridge between the san mateo bridge to the bay bridge. It would be funded by regional measure 3. If that sounds familiar that measure will be voted on next june and that will increase tolls if it passes it would increase tolls on all the bridges around the bay area and that would pay for transportation projects. Now, her concern here what she feels this would fix in the area is some of those traffic problems but our crews spoke to caltrans experts at this meeting last night and they dont think that it will fix it as fast as she thinks it would. It stores a lot of cars but they will still have to go through the heavy traffic on the peninsula or on 880 on the other side. Now, another idea that was proposed last night is adding carpool lanes or express lanes to 101 south and that would be between 380 to whipple road and redwood city. Of course, if you are a solo driver driving by yourself you would have to pay to use those express lanes. Now, back to this bridge idea. This would be a multibillion dollar project so we are a ways away from this actually happening but when it comes to those express lanes they are close to actually making that happen. If its approved they could begin construction on that as early as may of 2019. We are live in san mateo, pete suratos for today in the bay. Continuing coverage of the raging Southern California wildfires now this morning. Taking a live look from our nbc chopper over the thomas fire burning in Ventura County. Hopefully we are trying to get that. There we go. Yeah, look at that. A stretch of highway 101 is actually close this had morning because the fire is burning so close to the freeway. It is happening in la conchita between ventura and Santa Barbara. Here is a look at what things are like on the ground. You can see the fire through the trees right now. These are live pictures. Right now there are four significant fires burning in sourn california. These are the significant ones with little to no containment. The largest fire is the one weve been talking about a lot the thomas fire in Ventura County. Fire officials are also battling the rye fire, this is near Santa Clarita and the creek fire near sylmar. The skirball fire is near the getty center, one that may that a lot of people have been worried about as it gets closer to that museum with precious and priceless art. The thomas fire has now burned 90,000 acres, thats about three times the size of San Francisco. The creek fire near sylmar has burned more than 12,000 acres this morning, the rye hire is at 7,000 acres and the skirball fire that weve been watching has burned 475 acres. The big concern today is the extreme wind conditions in Southern California. In fact, take a look at this map, see that purple area there, a purple flag warning is in effect today for most of Southern California covering ventura, los angeles, orange and san diego counties. That means there is an extreme threat for wildfires and if a fire starts, it would be considered uncontrollable and just think we already have all of these raging right now. Thats why we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. Kari, when people hear that purple they are not sure what that means. I had to learn about what that was. They have never had it before. They have never had one before. I had to change the clrs on my map, too. This is issued by the santa ana wildfire threat index and we are expecting Hurricane Force winds here. That means that those gusts to get over 75 miles per hour, humidity down to only about 5 to 15 and as you mentioned, any wildfire that we could see spreading will be uncontrollable. There will be nothing they can do about it. I want to show you the wind speed forecast for today, it will be the strongest wind event we have had so far this season and this is also the longest santa anna wind event we have had. The winds sustained will be 25 to 35 miles an hour and higher gusts possible throughout the day as well as the next several days. This will be something that needs to be monitored and we will be on top of all of this. Very dry conditions and the most critical we have ever seen here in this area. We will continue to watch those conditions as they continue to change. We have Team Coverage of the Southern California wildfires, thousand thos of people have been forced to evacuate their homes. Today in the bays jinah kim is in ventura this morning where dozens of homes have already been destroyed in the thomas fire. Good morning, jinah. Reporter good morning. Thats right, the National Weather service issuing some of the harshest language that it could possibly provide overnight saying to expect, quote, extremely critical fire weather conditions that could likely cause rapid fire spread here in Southern California. We are in day four of this devastation that you see around me and we still cant seem to catch a break. The 50 to 80 mile an hour gusts that drove the flames across Southern California this week returned this morning when its this bad, fire officials say, theres practically nothing they can do. Now the big challenge of course is the winds are back up, a lot of the area of this fire is in steep and inaccessible areas, unaccessible terrain that hasnt burned in decades if not longer. Reporter the latest fire created a wall of flames along the 405 freeway just as the morning commute got under way yesterday. I can feel the heat. Reporter it shut down the freeway near ucla for hours making the already notorious traffic conditions even worse. It damaged or destroyed some 11 structures including at least four homes in belair, home to l. A. s millionaires and celebrities. The biggest of the four fires burning in Southern California is the thomas fire in Ventura County which now threatens to grow he into santa after bra county home to major wineries and universities. In all more than 100,000 acres have burned, some 200,000 people remain evacuated and about 200 homes and buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Devastated. Its overwhelming. Like everyone else, we just know that some day it will be it will be restored. Reporter today we will see summerlike conditions returning with single digit humidity and near 80 degree temperatures. And fire officials said that if they do indeed see those unmanageable conditions that are predicted for today they may have to be forced to switch their position from fighting the fire to evacuations only. Back to you. Tough situation there. Thank you. Nbc bay areas Jodi Hernandez is in Southern California for us. She continues to post new videos on her Facebook Page including live reports. I will break it down and have a look at todays temperature friend for fremont coming up and mike is still tracking the crash in san jose. For one of the few spots where we see slowing on these maps, look at your screen, south bay over in the east bay and trivalley and of course the bay bridge. Those are the three areas where we have the slower sensors. North 101 has not seen any real appreciable impact. The crash is over on the shoulder and the slowing just before you get to 680 heading up toward oakland road but starts to improve before you approach the crash there. Looking at a slower drive for hayward southbound 880, pleasanton and also this crash isabelle, isabelle has reopened and the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza slowing just off the berkeley curve to be expected.
