So a cold start but a very nice afternoon. We will talk more about our temperatures and the wide range we will have over the next few days. Mike is tracking transit details. Especially for bart, outside station folks you have a delay out of fremont, about ten minutes, but thats tough in this colder weather. I just heard about this delay for train number 520 thats for our capital corridor line looking at out of oakland there is a 35 minute delay. There was something that held that train up from leaving, should be on its way again continuing to the end of its route. Thats just train 520 right now. Smoother drive on the roadways, you might as well drive through oakland with no major problems. We are looking to san jose with one crash just popped up, now over on the shoulder, quickly made it there northbound 101 at oakland road, that distraction might add to the build as we do have more traffic heading through the area so we will track that south bay commute. Right now Silicon Valley no real problems. Back to you. Were going to continue our wildfire coverage in just a moment but first a live look this morning from San Francisco overlooking the bay bridge. State lawmakers and transit officials are considering an idea to build a new bridge in the bay area. Today in the bays pete suratos is live on the peninsula side of the san mateo bridge this morning and, pete, when we talk about this new bridge what kind of impact are we talking about here really . Reporter good morning to you, marcus and laura. It all depends, if you do have a new bridge that could fix some of the traffic issues that we see here around the bay area, but i want to point out for our viewers who are watching right now this is simply an idea at this point thats being at least they are proposing it or at least proposed to residents last night at a caltrans meeting. We are talking about potentially a new bridge, its called the southern crossing, thats what caltrans is calling it and its being pushed by senator Dianne Feinstein along with congressman mark desaulnier. They want to build that new bridge between the san mateo bridge to the bay bridge. It would be funded by regional measure 3. If that sounds familiar that measure will be voted on next june and that will increase tolls if it passes it would increase tolls on all the bridges around the bay area and that would pay for transportation projects. Now, her concern here what she feels this would fix in the area is some of those traffic problems but our crews spoke to caltrans experts at this meeting last night and they dont think that it will fix it as fast as she thinks it would. It stores a lot of cars but they will still have to go through the heavy traffic on the peninsula or on 880 on the other side. Now, another idea that was proposed last night is adding carpool lanes or express lanes to 101 south and that would be between 380 to whipple road and redwood city. Of course, if you are a solo driver driving by yourself you would have to pay to use those express lanes. Now, back to this bridge idea. This would be a multibillion dollar project so we are a ways away from this actually happening but when it comes to those express lanes they are close to actually making that happen. If its approved they could begin construction on that as early as may of 2019. We are live in san mateo, pete suratos for today in the bay. Continuing coverage of the raging Southern California wildfires now this morning. Taking a live look from our nbc chopper over the thomas fire burning in Ventura County. Hopefully we are trying to get that. There we go. Yeah, look at that. A stretch of highway 101 is actually close this had morning because the fire is burning so close to the freeway. It is happening in la conchita between ventura and Santa Barbara. Here is a look at what things are like on the ground. You can see the fire through the trees right now. These are live pictures. Right now there are four significant fires burning in sourn california. These are the significant ones with little to no containment. The largest fire is the one weve been talking about a lot the thomas fire in Ventura County. Fire officials are also battling the rye fire, this is near Santa Clarita and the creek fire near sylmar. The skirball fire is near the getty center, one that may that a lot of people have been worried about as it gets closer to that museum with precious and priceless art. The thomas fire has now burned 90,000 acres, thats about three times the size of San Francisco. The creek fire near sylmar has burned more than 12,000 acres this morning, the rye hire is at 7,000 acres and the skirball fire that weve been watching has burned 475 acres. The big concern today is the extreme wind conditions in Southern California. In fact, take a look at this map, see that purple area there, a purple flag warning is in effect today for most of Southern California covering ventura, los angeles, orange and san diego counties. That means there is an extreme threat for wildfires and if a fire starts, it would be considered uncontrollable and just think we already have all of these raging right now. Thats why we want to bring in meteorologist kari hall. Kari, when people hear that purple they are not sure what that means. I had to learn about what that was. They have never had it before. They have never had one before. I had to change the clrs on my map, too. This is issued by the santa ana wildfire threat index and we are expecting Hurricane Force winds here. That means that those gusts to get over 75 miles per hour, humidity down to only about 5 to 15 and as you mentioned, any wildfire that we could see spreading will be uncontrollable. There will be nothing they can do about it. I want to show you the wind speed forecast for today, it will be the strongest wind event we have had so far this season and this is also the longest santa anna wind event we have had. The winds sustained will be 25 to 35 miles an hour and higher gusts possible throughout the day as well as the next several days. This will be something that needs to be monitored and we will be on top of all of this. Very dry conditions and the most critical we have ever seen here in this area. We will continue to watch those conditions as they continue to change. We have Team Coverage of the Southern California wildfires, thousand thos of people have been forced to evacuate their homes. Today in the bays jinah kim is in ventura this morning where dozens of homes have already been destroyed in the thomas fire. Good morning, jinah. Reporter good morning. Thats right, the National Weather service issuing some of the harshest language that it could possibly provide overnight saying to expect, quote, extremely critical fire weather conditions that could likely cause rapid fire spread here in Southern California. We are in day four of this devastation that you see around me and we still cant seem to catch a break. The 50 to 80 mile an hour gusts that drove the flames across Southern California this week returned this morning when its this bad, fire officials say, theres practically nothing they can do. Now the big challenge of course is the winds are back up, a lot of the area of this fire is in steep and inaccessible areas, unaccessible terrain that hasnt burned in decades if not longer. Reporter the latest fire created a wall of flames along the 405 freeway just as the morning commute got under way yesterday. I can feel the heat. Reporter it shut down the freeway near ucla for hours making the already notorious traffic conditions even worse. It damaged or destroyed some 11 structures including at least four homes in belair, home to l. A. s millionaires and celebrities. The biggest of the four fires burning in Southern California is the thomas fire in Ventura County which now threatens to grow he into santa after bra county home to major wineries and universities. In all more than 100,000 acres have burned, some 200,000 people remain evacuated and about 200 homes and buildings have been damaged or destroyed. Devastated. Its overwhelming. Like everyone else, we just know that some day it will be it will be restored. Reporter today we will see summerlike conditions returning with single digit humidity and near 80 degree temperatures. And fire officials said that if they do indeed see those unmanageable conditions that are predicted for today they may have to be forced to switch their position from fighting the fire to evacuations only. Back to you. Tough situation there. Thank you. Nbc bay areas Jodi Hernandez is in Southern California for us. She continues to post new videos on her Facebook Page including live reports. This is some of the video that she took in ojai. You can follow her Jodi Hernandez tv. I will break it down and have a look at todays temperature friend for fremont coming up and mike is still tracking the crash in san jose. For one of the few spots where we see slowing on these maps, look at your screen, south bay over in the east bay and trivalley and of course the bay bridge. Those are the three areas where we have the slower sensors. North 101 has not seen any real appreciable impact. The crash is over on the shoulder and the slowing just before you get to 680 heading up toward oakland road but starts to improve before you approach the crash there. Looking at a slower drive for hayward southbound 880, pleasanton and also this crash isabelle, isabelle has reopened and the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza slowing just off the berkeley curve to be expected. He is 36yearold kevin cole who was arrested on several counts of molestation or annoying a child under the age of 18. Cole was hired by south valley dance arts to work on the lights and the sounds for their production of the nutcracker here at this theater on friday night. This is video from two years ago of south valley dance arts nutcracker performance. Back then you can see it is a pretty elaborate affair. Now, at fridays production two young dancers say cole put his hands on their private parts during costume changes. Morgan Hill Police Say he was never supposed to have contact with those performers because he was working on the technical side of the production. According to Morgan Hill Police several dance saw cole touching the dancers and told him to stop immediately and called police. Morgan Hill Police Say cole also worked with south valley ballet, hip hop craze, music in notion, Charter School of morgan hill and as we just mentioned the morgan hill unified School District. Michelle moyer who is the director of music in motion says she remembers cole working on one of their productions back in 201 2016. I have parents everywhere, so none of their kids would have ever been in a situation where they would have been with him. Reporter Morgan Hill Police want parents to talk with their kids and if they had inappropriate contact with kevin cole to give police a call. You can see this blue sign here behind me, this was not here last night, it says safe zone. So clearly someone trying to reassure the children that it is a safe zone, though it wasnt a safe zone on friday night. Again, you can find that list of other dance and Theater Companies that he worked with, plus the morgan hill unified School District where he was a theater tech and also substitute teacher in the last year, all of this is in my twitter feed and on my Facebook Page. In morgan hill, kris sanchez, today in the bay. A lot of people need to be aware of that. Thank you very much. Back to the breaking news that were covering out of San Francisco this morning, were just getting new images from a deadly scene. Were just getting word at least one person is dead after a Carbon Monoxide incident in San Franciscos Bernal Heights neighborhood. It happened at a residents on moultry street north of court land avenue. We launched nbc sky ranger as well and have a crew headed to the scene. These pictures coming from the San FranciscoFire Department this morning. You know, its very, very cold nights over the bay area, but Carbon Monoxide is of course a certain concern. You should have a detector in your home. We hope to get more information. We know at least six people were exposed this morning. Now to oakland where city workers are preparing for a strike on the 3rd day. Thousands of nonknowledge workers are pushing for higher wages and improving working conditions. The mayor says that this strike is unlawful since both sides are actively negotiating and there is no impasse. Silicon valley of course we know very competitive place, just yesterday were telling you about the race to be the best place to work. This morning a competition of an entirely different kind, scott. Anytime you want to jump in, because we know you are a very good singer, you sang the national anthem. Its an a capella competition in Silicon Valley, the fifth annual Silicon Valley a capella, they call it techapella takes place today. It started as a group of singing programest over at google but those employees moved over to facebook and then it was on, it was a battle for the best. Teams today including the air bnbeats, the twitter song birds and googapella, we will have more on the today show at 7 00. The latest numbers on housing out of the south bay, they say in Santa Clara County there are half as many houses for sale compared to a year ago. With very little supply price has gone up. Median price of a home in Santa Clara County is now 1,125,000. One expert told the mercury news home buyers are lining up like they are in front of an apple store. The wall street journal says anheuserbusch will buy 40 tesla trucks, these trucks are electric power and can largely drive themselves. This is not the beer companys first try as automated trucks. You remember last fall anheuserbusch budweisers Parent Company made a delivery using a truck trolled by otto a Company Owned by uber. Lyft says it will offer rides in automated cars in boston. You get one at random when you order a ride. Theyve got a deal with googles wamo and ford. Lyft will offer rides here in San Francisco soon. Ive ridden in automated cars as they make that slow progress around residential streets. The other thing i caught a ride in a robot car on 101 at full highway speeds. These are engineers from ia motive in Mountain View in an automated prius, the car just driving itself. How did it feel . It felt totally normal. I thought i was going to be concerned but then again we have already seen this with like the Adaptive Cruise control thats in my car where the car wont let me hit the car in front of it and the automatic parking and stuff. Did you feel safer because it looked like they had a backup driver . They have a guy waiting there, they have another guy on a computer. They are not to the point where its just like, yeah, jump in. Then i want to see how you feel. All right. A lot of americans planning on giving experiences instead of concrete gifts this season. Thats according to the npd group. 40 of americans plan to gift experiences like maybe concert tickets, spa treatments, wine tastings. About 7 will give a subscription box or service as a gift. What do you think of that . I like it. Yeah . Yeah, i like it. You know it will fit. It will fit, yeah. Its food, it will fit in my mouth. Then nothing else will fit. Thats right. So maybe you want to head out for a jog this morning and get in on some of the activities before the day gets started. Now its going to be cold out there as you head out the door. Take a look at these temperatures, trivalley only at 38 degrees and its 39 in the peninsula and the south bay, it is cold. Even in San Francisco 49 degrees and some frosty conditions in the north bay, some spots dipping below freezing. Sevenday forecast now up at the bottom of the screen. Come on over and take a look because we will have some warm weather over the next several days. We are still going to be warm today, East San Jose up to 70 degrees, cupertino 69 degrees, east bay looking at some upper 60s as well, concord 68 degrees, also 68 in fremont, san mateo 65 degrees, 65 in the Mission District today, 65 in the outer sunset, mill valley 63 degrees and novato expect a high of 67. We talked about going jogging and its going to be a cold start, extra layers for the Early Morning hours, but then later on today you can go out for a jog with nothing but shorts and a tshirt on. Still have a very unusual weather pattern setup here, dry conditions, the stubborn area of High Pressure is not going to move and we will keep it dry and warm over the next several days. As we get a look at San Francisco mid 60s today and tomorrow and we will have more of that even into next week. Not a drp of rain in the forecast. Very unusual for early december. Mike, you are starting out with the lights at the bay bridge. We have the metering lights so that causes these head lights and brake lights behind me, but these flashing lights that was one concern. Now, these its just because of the oversized load, traditionally we have seen these trailers go through the area, i will track it to make sure it gets through the toll plaza without incident. I saw flashing lights away eastbound toward the berkeley curve. The slowing in your commute direction getting in towards this area, no problems, just over a half hour getting here through the berkeley curve backup. A crash and some debris may still be in lanes. Chp will give an update. The rest of the bay moves very slowly. Back to you. 6 24 coming up next on today in the bay staying safe on the roads, we will break down the latest crash test results and what auto brands came out on top when it comes to safety. It is. When i mean action by the chp reports i guess you should clarify. Looking over to the south bay, thats where we have a number of reports over the last few minutes over the last 20 i should say. The most recent issue and the one with the most impact is a crash on the shoulder north 101 at mckee. Oakland road is the first we reported and a disabled vehicle by 880, they are all out the lanes, minor distraction, minor additional slowing. Its not bad. 101, 87, 85 and most recently the last five minutes have seen slowing. Light for the trivalley and east way. Your arrows showing you traffic feeding off of 580, more slowing from hayward down toward union city for the nimitz. Under 45 minutes from the highway 4 to the bay bridge toll plaza. Oversized trucks getting through the toll plaza, no problems getting there down the east shore or berkeley curve. Back to you. No problems there, but we do have some in San Francisco this morning, breaking news that were covering, were just getting word at least one person has died after a Carbon Monoxide incident in the Bernal Heights neighborhood. We know one person has died. We dont know the exact cause of the poisoning the exact course. We are just assuming because of the cold weather we have had across the bay area, but we hope to gain more information as the day progresses. It is 6 33. Back to our wildfire coverage as well this morning. Live pictures from the ground in Ventura County. Look at that wall of smoke. Overnight new evacuations were ordered as the fire moved into the la conchita area. Right now a second of highway 1 is closed down auto between Ventura County and Santa Barbara. Keep that in mind if youre traveling that area. Thousands of people have been forced to flee from their homes. The thomas fire is one of the four major fires burning in Southern California at this hour. We are keeping a close eye on the rye as well as the skirball fire and the creek fire. The major concern this morning those winds. The National Weather service has issued the strongest possible warning for wildfire conditions today. That is a pushl flag warning, its never been issued in Southern California. Experts are predicting near Hurricane Force winds which could fuel those flames making the fires that are already burning uncontrollable. The largest of the fires is the thomas fire, it has burned 90,000 acres and more than 200,000 people across Southern California have been evacuated. 200,000 people. Tier have little to no containment on those fires. Both ucla and cal state north ridge have canceled classes because of the nearby wildfires. New video to show you this morning, a daring act of kindness by an evacuee. Look at him, hes trying to save a bunny rabbit who was rushing into that burning brush. That rescuer he eventually captures that bunny and particulars it carrying the animal to safety. We will have continuing coverage coming up on the today show this morning, starts right after today in the bay at 7 00. Expanding bart into the south bay, the bart board is meeting today to talk about building a tunnel under san jose. Today in the bays bob redell is live in san jose this morning with information that we could learn from todays meeting. Good morning, bob. Reporter good morning, marcus. When barts board of directors meets in a couple of hours they are expected to address how to connect the future berryessa station which as you can see behind me is still under construction in san jose with the other planned bart stations in Silicon Valley. Were putting this map up on the tv screen for you, you can see bart will be extending another six miles into Silicon Valley with stops at alum rock, downtown san jose, santa clara. When it goes downtown the tracks must tunnel underground. The question is should the tunnel be a single or double bore. The Valley Transportation Authority which is leading this project wants it to be single bore, but according to the mercury news there are concerns about fire and safety. The paper reporting that the vta is now asking for another three months to finish design for 45 foot diameter single botherre tunnel. An issue to be addressed in todays meeting. The light rail agency has favored single bore design for a number of reasons, it would only take three years two months to complete versus four years for the two by two side tunnel, thats double bore, and it would also be 50 million cheaper. Now, the extension in san jose and santa clara expected to be completed by 2026 at a cost of just under 5 billion. The new milpitas and berryessa bart station behind me those are expected to be opening in about seven months in june. Reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, today in the bay. For the second time this year our clearly two year investigation into the misuse of School Officers was just honored with one of broadcast journalisms most prestigious awards. Today they were announced they were the recipients of the alfred i dupont columbia award. Nbc bay area is one of five local stations in the country taking home the prize. This comes on the heel of the peabody award they won earlier this year. The investigation exposed serious issues with the use of Police Officers on School Campuses and found students of color and students with disabilities dis appropriatelily being arrested at school. The reporting led to major policy changes in the bay area affecting near 70,000 students and a proposed state law that would allow schools to outline when officers should and should not get involved on campus. The series captured the attention of the Obama Administration which sent a letter to every school urging them to stop relying on Police Officers. Its really congratulations. Were proud of them. Is that okay to say, mike . Im perfectly fine with that. He is one of those guys, a dogged reporter, gets that information you need. Great guy as well. We are looking over here and congratulations to the bay area you are looking at a pretty Pleasant Drive right now as we do look over here we do have a new crash. Because its friday eve. It is. Thats the way we like to refer to today. We are just going to talk about the weekend, the nice weather that continues although we do need some rain. I guess we can try to enjoy the sunshine while its here. Temperatures will reach into the low to mid 60s and also the upper 60s for the inland areas. On sunday more of the same, no changes here, mostly sunny skies but we will have some cold mornings. Also some cold nights. If you are going out to the napa lighted art festival this kicking off on this saturday downtown napa, starts at 5 00, it will be at 59 degrees, you do need to wear some layers, look how cold it gets, dropping down into the lower 40s. Sounds like nice possibilities for the weekend. Coming up next on today in the bay, california is about to see major new laws take effect. The changes for buses that could impact your commute. Plus senator al franken this morning expected on the senate floor. Will he step down . We will take a look coming up. We are following the markets this morning as we always do here on today in the bay. Take a look as you can see the dow is up five points right there, nasdaq opened higher after broad com earnings beat estimates. Rest of the market traded slightly lower as investors turned their sights to washington. The time now 6 41. It is 6 44 right now on this friday eve and we take a live look outside at the setup for christmas in the park. This starts at 9 00 this morning and it will be a nice day to check it out, but a cool start, driving from Santa Theresa to downtown san jose it will be in the upper 50s, 67 degrees at 2 00, its going to be a warm one, especially for this time of year. We will talk about if this continues into the weekend forecast and whats ahead, thats coming up in about five minutes. And its travel time at the top getting longer here, westbound 80 there is a crash right around el portal, we are talking about what you will need to know if youre heading from the east bay over towards San Francisco. Its quarter to 7 00 right now. Today in the bay is tracking New California laws for 2018. If you plan on taking a grip on a gray pound bus in the new year you will need to buckle up. The law is inspired by the gray house bus crash in san jose where two people were killed. It was tragic, happened last year on highway 101 at the highway 85 interchange. Last of reflective warning markers on the roadway was flamed. Under the new law drivers and passengers can be fined 20 for the first offense of not wearing a seat belt, 50 for repeat offenders. The president will likely come under fire from senator al franken this morning. Scott mcgrew, franken will speak on the senate floor just a few hours from now. Thats right, good morning. We do expect franken will announce he is resigning from the senate. We are not sure of that, but thats our best guess. We also expect franken will demand the same of donald trump. A total of seven with em have said franken kissed them or otherwise treated them inappropriately more than 15 women have said the same of President Trump. Frankens spokesperson connected a Minnesota Public Radio report last night that said for sure franken was going to step down saying he was discussing it with family. Senator franken will take to the floor at 8 45 california time. Meanwhile, the tax cuts both the house and the senate have passed bills, now the two sides must reconcile those differences in those bills. Ideally before january 1st, the new tax year. They are in a hurry. Im thinking of checking out some of those holiday festivities, some of the lights going on around the bay area. Here is a live look outside in San Francisco, sevenday forecast coming up at the bottom of the screen. More of those warm afternoons on the bay, check out the south bay. This is where we begin, some upper 30s right now, livermore only 38 degrees, 39 in san jose and palo alto, 33 degrees in santa rosa and morgan hill only at 36 degrees. With this cold start look at how warm it will be later on today. With all of the wide ranging temperatures that we have had you do have to make sure youre prepared. Were preparing for more dry weather. Here is a look at whats happening right now, we see the clouds a very unusual trend here. Normally we have more of a horizontal shape to our clouds and bringing in some rain for this time of year, but this High Pressure is blocking it and it will keep it dry and also quite windy for Southern California where we have had dry conditions. Checking out the Drought Monitor just updated this morning, increases at least the abnormally dry conditions for Southern California, the area we are seeing still a moderate drought going on, as we bring it into the bay area we still have not seen an increase in our drought level so as far as rain we are almost close to where we should be for this time of year because of some early season rain, but there is no more rain in this forecast as we go through the next seven days. Hopefully we will see a change in this pattern but we do still have that stubborn ridge. If we get a shift in that we will get a shift in our rain chances as we head over to mike a new crash in dublin. Any crash could cause a shift in the commute. A live shot we see traffic moving smoothly past the auto mall signs, right behind that sign i saw flashing lights for five minutes. The crash west 580 after you get past tassajara. Looks like things might be moving nor smoothly. Overall the trivalley really light. So the east bay. Hayward, southbound, 880 slows towar. Crashes towards san jose affected 101, then moved quickly towards the shoulder. As we travel to the upper east shore freeway we still have this crash westbound 80, this may be debris near el portal but our waze system shows you the camp son. We are looking over towards waze with a smooth drive and looking at just an hour and 27 minutes if youre coming across the bay, this is a different view of your map will show you that traffic flows smoothly. Your waze will look a little differently because it will be on your phone and its not the broadcaster version. But it goes with you wherever you need.
