KNTV Today In The Bay January 23, 2018

Coast. So that 7. 9 magnitude earthquake was at 1 31 in the morning and that caused some waves underwater to start to move. So as that is that watch is issued, here is how you should prepare. You should make sure that you are tied in and know exactly whats going on, keep the tv on nbc bay area. If you do have to leave, make sure that your smartphone is on nbcbayarea. Com or you have the app. And then you should also make sure that you know those Evacuation Routes and plan to leave with your family. Make sure that everyone knows exactly whats going on. Then if a tsunami watch is issued you should pack your valuables and Important Documents and its unclear at that time when you would be able to return. So just make sure you have everything you need spatial in the coastline and also in San Francisco, but we do not have the tsunami watch, but thats something we will continue to monitor as the day goes along. Thats good advice. We should all prepare for an earthquake, but the watch has been called off this morning. Our Team Coverage continues with today in the bays pete suratos he is live in San Francisco with a warning for people to really continue to stay away from the water. Reporter good morning, laura. Yeah, we just spoke to the department of Emergency Management here in San Francisco, a spokesperson that weve talked to and they said they are still telling people to stay away from the coastline for at least the next 12 hours despite the fact that that tsunami watch was canceled. Here he is moments ago explaining the importance of staying away from the coastline because of those dangerous currents. As of 4 00 a. M. This morning the tsunami watch was canceled for the u. S. West coast and that including San Francisco, however, you know, theres always the possibility of dangerous currents in the water even though the watch has been canceled. So its advisable that you stay out of the water at least for the next 12 hours. In the event there is some dangerous currents out there that, you know, you can get in trouble in if you are in the water. Reporter so i want to point out that includes shoreline areas, marinas and harbors. We were at the marina green for our last live report, that would be one of those areas considered to be in that tsunami zone, but you see that he says there to stay away from the coastline for at least the next 12 hours and an important note, he said if a tsunami were ever to hit to always go inland. Thats an important piece of information he wanted to share with our viewers. Were live in San Francisco, pete suratos, for today in the bay. Certainly helpful information there, pete. We want to continue with that today in the bays bob redell is live in santa cruz this morning to show us the conditions there. Certainly the current thing that a lot of people were talking about. Reporter good morning, marcus. The number of people who live on these boats behind me in the Santa Cruz Harbor you have to imagine they are very relieved this morning because they were awakened by Harbor Patrol officers overnight to let them know that this tsunami watch was in effect and that they might have to evacuate. Fortunately as weve been reporting that watch has been lifted so these people are safe here in the harbor. This is something that people here take very seriously because of what happened several years ago back in 2011, you will recall that japan earthquake, the 9. 0 magnitude earthquake off the shores of japan that created a large tsunami that destroyed parts of japan and had a huge impact here on the west coast in the Santa Cruz Harbor, that wave came in, it sunk 17 vessels, damaged many more and estimated it caused around 17 million at least in damage to the infrastructure. So again, people here will remember that, know that this can happen here even if the earthquake is hundreds of miles away like it was overnight in alaska. Reiterating what the San Francisco department of Emergency Services was saying, we spoke with the National Weather service out of monterey, this he said there is still a chance that the bay area, the Northern California coastline could experience some sort of tsunami experience, and im quoting them on that, and were talking, again, about stronger than usual currents. Something to keep in mind if youre swimming out in the ocean or if you are on a small boat or a kayak. Reporting live here in santa cruz, bob redell, today in the bay. San francisco telling people to stay away from the coastline areas until about 5 00 today. Big reminder for everyone along those areas today. Now, as we mentioned thousands of people evacuated from their homes in alaska after that earthquake. Today in the bays kris sanchez is live at the usgs this morning in menlo park, updating us on those new updates that youre getting, kris. A lot of things could change minute by minute. Reporter thats right. Things happened very fast, marcus. We know this is a very powerful earthquake, a 7. 9, but luckily that tsunami threat is now averted for us here and also in alaska. But here is how the usgs described what that earthquake actually felt like and how it happened. The 7. 9 occurred as a result of a strike slip faulting at its location, the pacific plate con verging with the north america plate. It is a sideways movement kind of like what we saw along the hayward fault, what we saw in napa a few years ago, also along the an andreas fault. It was Strong Enough to trigger a tsunami warning for parts of alaska, the most serious kind of tsunami advisory. This is a line of people taking that sear seriously, evacuating kodiak alaska by car. Kodiak island is south of anchorage so getting up to Higher Ground quickly was critical for those folks. It seemed pretty orderly, but the folks were rattled. I got dressed and came out to my living room and i have a great view of downtown and, you know, all. Gb;hahe traffic goes y house on the evacuation road up to the high school, im two block358jaz the high school. I was watching all thet n peopl walk. From downtown and coming up and walking across the street. Some cars werent even slowing down to stop to let them pass. This morning on twitter i posted the difference between a warning, a watch and advisory so you can familiarize yourself because the next time it might not be a drill for us. I also posted what the usgs describes as that strike slip if you want to find out more about that. A lot of us who live in earthquake county are interested in the science of it all and its nice to be able to learn about it when there is no damage that we know of at this point. In menlo park, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Our breaking News Coverage continues online. We been posting updates all night long. Head over to nbcbayarea. Were going to start out with fog in parts of the north bay this morning. Once that clears out we will have a great day and tomorrow the rain will be back as we get a look outside right now, san jose starts out with some clear visibility and here is what to expect, 46 degrees thats a chilly morning and we will be up to 59 later today. Mostly clear and cool start and then by the afternoon we will have some sunshine once again, a pleasant day. Tomorrow we will start to see that rain moving into the north bay first during the early afternoon, south bay during the later hours of the day tomorrow. So as you get ready to get the kids out the door its definitely a nice warm jacket day. It will be 44 degrees walking to school or going through that drop off line and then as you pick them up later today its going to be much more comfortable in the upper 50s by 1 00. Here is a look at all of our High Temperatures today, in the upper 50s in san jose, for the north bay mid 50s, santa rosa 55 degrees, 54 degrees in San Francisco. As you check out that sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen you will see that rain moving back in by tomorrow, highs only in the low 50s. This is what it looks like as the radar could show heavy rain by 3 00 tomorrow afternoon, moving into San Francisco and oakland by early afternoon there, later into the evening commute for parts of the east bay and the south bay. Back behind that we will still have rounds of some scattered showers moving through throughout the day on thursday as well. Before all is said and done we are looking at the potential of getting a half of an inch to over an inch of rain why some of the heavier showers set up. While we get heavy rain the sierra will get heavy snow. The potential of close to two feet of snow for much of the elevations above 6,000 feet. Looking good to get additional snow before it clears out for the weekend. We are going to get some sunshine here, San Francisco reaches into the low to mid 50s by the weekend. Inland areas will be gradually warming up and by sunday we will be up to 64 degrees and then we will be tracking more rain early next week. Now, mike, youre tracking a crash thats happening in oakland. Thats right. North of the coliseum. Folks, look at this, we have our camera at the coliseum. Northbound slowing right before our eyes the brake lights just shy of the high street off ramp north past the crash on the opposite side of the freeway. Crash blocking the two lanes close to the center divide. Its north of the coliseum and thats the slowing we showed you with the camera. Southbound even worse but holding just about 23rd and the overcrossing there. Traffic jams up past that scene, still waiting for one tow truck which says it can handle both vehicles it has to clear from the left two lanes. Two lanes open southbound 880, eastbound 580 is a clearer route, but those arent great options for a lot of people. You can stick it out but allow another 10, possibly 15 minutes to get through your drive because things will get slower as the tow truck arrives over the next few hopefully. A build for concord and walnut creek and the fog creeping in through vallejo into richmond for interstate 80. No im maar problems for those areas. The drive for west 37 slow, but slow through mere island gentleman en way. South of there looks great. We do have this crash on the shoulder south 880 at alvarado boulevard. Things have smoothed out coming down through union city and the dumbarton bridge. Crash 101 at 280 out of lanes. Coming up next on today in the bay, growing concerns about the deadly flu epidemic.
