Well have all the olympic action from here in pyeongchang in a few minutes. Lets get to the top story on this saturday morning. That is the bombshell announcement friday that special Counsel Robert Mueller has indicted 13 russians for interfering with the 2016 election. Shortly after the inindictment was made public, President Trump insisted that it clearly showed his campaign did not collude with the russians. Nbcs White House Correspondent Kelly Odonnell is near the president s florida who home. Kelly o, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, craig. The president pivoted away from calling the investigation a witch hunt or repeating that Vladimir Putin denied to him that he was involved in the interference. Instead he went on twitter to say that evidence shows that russians began this interference in 2014 before he was a candidate, to rye to claim the Trump Campaign was not involved. The president ignored questions about a sweeping new indictment in the russia probe hours after he had been personally briefed by the Deputy Attorney general. The defendants allegedly conducted what they called Information Warfare against the United States. Reporter for more than a year the president repeatedly discredited the russia investigation. Not a story where they talked about collusion. There was none. It was a hoax. Reporter and mocked any suggestion that russia tried to help him. Have you seen any russians in West Virginia or ohio or pennsylvania . Reporter the government now says russians did come to the u. S. Under false pretenses in 2014. To begin collecting information for their 2016 interference. 13 russian nationals and three Russian Companies were indicted to promote discord and interrupt the american electoral system overall. Russians also recruited and paid real americans to engage in political activities, promote political campaigns and stage political rallies. Reporter the government says russian operatives posed as american activists with stolen or Fake Identities and used a u. S. Based Computer Network to conceal their real location. Part of their mission was to spread derogatory information about Hillary Clinton. The indictment also says they made contact with unwitting members, volunteers and supporters of the Trump Campaign. And emphasized unwitting. Theres no allegation in this indictment that any american had knowledge. Reporter the white house seized on that to make a much broader claim using trump favored all caps to say the investigation found no collusion between the Trump Campaign and russia, even though that assertion goes beyond the scope of this indictment. And in a separate development involving the former chairman of the Trump Campaign, paul manafort, who has been indicted, prosecutors told the court theyve identified additional banking crimes that relate to his past business practices, although theres no indication yet that theyve added any new charges to the indictment. Manafort says he was innocent of the charges. Craig, natalie . Kelly o donnell there for us in palm beach. Thank you. Nbc news justice and security analyst, matt, good morning to you. Good morning. This seems to be another time well use the word unprecedented, which comes around a lot it seems. But truly is a striking in history when you read through this 37page indictment. Its stunning, the efforts that the russians, that the 13 individuals named and the three companies underwent to undermine a democracy. Walk us through the significance of this indictment. This really was an historic moment for the Justice Department for the United States, in revealing a more sweeping plot to violate u. S. Election law and interfere in our election than anyone knew. We all knew about their activities on social media, but this indictment reveal ace plot that began earlier than we knew, was better financed than we knew at some point, over a Million Dollars a month in budget and extended not just online but to russian intelligence operatives coming to the United States to gather intelligence, recruiting people to attend rallies on the ground and even paying people to attend Hillary Clinton and protest. This was a sweeping conspiracy to violate u. S. Election laws and i think its clear this is just the beginning of muellers investigation and there will likely be further indictments to come. Matt, President Trump did not respond to some shouted questions yesterday at the white house, but he did take to twitter. And this is what the president tweeted yesterday afternoon. He said, in part, russia started their antiu. S. Campaign in 2014, long before i announced that i would run for president. The results of the election were not impacted. The Trump Campaign did nothing wrong. No collusion. And, again, matt, President Trump for a long time insisted that the whole thing was a sham, was a ruse. Now it appears as if he is acknowledging that russia did, in fact, interfere with our election. What do you make of the tweet and of the president s apparent change of heart . The president continues to behave more like a defendant than a president with regard to this whole investigation. What you would expect a president to do is react not just about himself and about his campaign but what this means for the country and what the government he leads is going to do to respond. We havent seen that from the president. He has now finally at least dropped the idea that this is a hoax but were still not seeing leadership from him to tell the American People what were going to do to prevent this from happening in the future. We just saw this week the intelligence community, intelligence chiefs testify to congress that they believe the russian interference is not over, it will come again in the 2018 mid terms and likely in the 2020 president ial election as well. Matthew miller, so clearly a lot to be did he say sseminated. A lot to be looked at. The president is spending the weekend at his estate in flchlt before he arrived he stopped in parkland. The president met with victims and thanked First Responders as well. This, as outrage grows over an fbi tip about the shooter that the agency now admits it mishandled. Nbcs myr a. Rod rig ez is in florida where the memorial to the 17 victims continues to grow. Maya, good morning. Reporter good morning, craig. In addition to the tip that the fbi received the Sheriffs Office is revealing over the years they received more than 20 calls regarding the suspect shooter. All of this as this weekend more funerals are set for the victims. As family and friends say their final goodbyes to victims of Wednesdays School shooting a knife was stabbed in my heart. Reporter this morning the fbi under fire for its mishandling of a detailed tip in january, warning niklas cruz had a desire to kill. The caller provided information about nikolas cruz and the potential of him becoming a school shooter. The agency admits it did not follow up on the tip. Governor rick scott calling for the fbi directors resignation. That they failed us on this monumentous level is so heartbreaking. Reporter meanwhile the president spending the weekend in nearby maralago stopped by the hospital and the Sheriffs Office praising their response. Very sad Something Like that could happen. But the job the doctors did, the nurses, the hospital, First Responders, law enforcement, really incredible. Reporter but anger is building over how there could be another mass shooting at a school. We want to send a message to these politicians that they cannot allow this to continue. Reporter for debbie hickson, whose husband, chris, died in the shooting he wasnt just a hero on wednesday. He was a hero every day. Reporter the issue is much bigger. It isnt just because the fbi dropped the ball on that particular kid. Its happening all over the place. So, that is a huge problem. Reporter a problem nicole hawkley says shes trying to address through a sandy hook promise. She lost her son, dylan, in that shooting. This can be an incredibly isolating time even with all the support of the world around you and the compassion of the community, you can can still feel lost and theyre not. Reporter the angels you see behind me were originally set up in another nearby town to honor the victims of sandy hook. After what happened on wednes y wednesday, they were moved here to parkland. Craig and natalie . Wow it would be nice not to ever have to see those angels again. I know. Maya. Rod rig ez for us in florida. Thank you. Reporter right behind chent, vincent joe, good enough for sixth place.
