In the bay area at least 31 teens committed suicide in 2013, and since 2007 the national suicideerate is up 31 for teenage boys and double for girls. I wanted to go to sleep and not wake up. Reporter gianna came close. The day wasnt exactly any different than any other day. Reporter her family asked us not to use her last name, but the sophomore wanted to tell her story. We dont go to the traditional i guess american high school, where its the jocks bully the nerds. Reporter she says she hit a low point during the summer after freshman year. My parents dont talk about their mental issues, and theyre stressed as well with their jobs. To them its like get thickskinned, do better, get back up. To me i was so low i didnt know if i could get back up. You were 14 . Yes, that was a decision i made at the time. Now a year after her attempted suicide gianna says shes found new purpose, to prevent other teens from making a decision they cant undo. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for kids age 10 to 19. Education is such a big thing in the bay area yet people arent educated about Mental Health<\/a>. Part of the information thats missing is data on 51 campuses. Campus police or Mental Health<\/a> clinicians can place that student on a 72hour involuntary hold in a Mental Health<\/a> facility. Are todays teens at risk for taking their lives . Absolutely. David is a crisis counselor. They had 142 students placed on a hold last year. You think all schools should be tracking this information . Absolutely. Reporter but they arent. We learned only eight of them know how many times their students have been placed on a psychiatric hold. Across those districts it happened 455 times just last year. Los angeles, San Francisco<\/a>, and san jose are among the many districts that dont track this information. Some people say talking about suicide encourages it. Do you agree . Absolutely not. Yeah, thats one of the greatest myths around suicide. What we know is if somebody is talking or thinking or having feelings of suicide and we end up asking them that question, it typically gives them a sense of relief and gives them permission to talk about it. Reporter Palo Alto School<\/a> district has struggled since 2009. At least nine students took their lives and the citys suicide rate is nearly two times the state average. But we found the district does not track how many students have been placed on 51, 50 hold. At first they said someone would explain it to us and then they stopped returning our calls and emails. We had not previously tracked in a specific way. Reporter trudy gross is the superintendant. School leaders said they decided to start this call. What do you hope to learn by tracking this data . We hope to have some information about the frequency. Reporter you dont think districts should avoid talking about this issue . I dont think so. I think its part of one of things we need to look at in terms of supporting our students. I want schools to start investing in students happiness. Youre not alone. Youre not the only one feeling these things. Reporter how would you describe where you are today . I guess you could say growing. I feel like im in a lot better place. But the city later decided to allow companies to test them. On thursday the board of supervisors and budget and finance committee will vote to set the permit fees for testing. Robot companies will then be allowed to test three robots at once. The board will vote to adopt the fees in march and then thats when applications will be available. Look at this blast of winter. Created some problems on the road, though. This is i80 in the morning. A semi got trapped on the road after hitting a car. Really on thursday its going to be a tough drive up there. If you could leave lets say tomorrow morning and you have the luxury of doing so, thats probably going to be the best time for you with all this active weather moving in. Or you never know if you have a private plane you can head off tomorrow as well. Lets go ahead and look at the top weather headline. And of course it is the storm system that is starting to take shape in the pacific. This is going to drop down from the north. As we head around thursday not only the rainfall but a cold blast of air that could even bring up some low snow. Theres nothing in terms of rainfall showing up at the current moment. As we head through tomorrow morning i do think well begin to see some changes in the south bay. 41 degrees, down to chilly 37 in the trivalley. I think we could have a chance here of a bit of drizzle and start off cold in the north bay at 38. So overall i think were good here for the morning even into the early afternoon hours. Nothing in terms of heavy rainfall for us. The biggest change is going to be the clouds moving on through. Thatll put us at 58 here in downtown san jose. Not too windy either. 57 in walnut creek, 59 in fremont, 56 in redwood city and a cooler 52 in half moon bay. The coolest among the embarcadero at 51 degrees and 58 for napa. The system is going to begin to get close once we hit tomorrow night. I think around 6 00, 6 30 well see some showers start to push through the half bay. By 5 30 in the morning on thursday thats when things will really start to peck up for us. I think on the thursday morning commute thats when we are expecting this heavier rainfall to push through the bay area. But its going to be a twoday event with this storm system not only on thursday but as we head into friday. Overall rain total showing 1 inch for most of the bay area. Even down here in san jose and also near an inch for the east bay. Close to that for San Francisco<\/a> and oakland. And right here in the north bay we could get close to 1. 5 inches from napa into calestoga. On the extended forecast again, thursday is the day with the heaviest rainfall. Winds about 15 to 20 Miles Per Hour<\/a> and hang onto some scattered winds there with low snow. We dry out sunday, monday, and tuesday. Well have the forecast with daytime highs expected in the 50s.
