Liquid smoke. The smell overwhelmed the whole house quickly and i overwhelmed it thinking my neighbors house might be on fire. Smoke billowing everywhere. The latest fires took place in and around the Roosevelt Park and nagele park neighborhoods. As you see all close together and five ignited within half an hour of each other. Its adding to homeowners anxiety and crime mapping. Com shows before this weekend there were already 36 fires around here in the past six months, and as we showed last week a Home Security camera caught a man actually setting fire to a pile of wood and brush at a home. Could it be arson . Could it be homeless encampments or sparked by fireworks . Could it be random . And the fear is the danger of the dryness, the lateness in the season and the winds. Its very scary. You dont know who is setting these and what the motive is and were all these thunderstorms are all in close proximity of each other and thats very worrying that a structure is going to be next and heaven forbid a person. Now the Fire Department told us it is looking into these incidents, but so far no update. Live in san jose, robert honda, nbc bay area news. Thanks, robert. Late this afternoon the judge announcing she wi announcing she replaced three jurors. The jury has to start deliberations all over again. Lets begin with melissa colorado in the courthouse when the announcement was made. Melissa . Reporter well, its unlikely that were going to hear an announcement of the verdict coming down any time soon and heres why. The three new members, the three new individuals, they have to play catchup. They have to go over three months worth of testimony and more than 100 exhibits. They have to refresh their memories. Its a lot of information and this morning we watched as former family members were watched one by one into the courtroom. They reached out to victim family members and told them to come to the courthouse for an announcement. Judge thompson did not explicitly say why the three women were dismissed but she stressed the new jury members do not talk to the media, do not search for any information related to this case. Now here is the makeup of the new jury. Seven women and five men will decide whether or not Master Tenant and his associate should be found guilty of 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter. Theres only one alternate left. Now you might be wondering which side has more to lose from this new jury profile. Nbc bay areas legal analyst steven clark thinks prosecutors should worried. For the d. A. s office they are likely very concerned losing this many jurors all at once because once you run out of alternates, the deliberation process will be over, and there will be a mistrial, so i think the d. A. s office is much more concerned about this development than the defense potentially. Okay. Melissa live at the courthouse, did you get a look at some of the original jury members, nine original members. How are they feeling about starting all over again. I couldnt help but notice there was one woman and one man and they had identical reactions. They had their hands over their face. I mean, thats a universal sign for disappointment because youve got to imagine fatigue has got to be setting in. These 12 people have been in this courthouse since april. Were now in august, and the next couple of days youve got to imagine its all about getting these three new jury members caught up and youve got to imagine these three individuals might have questions of their open are might also be requesting read back of testimony so the waiting game continues. Thanks so much, melissa. Now here is a reminder of the Key Developments in the ghost ship fire that broke out in december of 2016 killing 36 people inside. Two were arrested for involuntary manslaughter. Seven months later the trial began and deliberationed started at the end of last month. Todays shakeup impacts the family members and friends of the victims and the defendants. The jury has to restart its deliberations which could extend the trial for weeks or months. Nbc bay areas Jodi Hernandez is with us with that part of the story. Reporter this has been a very stressful day for people close to the case. Family members were told there was an issue with the jurors so they raced here to the courthouse this afternoon fearing the worst. A lot of anxiety. The a lot of not knowing. No one knows. Reporter thats how friends and familiar lift ghost ship fire victims and the suspects are feeling after jury deliberations hit a snag. The judge removed three jurors today, replacing them with alternates. I hope that the new jury does a good job. This has been a tough waiting period. We didnt expect that deliberations would, you know, restart, but i think, you know, i still like me and my people still have really high hopes that this is going to get resolved. Reporter Danielle Silva hasnt missed a single day of the trial. She befriended max harris after his arrest. I still have confidence that the jury is going to do the right thing and get a not guilty verdict for both max and derek. Reporter for everyone involved, a new jury will require more patience. Lisa lost her best friend, 35yearold Jennifer Mendiola in the fire. She wants justice. Derek guilty, max im not so concerned with but definitely derek, 39 years, definitely. Reporter family members and friends didnt want to say a lot today because of the gag order. Many of them who have been quite talkative throughout this process declined to say anything with just one alternate left. They dont want to say anything thats going to jeopardize this case. Reporting live in oakland, im Jodi Hernandez, nbc bay area news. Jodi, thank you. As weve seen today things can change on a minutes notice. Now were sending out updates on this trial through our app. We sent out this alert right after we learned three jurors had been replaced.
