An American Airlines employee arrested and charged with sabotaging a plane that was about to take off with 150 people on board. Tom costello covers aviation for us tom, what more do we know about this reporter good morning. This happened back in july the mechanic is expected today in a federal court in miami. The fbi launched an investigation, with the help of federal air marshals, that not only leads to serious charges but highlights a very real threat to aviation security. Abdulmajeed marouf ahmed alani is a 31 year veteran of American Airlines with no reported history of trouble on thursday, the Airline Mechanic was charged with damaging, destroying, or disabling an aircraft by tampering with the air data module, or adm, which reports Critical Data to pilots. A boeing 737 like this one was scheduled to fly from miami to the bahamas on july 17th when the pilots noticed a problem on the ground, aborted the flight, and returned to the gate 150 passengers boarded another plane and completed their trip overnight, American Airlines released a statement in part, we are taking this matter very seriously. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was taken out of service, maintenance was performed, and after an inspection to ensure it was safe, the aircraft was returned to Service American notified federal law enforcement. According to Court Documents, the man said his intention was not to cause harm to the aircraft or its passengers instead, he said he was upset over a long simmering dispute between the airline and the mechanics union, and this affected him financially he tampered with the plane to have the flight cancelled to get overtime work. No matter the motive or intent, employees always pose a potential security concern the greatest vulnerability is always the insider threat. The challenge with the insider is they know the system. Reporter no indication which was terrorism related. No indication. It appears to stem out of this frustration over a fiveyear labor dispute. Nbc reached out to alanis family and got no response this idea of an insider attack, how much of a concern is that for federal authorities in 2017, the House Homeland Security committee issued a report warning about the dangers of inside jobs or inside threats involving an airline or airport employee every time i talk to the tsa, and even the airlines, they will tell you, Insider Threats remain a very top security concern.
