About three weeks to resolve that government funding issue. Laundry list, a long laundry list of legislative items for lawmakers returning to capitol hill and not much time to get it all done. Lawmakers returning to capitol hill today still undecided on how to address gun safety legislation. Republicans say theyre waiting on President Trump. Were not going to vote on bills on the senate floor that the president s not willing to sign. The president needs to step up here and set some guidelines for what he would do. Reporter the president had voiced support for strengthening background checks. Theres a great appetite and i mean a very strong appetite for background checks. Reporter then backed off after talks with the nra. A series of Mass Shootings last month left 22 dead in el paso, texas, nine in dayton, ohio, and seven killed in odessa, texas. The odessa shooter failed a background check. Our bill would make sure that state Law Enforcement is promptly notified when someone fails a background check. Reporter democratic senator chris coons is talking with republican counterparts and the white house about now background check legislation. A letter from the Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer places background check legislation already passed by the house atop the to do list as well as securing 2020 elections from russian interference. Meantime, lawmakers have about three weeks to fund the government. Current legislation runs out september 30th. And hanging over all of this is a possible push by many House Democrats to begin an impeachment inquiry of President Trump. The House Judiciary Committee is expected to vote this week on defining the impeachment investigation. Federal authorities in Southern California are widening their investigation into last weeks deadly boat fire. Over the weekend, they executed search warrants at the offices of truth aquatics, the company that owns the conception diving boat. Its believed theyre looking for training, safety and maintenance records. The bodies of all but one of 34 victims have now been recovered, but the search is currently suspended due to rough water. Salvage crews plan to pull up the sunken boat later this week. A new surprise turn for the Richmond Police department. Hours after a vote of no confidence in chief alwin brown, the east bay times reports he is no longer serving his role. Brown is officially listed as out of office, but its not clear if that means that he resigned or if hes on administrative leave. Assistant chief french is taking over for the time being. Last week, the Union Announced more than 80 of the rank and file voted no confidence in brown. The suspect in a recent Sexual Assault is facing new charges, tied to another attack. Authorities credit the alleged victim with helping crack the case. 22yearold matthew han of Half Moon Bay is facing charges tied to two attacks. Investigators say in july he sexually assaulted a 15yearold girl while she walked her dog on a coastside trail. But the victim fought off her attacker, then Authorities Say the teen recognized hans photo in the newspaper after he was arrested in a similar assault case last month. It is 5 05 and developing this morning, maybe you missed this stunning video over the weekend, an overturned cargo ship off the coast of georgia, very big. Four crew members remain unaccounted for. It happened in the Early Morning hours yesterday when the crew was actually performing a turn on the st. Simons sound about 55 miles north of jacksonville but the ship started leaning toward its portside. 20 of the 24 crew members were eventually safely rescued. For thousands of dorian survivors left with nothing, this is from the island abaco. The goal right now is simply to find shelter. A mass exodus is under way. Refugees are trying to get to nassau, the largest city in the bahamas. So far about 3,000 people have made it off the island, but its believed that many people there never made it through the storm. Im very grateful, thanks to god for allowing us it to see another day. A lot of people died and i thought i was going to be one of them, and i just, we just started praying and everything and we survived. Right now there are 44 confirmed deaths in the bahamas but that number is still expected to rise dramatically, with many still unaccounted for. And remember the iconic image when dorian swept through the South Carolina coast last week . A couple that owns this red jeep wanted to get a closer look at dori dorian, they got stuck on the beach so they had to abandon their car. The images played out live for hours across cable news. The owners now asking for money, not for a new car but rather donations for hurricane victims in the babahamas, they already raised a couple thousand dollars. I guess trying to use the attention brought upon them in a positive way. Its going to be a tough time for them, a lot of people, kari, and things arent over yet. Its all the way out there, very far to the north. So far couldnt even find a satellite image to still track this storm as it moves closer to greenland. This is not going to be an issue for anyone else, as it continues to weaken, and so as we bring it back home a live look outside right now in walnut creek, heading out the door, we have some mostly clear skies, and a nice cool start to the day. As we go into the rest of the day, heading out for a jog this morning, we are going to see around san carlos, parts of the peninsula, a comfortable start to the day with some low 60s and it does start to feel a little bit warmer, but not too bad. Were at 70 degrees at noon today. Our high temperatures are going to be still a little bit below normal, after that very strong cold front rolled through here on saturday. Antioch is reaching about 80 degrees. Well also see a high of 80 in morgan hill. 78 in palo alto, with oakland today reaching 73 degrees. Clearlake up to 78, so our temperatures very much like they were yesterday. You can see at the bottom of the screen, we do have some big changes ahead, as the week goes along. And here is whats happening, so we have that system that rolled through, with the breezy winds and also the much cooler temperatures, and it will still be mild and breezy tomorrow, going through wednesday, the warmup begins as High Pressure starts to nudge in from the Desert Southwest. We will see with that wind flow more of a southerly wind and then kind of an offshore wind, as get into the end of the week, and thats going to cause those temperatures to heat up in the valleys. So this is what were looking at, some upper 70s today, and tomorrow. A few clouds moving by, low 80s on wednesday, but look at how those temperatures spike on thursday and friday. Just as you wake up and wipe your eyes again, thats 98 degrees this friday, and it is going to be a hot weekend. Ill have more updates on that.
