Not as bad as yesterday in areas like San Francisco and the coastline. We will get relief today. So you will have a place to get away from the heat. Yesterday, you didnt have much of an option. Look how beautiful the shot is. You can see the sun, the orange in the back, but because it is another hot day, we will have a microclimate weather alert. Throughout the entire bay area, 57 in San Francisco, 58 in fremont and the temperature changes pretty noticeable in some spots including areas like San Francisco, and about five degrees cooler, including santa rosa, about three degrees cooler and you will notice the fog starting to roll. In and we will get some clearing along the coast in terms of the fog but another reason why we have extended periods of microclimate weather, one more day, is because the spare the air alert remains in place. And it was supposed to expire yesterday but they extended it today and we are expecting poor air quality, the inland, the east bay, the south bay and notice the bay and the coast, a lot better and there is the possibility of seeing some smoke coming in because of the fire. So we will monitor that closely and let you know how long the heat will be sticking around. The big difference, along the coast, not 103 in santa cruz today. It was yesterday. A new record. I will go over that in a second. Thanks. We begin with the crime scene at the State Capitol, tensions over a new vaccine law boiling over. Protesters attacked state senators by theying some kind of liquid on them. Two bay area senators were inside the chambers when this happened. This this picture, shot from the senate floor, you can see red dots, soaked into some of the books and documents on the desks. And another photo, a thc officer is seen taking pictures of evidence. And the senator hit by the liquid. We were deliberating over a bill and sitting at my desk when a woman screamed behind me up in the gallery and a rain of liquid came down on top of me and my clothes and my desk. Among the first lawmakers to take to social media was San Francisco senator scott wiener, he says the woman has been antivaccination protester. When you have people who are trying to harass and intimidate and even assault elected officials, thats just not an attack on us as elected officials, thats an attack on democracy. Investigators are testing the red liquid to confirm what it is. For the last several weeks, dozens of antivaccination demonstrators have been converging on the state capital to protest a new law that will make it harder for doctors to exempt children from required vaccinations to go to school, and the Republican Leaders joined colleagues to condemn the violent and unacceptable behavior that took place at the State Capitol this evening. Regardless of differences of opinion, there is no place for this in our america. No one was injured but senators had to delay the final night of the session because of the drama in the senate chamber. They reconvened in a smaller room to finish the work for the night. A crime was committed today. But the senate will not be deterred from conducting the peoples business. Nbc bay area news. We will continue to follow this story, throughout the week, and for more information, on the incident, and the new law that sparked this protest, go to nbc bay area. Com. The suv that was targeted not because of what criminals could see, but what they couldnt. The fremont Police Officers are noticing that thieves are now targeting suvs with tinted window, cargo covers, and privacy screens, breaking into suvs, even though valuables arent out in the open. The suspects were merely just taking advantage of the opportunity, and looking to see if by chance the victim had, you know, valuables underneath the privacy screen being concealed. The third area proud blood drive is starting today, starting in less than two hours in fact. Weve been producing the bay area proud series for almost eight years with hundreds of people doing good for their community and their eight ones who inspired me to act which is why i organized this blood drive. But it is the folks like Karen Hendrick at the Stanford Blood Center who do all of the hard work so it is an easy experience for those of us who go to donate. Karen, thanks for joining us this morning. Youre welcome. The first question for you this morning, just has to do with, for people who do come out and donate blood today, where does this blood go . Who does it benefit . Gosh, it could be someones child, a parent, mother or father, an aunt or uncle, on average, our partner hospitals are transfusing 800 to 900 units per week. So the blood that is donated today will help the patients tomorrow, no doubt. Thats fantastic. Tell us about the situation right now with how the blood supply is doing and what are the critical needs this time of the year . Surprisingly, our two most common blood type, o positive and a positive, have an immediate need here at Stanford Blood Center. We have had eye usage all summer long, coming into labor day, and out of it, and usage continues to be high, so while all blood types are needed today, we do have an immediate need again for o positive and a positive. Karen, as you know, this is the third year weve been helping organize the bay area proud blood drive and weve had hundreds of people show up. One of the things im most proud about is weve had 50 first time donors come out to this event. People who have never donated before have come out and done this for the first time. We both know that it can be hard to get people to go the first time. Theres the fear of needles and the fear of the unknown. So what is your message to people who might be watching right now, right sitting at home, saying i know it is a good thing to do, and i would like to do it but im still nervous. Well, its not certainly a pleasant experience, i dont want to say that, but for the relatively small amount of time that it takes, you get to meet some great staff here at Stanford Blood Center, and the donation experience itself is pretty pain. Our staff are great. We have cookies and juice for you afterwards. And the feeling, though, when youre leaving the donation is hard to describe. You feel like youre a super hero. Youve done something relatively easy to potentially help save another persons life. And when we talk to firsttime donors, especially young donors, thats what we really try to instill, is for the time that it takes, its an amazing feeling, and youre really potentially changing someones life. As i said, what else are we going to do today that will save someones life . Karen, at the Stanford Blood Center, thank you very much. I will be joining you out there in just a little bit of time. Speaking of cookies, my family has been baking cookies. So those cookies are going to be there as well. Now, the bay area proud blood drive, we have been talking about it, is 9 00 a. M. To 2 00 p. M. Today. Saturday. And it is at the princeton plaza in san jose. Thats at 1375 blossom hill road. The blood mobiles are parked on the meridian side. If you get there, look on the meridian side. We welcome walk hng in, walkin. But there is time to make an appointment go. To nbc bay area. Com bay area proud and i have all of the information right there. And i am going to have a lot of water and a lot of cold drinks. My car is packed right now so im ready because it is going to be warm. The blood mobiles are air conditioned of course. Perfect. Because san jose is going to climb into the 90s. I will say this though, garvin, by 2 00, thats hen it is expected to get the hottest and it will be in the cooler time frame. We will be winding up. Get there early. Head out there now before it gets really hot. Not much cooling even along the coast even for those who were trying to escape the heat. However look at this beautiful shot of the golden gate bridge. This is the view from the tower cam, we have the clouds with the fog, the iconic golden gate bridge, and San Francisco, today, will manage to climb into the 70s. So it is a little bit more comfortable for today. The current temperatures today, throughout, 57 in San Francisco, and look how warm it is in fremont, but were already noticing some cooling around the bay area. So much so, that San Francisco is running about five degrees cooler at this hour. Compared to where we were at yesterday. Speaking of yesterday, going to be hot but yesterday, it was really hot and one of the things that weve been talking about, var gin an var, garvin and i, just how hot it was. And one of the guys that is behind the set and you will see him in a little bit if he allows me to tweet him, that. Is and santa cruz, a new record yesterday of 103 degrees. It was so hot, this is why were saying you couldnt escape the heat yesterday. Concord didnt hit a record high but did manage to get to the triple digit mark. And santa rosa had a high of 99. San jose, a high of 99. And over at sfo, inching near the 90s. No records for San Francisco. But 94 is pretty hot. Considering the fact that today were only expected to be in the 70s. Thats a big temperature difference. Thanks to a trough nearby that has a cooling trend under way. However, were still expecting the air quality to be pretty poor today, which is why the spare the air alert, it is today, and north bay, it is moderate, and inland, east bay, south bay, still unhealthy, and the bay improved a lot significantly, todays overall daytime highs, look al san jose, 91 degrees, concord, 97. Livermore, 96. Notice we dont have triple digits on the map today. It is just near the triple digit mark again. And San Francisco, halfmoon yesterday, into the 80s. Half moon bay is one of the cooler spots and now back to normal. What is causing all of this . The High Pressure yesterday. And we could still see drifts of smoke because of the fires burning near chico. As we head into tonight, and into tomorrow, weve got this system, this trough, off to the north, and that is going to linger, and it is even probably going to bring a possibility of seeing some rain. I know it sounds crazy, but we could see some shower chance, mainly to the far north bay though. However, some of the models are showing the possibility of some traces of rain, theyre insignificant rain totals but it is more significant in terms of cooling. From 90s to 70 on monday. Due see, you dont see that when we go from 100 to rain to 70s in a couple of days. Vianey, thanks so much.
