KNTV Today In The Bay July 14, 2024

Its not as windy inland but the coastline is seeing upwards of 20 plus miles per hour. San jose right now though 49 degrees. We dipped down below the 50s, some areas even in the 30s right now. San francisco 53 degrees. Wind speeds about 8 miles per hour. Now the 24hour temperature change is pretty significant, napa is seeing overnight lows in the 30s. We expect cold overnight lows tonight, a very cold start into monday and tuesday, and our afternoon highs are only going to be climbing into the upper 60s. So certainly going to be one of those days where you really bundle up. I was cracking up because it was completely a california day yesterday where people were bundled. It was sunny though, but windy, so it was like confusing. Yes. All right, well look forward to your full forecast in 15 minutes. Vianey, thanks. A local Police Department is opening multiple investigations after a Police Officer shot two people. This happened just after 5 00 p. M. Yesterday in san mateo as police were patrolling the parking lot at hillsdale mall. They spotted this stolen chevy, and attempted to pull it over. The driver sped away throwing credit cards out of the window. The chevy hit another car on east hldale ulevard and eventually pulled into this culdesac where officers got out of their cruiser and approached the driver, who then sped toward the officers, forcing one to shoot at the car. The two people inside the stolen car were hit, taken to the hospital for their injuries. San mateo police will now open three separate investigations, one focusing on the original crime of the stolen car and one to determine whether the officer who fired his weapon acted within department policy. Both of those investigations led by the Police Department. A third investigation will look into the use of force by police led by the San Mateo County District Attorneys office. To a chaotic celebration in the north bay, yesterday a fire ripped through a wedding venue, destroying at least three buildings and forcing people to flee. Today in the bays Marianne Favro has more. Reporter this Birthday Party ended abruptly when flames engulfed a nearby building at the wine tasting complex, with strong winds up to 45 miles an hour pushing the flames, partygoers say the fire quickly doubled in size. This fire started this big in the front of the street right here by the driveway, the fire started, it was a little bon fire and within ten minutes it was a massive blaze and everybodys running to try to get person effects. Reporter patty warned people to get out. I smelled smoke and it was very clear it was close so i ran out and told everybody, run, run, run, run u run. Reporter not only did the people at this Birthday Party run but guests at two weddings at cornerstone wereorced to evacuate. In addition a mandatory Evacuation Order was ordered for about 200 people in homes and businesses within a onemile radius of the intersection of highways 116 and 121 near shellville. More than 100 firefighters responded. The shell vista Fire Protection district chief says the fire is not considered suspicious, and its possible a discarded cigarette may be to blame. A fire started in a ditch, spread to vegetation and destroyed three winery complex outbuildings. Fortunately no one was hurt. Marianne favro, nbc bay area news. We are learning new details about a shooting in richmond friday night after a High School Football game at deanza. We told but this yesterday morning, this is new Surveillance Video showing people scatter. You can see them running there, and a dark sedan that sped away after shots rang out. Police say two teens are in serious condition, and a third is recovering from minor injuries. The shooting happened at groups of High School Students were walking near the high school shortly after the game against pinole valley. Now to decision 2020. Senator Kamala Harris is here in the bay area, as she works to reinvigorate her campaign, opening a new Campaign Office in oakland. Last night in San Francisco, talking to supporters in chinatown, one of the topics she touched on, President Trumps impeachment inquiry. Today in the bays Sergio Quintana has there and has more. Reporter senator Kamala Harris had a warm reception for her visit to the ma nil pla town heritage museum. Many of those in the audience know her well from her prior campaigns for San Francisco District Attorney, California Attorney general, and for u. S. Senate. But her president ial campaign has hit a soft patch among the rest of californias voters. Its something she and her supporters arent worried about right now. I have a very complicated relationship with polls. Almost every poll for every one of my races for District Attorney and attorney general said i couldnt win. If you look back in history, candidates like Kamala Harris are the ones who move further through the polls. Reporter the latest poll from the Uc Berkeley Institute of governmental studies puts her in fourth place among likely california primary voters. Shes dropped five points since the last poll, down to single digits. Shes got problems. Theyre probably repairable because theres so much time left between now and when we get really serious about the nomination. Reporter on the swing through the bay area, shell be revisiting oakland where she kicked off her president ial run, her visit comes as her colleagues in the u. S. House of representatives launched impe h impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. Shes been tough on joe biden during the democratic debates but came to his defense against newly released transcript summaries of conversations showing President Trump trying to convince the president of the ukraine to launch an investigation against biden and his son hunt per as far as im concerned, leave joe biden alone, just leave him alone. Reporter Sergio Quintana, nbc bay area news. Dr. Jill biden continues her Campaign Fundraising tour of the bay area this weekend, in support of her husband, joe bidens 2020 president ial bid. Dr. Biden seen here at a fundraising event friday night in San Francisco. Yesterday she made stops in sonoma and fremont. As the calendar turns to october on tuesday, Pumpkin Patches are popping up across the bay area, sun is a priority and so are safety and security following the mass shooting at the gilroy garlic festival. Yesterday was the opening day at yasugi farms in san martin, just a few miles away from the garlic festival location. This year, there will be extra uniformed Santa Clara County deputies patrolling the grounds. The gm of the pumpkin festival tells us she wants everyone to feel safe. Weve always had a Security Team out here with armed guards but with everything that happened at the gilroy garlic festival we wanted that presence here to give people the sense of security. Yasugi farms is expecting 45,000 visitors each weekend over the next month. More developments in a street fight in San Francisco, a battle over boulders, you could call it, early yesterday morning some of these massive rocks were pushed into the street for a third time. Neighbors there have been spending their own money to install the boulders, this is on clinton park and alleyway between dolores and valencia streets in the mission. The idea was to discourage Homeless People from camping on the sidewalks by creating less room there but some are pushing back. Homeless advocates say it sends a message of hate. Others point out that people with disabilities cant navigate around the boulders. The city says it has no plans to remove the rocks. Police found themselves in an unusual position at a local Pumpkin Patch yesterday. This is in petaluma, where officers say they spotted a man accused of slking his exgirlfriend. He ran into the corn maze, and hid from them. They say it was taking them so long to find him that they nearly called off their search. In the end, pet luna police did find the man and arrested him. We are learning new details about the man accused of setting fires last weekend in the bay area. He was visiting for his high school reunion. Last week, we reported more than a dozen wildfires were burning in milpitas. Police arrested this man, freddy graham, who they say set the fires. Last saturday night graham reportedly attended the 50th reunion of Samuel Ayer High School now closed but used to be in milpitas. He allegedly set 13 fires over the course of two days aft he flew in from missouri. No buildings were burned during those fires. We have much more ahead on today in the bay. Coming up, we go live to washington for a preview of meet the press with chuck todd. Plus his parents say he once was a shy kid, now hes the newly crowned homecoming king. Well bring you a sweet update that was first featured in our bay area proud series. Welcome back. We are joined in the studio with our political analyst larry gerst gerston. Welcome. It is time for our weekly chat with chuck todd, moderator of preston sullivan. Thanks for joining us this morning. Happy to. Happy, thanks so much. Chuck, this past week nancy pelosi announced an official impeachment inquiry. What do you think really has changed and what comes next . I think whats changed is democrats know what theyre focused on here. The general calls for impeachment, mueller related, what about this charge, what about that charge . What changed is there is an act he did as president that is selfcontained, the Mueller Report was always about other people on trumps behalf doing things, not about him per se. This is about him, and i think like the nixon tapes did once you heard them it sortf changed a lot of views when it came to i think reading near transcript, not official but close enough, when you read it, you heard the president s voice. It was phrases that you know, so it was him doing it and i think that is what changed pelosis calculation because frankly its why youve seen even the public shifting into something happened here, something deserves investigating here. Great point. Chuck, assuming the impeachment goes through were talking about a tiny issue in terms of the short period of time between now or when it ends and the election. How does that Work Together or does it . Well, larry, ive been skeptical that is does, but do you realize that 1998 the clinton impeachment actually moved very fast even though is started slow. The starr report took forever. Once they got to the point of the formal impeachment inquiry which began in early october in a fourmonth period, they opened the inquiry, filed the articles of impeachment in november and december. They had the trial in january and the verdict in february. Thats about the pace i think this has to be on for this not to get with too much interfering with the 020 election but larry, at some point, youll hear adam schiff say this today, there is going to be a point where they may suddenly look at the calendar and die they dont have time to do this and sort of not have it impact the president. Sticking with this whole idea of the ukraine event and what its led to, a former Vice President joe biden of course is in the bullies eye for the trump and ukraine defense. Is the attention that biden receives from President Trump likely to help, hurt him or have animpact . Yes. I think its all of the above. And honestly, i think thats what, you know, look you talk to all these democratic president ial campaigns, all not sure how this is going to work but the fear is this, when you talk to the candidates not named warren or biden, the fear is this race freezes in place sort of like a caution flag at a stock car race where youre waiting to see what it looks looks like post impeachment and we engage and in reality, its what does biden look like in january, right, what happens . I think thats the unknown. Were going to find out how much does biden engage in this time period, how much does he not engage, does the lack of focus on warren strengthen her buss she doesnt get at tack we thought was coming had she had a normal fall campaign. There is he a lot of things we dont know but the biggest thing is what will joe bidens political standing look at the start of 2020 . Give me that answer and well know for sure whether hell be the nominee or not. Well wait and see, three more months, thanks, chuck, as always, for your insight. We appreciate it. Join chuck this morning for meet the press, hell have a live interview with house representative adam schiff, also an exclusive interview with representative Steve Scalise and exclusive interview with the foreign minister of iran. Tune in to meet the press at 8 00 right here after this newscast. Stick with us. Larry will be back in about 40 minutes for our weekly political segment, look at President Trumps dealings with the president of ukraine. Youre going to lay out a sort of time line leading up to the impeachment inquiry so we look forward to getting that insight. Thanks, larry. See you soon. Turning oother news a comeback story 24 years in the making, just yesterday santa clara held its first parade of champions, since 1995, more than 2,000 marchers across 100 entries took part, including 11 marching bands. The parade of champions began back in 1945, it became a legacy in santa clara. At one point only the pasadena rose parade was bigger. In 1995 the founder retired, the parade was suspended indefinitely. The community is thrilled that its back. It is an amazing demonstration of music and i really loved the whole design and the whole organization of this is really surprising to me. I love all the participation of the bands and the home tour, and the old squad. Of course, next year im thinking im going to have a booth. The parade of champions has that title because its mission is to showcase the citys champions from sports to civic to Business Leaders to art culture and now tech. A homecoming coronation in the east bay for a deserving young man. Take a look. Yes gus exapolias was crowned homecoming king at north Gate High School in walnut creek friday night. You saw everyone cheering him on. Gus has downs syndrome. His parents said he used to be so shy but this is his senior year at high school and they say hes coming out of his shell. You might recognize gus because our own Garvin Thomas interviewed gus in his bay area proud series in january. We are thrilled for the new king. Lets check in with vianey arana with a look at our sunday forecast. Boy, yesterday was like we are in fall. The wind, it was cooler, i know, and wait for it, because if you are headed up to lake tahoe this weekend we skipped over fall and went to winter. I want to show you this shot, this is currently by the way the most recent live look at what the sierra is looking like. This is fresh powder in squaw valley in lake tahoe. Isnt that amazing . This is a live look right now. This is what the folks woke up to this morning. We were talking about that cold front thats what dipped down our temperatures and what brought those gusty winds especially if you were hanging out anywhere around the coastline. We saw 40 plusmileperhour gusts. 60, 70mileperhour gusts in the hilltops. Today it will be breezy and were waking up a lot chillier. 49 degrees in san jose. Time to bring out the coats. You want to wear one tonight because the temperatures are expected to dip down colder. San francisco 53, wind speeds nice and light, immediate coastline and Half Moon Bay seeing temperatures right now in the 40s for palo alto. San jose 46 but look at napa, 39 degrees, thats about a 12degree difference compared to yesterday morning at this exact hour, so certainly feeling the chill factor out there. Now, lets talk about what weve got going on for sunday. Right now its beautiful and clear. We have our own storm ranger up and scanning. You may have seen yesterday we had some storms off to the north and the east, and it brought some tornado warnings for areas near sacramento, sacramento saw thunderstorm activity. It was certainly hectic, a scary situation for the folks out there. Satellite radar you can see that system trekked out east. We have another trough dropping down and thats going to bring believe it or not rain chances to our area, very, very light chance of showers mainly the far Northern Areas and inland east bay. Your microclimate highs for today are going to be a lot cooler, 67 degrees in oakland, only topping out in the upper 60s for san jose at 69. Look at concord, 70 degrees. 64 degrees for San Francisco, and over the next couple of hours, again we want to talk about those winds, so a lot less wind activity through the afternoon. Were going to continue with the breezy conditions, but lets get right to the chances of rain. The winds are going to pick up later tonight as that trough drops down and then our hour by hour outlook shows shower chances especially through the middle and the evening. Look at that, 7 30, again a lot of this rain might not make it to the ground. Right now our models are showing a couple hundredths of an inch in terms of rainfall totals. This cld carry the chance of seeing spotty showers into early monday morning for your monday morning commu
